  • the ending was deep with the martin luther king speech

  • The dream speech came out of nowhere! I guess it aired near Jan. 16. It's funny because I'm watching it on Jan. 17th :)

  • the end made me teary...

  • Uhm, Martin Luther King Jr. is pretty awesome, but I don't understand why the speech was at the end of this particular episode. It has nothing to do with the rest of the episode !

  • @Destinyiluvdebate just random and to show Denise and Vanessa some humility.

  • why was the title of this episode called Vanessa's Bad Grade, it seemed more focused on the sweater than the D

  • lmao! Martin Luther King. of course!

  • Ug, Martin Luther King shoved in my face at the end. -vomits- No thanks.

  • @DrBardDeMuse the original air date of this episode is January 16,1986. Which was four days before the first observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a U.S. federal holiday.

  • Does anyone understand why the ending was the speech? Did I miss a connection?

  • You can have light skinned and dark skinned children in the same family. It has everything to do with genetics. Remember that Cliff's dad Russel is light skinned. Maybe Denise got it from him. There are four children in my family (same mother and father) and everyone is dark skinned except for my youngest brother because my grandfather's side of the family is light.

  • Denise will choke a bitch. Don't F with her.

  • denise and vanessa remind me of me and my sister but cliff is hilarious!!

  • AMEN to that ending:) but even in the world today we're still strugggling but one day God will free us from this sinful world:))

  • yo, Denise is a G!!

  • Wtf? The older sister is like a white lezbo

  • @POWNADGEsniper69 Shut up!!!!!!!!! She's not white she's mixed FYI!!!! "Smart One."

Get ur facts straight & she's NOT lezbo. She's prettier than U R!!!!!!!

  • LET FREEDOM RING!

  • my tuxedo <----- XD!!

  • why is Denise white?

  • @ToriiiaaaX I wondered that myself. Maybe she's adopted?

  • @NancyHey Well, Lisa Bonet is biracial in real life (African-American father, Jewish mother). As for an in-series explanation as to why she's lighter skinned that her family...I honestly don't have an answer for that one.

  • @Tubewings That's true. The oldest daughter played by Sabrina Lebeauf is also much lighter-skinned than her parents.

  • @NancyHey Although this is just a t.v. show, some children reach past their parents to the traitsof the grand parents. Also I was born very light skinned but got darker as an adult.

  • @vhickerson That makes sense!

  • @ToriiiaaaX Denise is not white...well kinda....she's mixed

  • @ToriiiaaaX her mother was white and her father was black

  • Love The Cosby Show :]

  • poor robert he waited all that time

  • lol at theo's face at the end...they kinda overdid it with the drama at the end but its cool:)

  • how awkward would that have been if her boyfriend had been white. . . whoops! hahaha.

  • I love that Cliff kept finding his clothes amongst his girls' things! It goes against the obvious of borrowing from their mom.

Did not know about the MLK day connection to this episode. Thanks!

  • that look cliff gave at 5:09 cracks me up everytime

  • AND YOU WILL WEAR THE SAME CLOTHES FOR TWO DAYS IN A ROW!

    LMFAO!!!!!!!!

  • I've always wondered why the MLK speech was tacked on to the end of this episode. Good episode, great speech, but there really is no connection whatsoever. Just sayin'.

  • @shooster11 MLK's speech was on there because four days after the episode originally aired, Martin Luther King day was observed for the very first time.

(oh, and for those that don't believe that 1986 was when MLK day was first observed, watch the Final Jeopardy! from the very first Alex Trebek episode)

  • @Tubewings wooow i didnt kno...cool thnx

  • @Tubewings Thanks! Also maybe that hearing King's speech would inspire Vanessa and Robert to study harder and get a better grade on the next test.

  • *Let Freedom Ring* Great Episode. Soon MLK's speech will no longer be just a dream.

  • @DontFlatterUrselfSon Um, I'm confused, Blacks and Whites coexist without a problem nowadays

  • @Revieweverything100 Unfortunately, not all of the time. Racism still exists; I've seen it firsthand even this year when a man turned down a multi-racial person for an item he was selling, and said, "whites only."

  • YAY! This episode aired in my birthday AND it is one of my favorites. The best thing about this show is that there aren't really any punch lines. The situations just happen to be funny :)

  • Claire is beautiful :) she should be my wife...forget cliff huxtable...LOL

  • its touching how rudy , the littlest one of the family was watching such a powerful message. it touched me deeply

  • My favorite part is the end with the Martin Luthor King speech. It's just so...powerful.

  • @TheTeenSleuth wasn't this episode originally aired the same week that MLK Day was first celebrated?

  • @DukeofColumbia MLK Day was actually observed for the first time on January 20, 1989. This episode aired on January 16, 1986. So it was about 3 years prior to the first observing. :-)

  • @TheTeenSleuth No, MLK Day was first observed in 1986. Don't believe me? Watch the Final Jeopardy! of Alex Trebek's first episode.

  • @Tubewings calm down. I believe you. I just typed in the wrong year. I have a book full of historic dates but some of the writing is faded (it was my grandpa's book). BTW, if you sent a message to everyone saying it as in 1986, why did you send a private message to me? That was unnecessary. But thanks for clearing it up.

  • martin luther kings voice is so mighty

  • Last scene is beautifully done. It's not your everyday sitcom that takes the time to have a moment where everybody is listening instead of talking.

  • I love that last with martin luther king jr, that proves we all have a propose on this earth.

  • Beautiful Ending

  • she crazy.. bet i wouldnt say nuthng to my folx.. one punishment is good enuf.. my grade is my mess up.. i'll fix that!

  • hahahahahahaha i couldnt stop laughin wen vanessa and denise knocked cliff over! lol.......and the last part was moving but kinda random, wuz it not?

  • More families should be structured like this and more shows should be made like this.

  • That ending scene just makes this episode. One of the best ever.

  • This is one of my favorite episodes. The ending is especially wonderful.

  • i love the ending

  • If I'm not mistaken, this show was taped during the time when Congress passed the law to make MLK's brithday a national holiday. This was Cosby's way of comemorating the event.

  • I HATE WHEN PARENTS DO STUFF LIKE THIS!!! It's as if the oldest always gets the most leeway. Vanessa got more punishment than Denise. The only thing Denise couldn't do was drive her car for 2 days. Vanessa couldn't talk on the phone for two days and had to pay for Denise's sweater's cleaning with her allowance money, Vanessa didnt get to tell her side first and it's like they're all coming at her. The oldest gets ALOT more privileges I HATE that. =(

  • @TheRealKookie00 Well Vanessa did everything wrong...haha

  • i think its because shes the pretty one

not there with that boy hair but in general

  • i think its because denise is pretty

and she did just take her sisters sweater KNOWING she said she couldnt wear it

  • a cosby sweater!

  • Robert it so cute!

  • Vanessa's bad grade aired 16 January 1986 on Martin Luthor King day. I believe

the first holiday under his name.

  • The end never fails to make me emotional.

  • Robert was sexy!

  • 5:55 WTF is HAPPENING? lol

  • @justinlovespastry they are watching Dr. King's speech. When this episode aired it aired on Dr. King's birthday January 16 1986 this was the very first year they started celebrating his bday. So this Bill's way of acknowledging it

  • Awesome ending!

Martin Luther King's Freedom Speech. Always a good thing.

  • "you will wear the same clothes for two days in a row" lol

  • hahahah Bill Cosby...what a guy x]

  • Please. Under Bush's watch the US got attacked in the worst terrorist attack on US soil. Remember 9-11? Plus, these sorts of threats have been on-going for decades. Nothing new. Remember the Cold War, when the US and USSR almost went to nuclear war a couple times?

  • I love the pencil/eraser and the pen/ink comment! LOL

  • Yeah, but not to the death.

  • That was a random ending, suddenly MLK

  • Great ending

  • claire:"cliff are u allright?"

cliff:".... they took me out...." hahaha lol XD they were scrapping to the death like cliff said good god lol

  • @hopkidokid That was classic

  • @hopkidokid My brother's Worse.

  • "And before you say no,let me remind you that you are wearing the evidence." "Huh?Oh,yeah."

  • "groundation" LOL!

  • love how they just turned without a word and listened. Awesome scene.

  • mother was the same way with my sister, brother, and myself when we were younger.

She could look clear across the room and tilt her head a certain way and everything would cease.

  • @Ramanujan88

was this aired on MLK day???

  • 4:55 If he got grounded, how is it he got to go to the dance?

  • never quite understood why they went with specific ending...and how it is really significant to the episode...but it's definitely a beautiful ending!!

  • I believe it was originally aired on MLK day.

  • Yes, it originally aired around MLK Day 1986, which explains why that footage would've been playing on the TV.

  • @Liyahbeat: Maybe the writer wanted to point out that things Denise and Vanessa were fighting about (clothes) are really unimportant compared to what Blacks were really fighting for at that time.

  • @77ukraine hmmm that would definitely make sense!

    Thanks for the insight!!

    Zoe

  • omg i forgot how funny bill cosby is

  • ...before you say no, let me remind you that you're wearing the evidence. Hysterical!

  • Fighting for civil rights for a people group is a problem; fighting over a sweater and worrying about grades is not a problem

    -response to actuary33

  • It's not really a waste of time. It's just symbolism that they are more problem and why would you fight for sweater and hate each other. When there is/was more thing to worry about or fight about

  • Yes!!!! Such a powerful ending and I enjoyed it so much. My favorite episode and I will watch again and again. Thanks for the upload.

  • vanessa gets in the most trouble out of all of them.. i wonder who she gets it from?.. cliff???.. or claire???..

  • On a scale from 1-10, a 10. She got it from Cliff lol.

  • WOW the ending was so just inspiring and beautiful! I want to watch it again! G-D bless that man 4-ever and always! Love this show!

  • I <3 Denise :)

  • ...i have to show you some thing.

    what my tuxedo?

hahaha! i thought that part was freakin' funny!

  • Cliff's items in Denise Closet. Never realized till rewatching now that the Morgan State shirt looks too small for him ~ even if he claimed he wore it when he was younger.

  • Malcolm Jamal-Warner's look on his face is gripping to the heart.

  • I believe at the time the episode aired it was around the time Martin Luther King's birthday had become a federal holiday. I imagine it was a simple but poignant way of acknowledging that milestone.

  • i didn't realise that...but then again I started kindergarten in 1985

  • hahaha pencil and eraser thats funni

  • hey... is phylicia pregnant? at 4:57 and before she's cradling her tummy like the womb area

  • she pregnant all through season 2......she always had to hide her tummy

  • who was

  • clair

  • I don't get it? Why did they show MLK's speech at the end of this episode? I sure it's because they're all fighting and the speech symbolizes and stands for unity or maybe it's because they are all fighting over silly things when they could be still fighting for their freedom. Yeah, I think that's it. Great episode! =)

  • lol it's in the info

  • ohh haha, i forgot about that. thanks!

  • Did this episode air on Martin Luther King Day?

  • I'm really not going to argue with u. There r so many more important and serious things going on than what u think may have happened with our presidents. I am happy with our president now and I wouldn't take Bush back 4 a second! But that's my opinion. Bad things happen no matter what president we have had in past or present please stop trying 2 argue!! I don't go off on what I think happened or what people gossip about. I go off of fact! Bush really did have a shoe thrown at him!! LOL

  • None of these types of threats were being made when Bush was in power, what a silly statement! No only terrorist wiped out buildings by flying a plane into it but that's not serious or anything!! The terrorist had been making threats about taking down those buildings but they were not taking seriously! Bush knew about that! And I don't recall any other president having shoes thrown at him!! HaHa man was that funny!!!! But other than that Bush was a bang up president!! LOL

  • Clinton knew about the attacks first during his presidency. It's documented fact. Bush may not have been the greatest president, but he took a lot of blame for things that were in play before he even ran. It's very ironic to me that the poeple of this Country are still blaming him without taking the time to do any research.

  • i dont really like bush, but that is true.

  • this show is so hilarious

  • that was in EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS

  • the ending was very emotional. i dont really get the point in why they added it to this episode. does anyone know?

  • because the speech unites.

  • Mr. King was a great man...

    May God rest his soul...

  • And It just came true in 09

  • Was Phylicia pregnant during season 2?

  • wow you must have the uncut versions or something, 'cause I know my Cosby but I don't remember some of those lines

  • It's from the 2nd season DVD series. When TV shows originally air the shows, they run for 22-24 minutes. Then when they put the shows in reruns, they have to cut the shows down to 18 minutes to fit in more commercials, so a lot of bits and lines and scenes get cut out. When DVDs came out they brought back the original 22-24 minute shows which havent been seen since the first time they aired.

  • Ok gotcha. I've been looking for the 25th Anniversary edition with all the seasons in one, and can't find it. Guess I'll have to just order it online

  • It may not still be the case, but I had heard that the first season DVD release had the edited versions from syndication, and not the full episodes. There was enough of a stink made that the following seasons were uncut, but I'm not sure if they reissued season one. Just something to be aware of in case you get season one.

  • "And you will wear the same clothes, for TWO DAYS IN A ROW."

  • free at last thank god all mighty were free at last

  • The look of confusion on Cosby's face at 2:05 is priceless....lol

  • This episode was aired on the Thursday before the very first observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan. 20, 1986. That's why the "I Have A Dream" speech was played.

  • Ahhh, thank you, that explains a lot.

I'll take any excuse to listen to the I Have a Dream speech, but it did seem random.

  • 1:42 lol Cliff: but not to death lol

  • I'm glad Lisa Bonet dumped that hairstyle.

  • For real shes cute but that hair style is just uuuuuh

  • Lol...what are you guys talking about? That is the same style that Rhianna is rocking now...

  • mlk iz the man

  • "i never wear it because its never in my room!"

  • the funniest things are the simplest things!

  • u got that right

  • that was the most random ending...

  • the ending wasn't random...the show aired right before the very first MLK Day in 1986.

Plus it made hte family realize that bigger issues were there to worry about.

  • The end clip is from a famous speech given by Martin Luther King Jr entitled, "I have a dream." The speech was given at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963 in Washington,DC [at the time it was the largest group of protesters in Washington history]. To an audience of 250,000 Dr. King spoke about what it would be like to to live in a country with racial equality and freedom. This speech is the most well known speech of the Civil Rights Movement. This was their Black History month episode.

  • go cosby show.

  • hey...

can someone do me a favor and elaborate on the significance of the ending--I want to get an idea of other's perpectives.

    thank you!

  • hilarious episode. the ending is really moving, though.

  • It somehow makes it worse that Vanessa actually refers to them as "green stretch pants."

  • Let freedom ring!

  • Wow...

I had forgotten the episode ended this way.

    That was deep!!

    Thanks for posting!!!

  • "I have to get it cleaned" lol

  • I think Denise told vanessa "You have to get it cleaned." Why would Vanessa want to clean the sweater instead of Denise?

  • Did you see this episode?

Vanessa wore the sweater. Therefore, Denise rightfully felt Vanessa should dry clean it. Plain and Simple

  • Listen to this:

Claire: Vanessa, what has gotten into you? I have never, ever, seen you behave like this.

Vanessa: Mom, Denise and I have fought over clothes before.

Cliff: Yeah, but not to the death.

Mr. and Mrs. Huxtable are very stern members of the family.

  • uhh mrs. only did u c the night if the wretched?

  • my favorite cosby show episode the ending was a huge help

  • What movie or show is that Martin Luthar King clip from that they are watching??

  • His speech at the march on Washington.

  • Wow. Never have I seen such an ending like this on any show before. Very powerfull

With the main cast is so intent on what they are doing, it drives home the point to the viewers as well.

An ending that makes fighting over borrowing a sweater seem to be nothing.

I also loved when Vannesa whipsered "I'm sorry" during the speech.

  • The only reason Vanessa whispered an apology to Denise was because she wanted her to forgive her for taking her sweater. How come Denise didn't apologize?

  • I think Denise's smile said "I'm sorry" to Vanessa right after Vanessa whispered "I'm sorry".

Sometimes body language is easy to read on characters. But I think Denise's smile forgave Vanessa.

  • Now I understand. From this point on, Denise agrees with Vanessa that she (Vanessa) will never take things that don't belong to her, which belong to Denise. What the hey, Vanessa should be thankful that she has her own clothes. Don't refer to this as EMINENT DOMAIN.

  • :-)

  • If I may say this, Denise really didn't mean to shove Vanessa just because she took her sweater, and Vanessa really didn't mean to take Denise's sweater.

  • What do you mean they didn't mean to do what they did?

  • Poor Denise Huxtable She Got Grounded All Because Vanessa Huxtable Stole Denise Huxtable's Purple Sweater After Denise Specifically Told Vanessa Not To Wear It In The First Place

  • Who knows? Vanessa should have been the one grounded instead of Denese. I remember one time, this girl I knew from the College of Southern Maryland took one of my french fries, the next thing you know, I got a little upset.

  • Of course, Vanessa had a possession over Denise's sweater.

  • "I never wear it because its never in my room.... CLASSIC...Wicked awesome"
