The gulf stream that keeps the UK mild in the winter has stoped! this is big news that I knew would happen, and no one is talking about it. This is going to happen again this winter as snow is predicted next week for many parts of the UK, the cold weather will last into much of december as their is a cold weather system centred over greenland which will move down to britain.

@MrEurocat The facts show us that there although 1998 was the warmest year on record, there has been *no* overall increase in global temperatures. Also the UK Met Office has admitted that temperatures have dropped over the last 14 months. And I never said I could predict the weather, but if you care to look at temperature records, cold winters seem to come in clusters of 3 or 4. All I was saying is that this could well be the case now...

How can it be the worst in 30 years? 1982 -27. 1995 -29! I recall 78/79, 79/80, 82 (in fact most 1980's UK winters were cold and snowy). 87 in particular and then 91 (after a record breaking mild one the year previous!) The last few years are bringing the return of cold winters to the UK but our summers have been terrible since 06 after a long spell of hot summers year upon year to rival that of 76. Lets see what 10/11 brings!
Winters in the UK & Ireland have always been cold, very cold, extremely cold & sometimes mild. @Scari45 You dont need to look to far to see that the earth is warming up, we are technically still coming out of an ice age from the Pleistocene period so we are going to warm up, but since the industrial revolution, as carbon levels have increased the planets average temperature has shot up with it faster than normal, which is shown in ice core samples. Its the warming up faster than normal which could hurt the planet more, melting ice could effect the gulf stream and cool the north.
@Scari45 P.S scientists have know for a long time that poles shift, but only the magnetic poles move a lot, but they don't cause temperature differences, the poles moving has nothing to do with global warming, disproving it or proving it. and the emails leaked do not disprove global warming by a long way, they were just data mistakes which made it look a lot worse, but there is evidence there for GW and weather you like it or not the planet is getting warmer, but why? no one knows ;)
I have a copy of the Birmingham Mail which showed this picture, All over the UK it was chaos I was watching live feed from BBC News 24 and Sky News. Back in 2008 (I think) there was a Sky News reporter by the M5 Junction 4 near Bromsgrove, WORCS when we had the aweful snow, but this is a whole new scale of snow, I think we all know that the snow situation is going to get worse every year.

It is definately time for UK people to think about cold weather in a more long term view. You need to invest in your homes (heating, insulation) and driving (drivers, roads and cars). The mild streams from atlantic are about to end. Here up north even if we dont like it we have to spend this money - or deal with terrible health problems or high insurance cost.

You can't base a use a bad winter as an excuse for climate not existing. Climate change means(especially for the UK because we have a oceanic climate controlled by mild ocean currents and trade winds) that the climate will change and get more extreme eg. Hotter summers but colder winters. Scientists actually know what they are talking about. You say scientists are overpaid, and wrong half of the time. The winter of 1962/63 was horrendous and the winter of 1947 even worse than that! Periodically, Mother nature reminds us of her awesome power just as she does with heatwaves (1976, 1995, 2003 and 2006) and constant rain (Autumn 2000).
The winter hasn't really warmed up much, Feb remains cold, not as severe as January but the 2010 average temp here in the Midlands on Feb 18th is 3.7, the minimum average is -1.1. Great video too
people need to realise records will always be broken and extreme weather events are always going to happen .. eg. in the 70s there was severe drought, 60s there were harsh winters, 50s major floods .. the only reason people are noticing it more is the media's increased input.

What we have experienced is nothing to do with GW. Our normal winter weather pattern is usually dominated by mild westerly winds. However what we have seen is blocking high pressure systems to our N. As the airflow moves clockwise around a high pressure system this brings very cold E,lys. By the way the computer models are very interesting for next week. Im a amateur Meteorologist and im utterly amazed at the latest projections from these computer models. I will reveal more in a few days!!

The reason for our recent cold spell is due to the negative phase of the NAO/AO. A negative AO (Arctic osscillation is where high pressure lies around the North Pole and this encourages High pressure at Northely lattitudes. Our recent winters have been dominated by a positve NAO/AO which is why they have been relatively mild and I hasten to add nothing to do with Global warming.
If I'm not mistaken But The UK experienced The Little Ice Age a few centuries ago were you could walk across the Thames. By The way tis happened in the US and Canada. It was near record lows. By the way I tell people that we are closest to the sun in the month of January ( as of now). They find it puzzling or counterintuitive, especially when you live in the northern hemisphere or at a latitude climate and the weather is bitterly cold most of the time in the months of December through February. LOL I want to say that role that volcanic activity plays in weather.

u guys should stop being alarmed at every little bit of climate change reports just because they're reported in English-speaking countries. It's not just the UK, but many parts of Europe is having the worst winter in years. and the winter in 2008 had been the worst for many other European countries and China in the past 30 years. Global climate is constantly changing. And humans constantly adapt to those changes. Stop fretting and start thinking.
The Guardian had an article a year or two back where there was a prediction of a permanent snow cover on the UK by 2020 or 2030. That's going to make living in the UK impossible as crops can't be grown and livestock can't be grazed on frozen earth. Fuel costs would wipe out the family budget as the heat would have to be run year round and prices for essentials would soar. Roads would have to be plowed constantly, water would freeze. Eventually the UK would have to be abandoned as uninhabitable.
Canada doesn't have a permanent snow cover now but if the UK gets covered, Canada will too. Probably also the Scandinavian countries. There's going to be a lot of refugees if another ice age does happen.
This video is good fun, but people shouldn't get the wrong idea. A permanent freeze of Britain is not going to happen any time soon for the simple reason that we haven't got any big glaciers ready to advance. Summers will be summers with a pretty good Sun and warm winds doing their job and winters will be winters. Relax there's no real imminent danger.

@MrEurocat The facts show us that there although 1998 was the warmest year on record, there has been *no* overall increase in global temperatures. Also the UK Met Office has admitted that temperatures have dropped over the last 14 months. And I never said I could predict the weather, but if you care to look at temperature records, cold winters seem to come in clusters of 3 or 4. All I was saying is that this could well be the case now...

How can it be the worst in 30 years? 1982 -27. 1995 -29! I recall 78/79, 79/80, 82 (in fact most 1980's UK winters were cold and snowy). 87 in particular and then 91 (after a record breaking mild one the year previous!) The last few years are bringing the return of cold winters to the UK but our summers have been terrible since 06 after a long spell of hot summers year upon year to rival that of 76. Lets see what 10/11 brings!

@Scari45 You dont need to look to far to see that the earth is warming up, we are technically still coming out of an ice age from the Pleistocene period so we are going to warm up, but since the industrial revolution, as carbon levels have increased the planets average temperature has shot up with it faster than normal, which is shown in ice core samples. Its the warming up faster than normal which could hurt the planet more, melting ice could effect the gulf stream and cool the north.

@Scari45 P.S scientists have know for a long time that poles shift, but only the magnetic poles move a lot, but they don't cause temperature differences, the poles moving has nothing to do with global warming, disproving it or proving it. and the emails leaked do not disprove global warming by a long way, they were just data mistakes which made it look a lot worse, but there is evidence there for GW and weather you like it or not the planet is getting warmer, but why? no one knows ;)

I have a copy of the Birmingham Mail which showed this picture, All over the UK it was chaos I was watching live feed from BBC News 24 and Sky News. Back in 2008 (I think) there was a Sky News reporter by the M5 Junction 4 near Bromsgrove, WORCS when we had the aweful snow, but this is a whole new scale of snow, I think we all know that the snow situation is going to get worse every year.

It is definately time for UK people to think about cold weather in a more long term view. You need to invest in your homes (heating, insulation) and driving (drivers, roads and cars). The mild streams from atlantic are about to end. Here up north even if we dont like it we have to spend this money - or deal with terrible health problems or high insurance cost.

I do believe that a reversal in the North Atlantic Drift 9And other currents for that matter) could occur in the future (melting of ice introducing fresh water- reducing temp- lack of salt etc...) however, a very uncertain documentation + no evidence to support it. I think that the Jet Stream has been affected by El Niño particularly hard this year, resulting in wierd weather patterns, hence the freakout!

Climate change means(especially for the UK because we have a oceanic climate controlled by mild ocean currents and trade winds) that the climate will change and get more extreme eg. The winter hasn't really warmed up much, Feb remains cold, not as severe as January but the 2010 average temp here in the Midlands on Feb 18th is 3.7, the minimum average is -1.1. Great video too

What we have experienced is nothing to do with GW. Our normal winter weather pattern is usually dominated by mild westerly winds. However what we have seen is blocking high pressure systems to our N. As the airflow moves clockwise around a high pressure system this brings very cold E,lys. By the way the computer models are very interesting for next week. Im a amateur Meteorologist and im utterly amazed at the latest projections from these computer models. I will reveal more in a few days!!

The reason for our recent cold spell is due to the negative phase of the NAO/AO. A negative AO (Arctic osscillation is where high pressure lies around the North Pole and this encourages High pressure at Northely lattitudes. Our recent winters have been dominated by a positve NAO/AO which is why they have been relatively mild and I hasten to add nothing to do with Global warming.

Atmospheric activity & the SUN (remember that) have the greatest influence. The reason we are having a blip in our weather is due to the jet stream position - its normal for it to move between latitudes.

The sun has is a major influence upon the world and has been since always. How much of it's radiative heat warms the surfaces of the land and the water , and how the Earth's axis is tilted relative to its orbital plane, the sun light is incident at different angles at different times of the year.

By the way I tell people that we are closest to the sun in the month of January ( as of now). They find it puzzling or counterintuitive, especially when you live in the northern hemisphere or at a latitude climate and the weather is bitterly cold most of the time in the months of December through February. LOL I want to say that role that volcanic activity plays in weather.

It's not just the UK, but many parts of Europe is having the worst winter in years. and the winter in 2008 had been the worst for many other European countries and China in the past 30 years. The Guardian had an article a year or two back where there was a prediction of a permanent snow cover on the UK by 2020 or 2030. That's going to make living in the UK impossible as crops can't be grown and livestock can't be grazed on frozen earth. Fuel costs would wipe out the family budget as the heat would have to be run year round and prices for essentials would soar. Roads would have to be plowed constantly, water would freeze. Eventually the UK would have to be abandoned as uninhabitable.

A permanent freeze of Britain is not going to happen any time soon for the simple reason that we haven't got any big glaciers ready to advance. Summers will be summers with a pretty good Sun and warm winds doing their job and winters will be winters. Relax there's no real imminent danger.
