what!? this guy is horrible! I will admit some parts are good, but most of it is just noise and jumping around. parts like 2:12 - 2:37 and 3:06 - 3:17 make me want to slap this guy and tell him to take some guitar lessons...
@guitars357 It's so disheartening to hear reactions like this to truly original and talented guitar playing. Yeah it's kind of a sloppy performance and there was obviously tuning issues, but it hardly takes away. Zack has an amazing feel, and as evidenced in the video his licks are emotional and outside the box. Truly mediocre run-of-the-mill "guitarists" get praised all the time on YT, then a true talent is deemed "horrible". It's official - people have forgotten what good guitar playing is.
@FlightoftheSpeedKing I can clearly see that he is overflowing with emotions, but I wasn't questioning his feeling, I was questioning his ability to play the guitar, and clearly he isn't very good
@guitars357 this my dear is one hell of an amazing person with an absolutely amazing talent and tons of soul that actualy feels what he plays and shares it with the world in the most amazing way you might ever see so enjoy
Ok so now here we are 3 years later and I have now taken the time to watch the other contestants videos and there's seriously no doubt about it now Zack should have won there's no reason why he came in second and that's not a biased thought I have watched all the other videos open mindedly
Ive played with Zack several times and he is an amazing player. How he didn't win this contest is beyond me. The winner had a good job as well, but while almost everyone else sounded like an SRV replica (not in a good way), Zack played the blues with immense originality, and a beautiful tone reminiscent of early Jeff Beck stuff. All we seem to get is standard pentatonic licks where kids are just running scales. Zack however was always outside the box and filled with emotion.
Do you guys realize none of you have near a fraction of the skill zach posseses so dont say that you playing at a blues club makes you able to bag on him, come on to make it this far you have to have real skill, watch the finals.
funny you should say that and I applaud youre ability to see the influence. At the time of this contest he was actualy living with Steve so yea he picked up a few of Steve's moved and sillyness but it's a good sillyness that makes you just love them both even more than you already do so it's all good
What is wrong w/ you people. 1st off Zack is a killer player w/ tons of originality and style. Jeff Beck would be proud. Great tone, great chops. This guy is a pure Artist. I know most of you who do not like his performance would like to see some shreedding that we have all seen before. Guys, sometimes it's about the space between the notes But then again, never over estimate the sophistocation of the public. Never aim over there heads, hit em right between the eyes or lower.
First off, this dude is most certainly not a beginner. He is a traditionalist with some originality. Just because he doesn't play a million notes a minute sans feeling doesn't mean squat. He plays with emotion. I think it's refreshing to a blues player come out and not sound like SRV for once. Don't get me wrong, SRV's my absolute favorite, but I hate to see a bunch of clones.
@MegaBrownbaby yea ok well here's my take on your stupidity jack off you take that crack pipe and shove it where the sun don't shine, ok. Because Zack aint into that shit he's all heart it's called loving what you do, moron.
Yeah, I feel kinda bad for people who get really far in competitions like this and aren't really that good. When I go to blues jams this is what the beginners tend to sound like. Oh my! Please stop dancing like that!
I've seen Zack play since he was a kid! He always improves!! And now has some cool "Beck-isms" added to his trick bag!! Don't let up Zack! We from Da 'Burgh have to represent!!

@yjmsrv it's sometimes more about the time you spend playing and the heart that goes into your playing you idiot i mean seriously do you even have the first idea what the fuck you are talking about for real there are pauses between notes you idiot it's done for a reason go take some college courses on music so you can learn before you speak ok i mean it's better to be silent and thought an idiot than to open your mouth and be proven one

ummmmmmmmm gee now who is it that has music featured in movies and has been signed with the Favored Nations label wow is that you ummmm NO I DON"T THINK SO
Britney Spears and all kinds of horrible musicians make it. Not really a good point to make. Let the music speak for itself and here it does a pretty poor job of it.

yo noslacklover, it's in really bad taste to go to ALL of this dude's videos and defend him to everyone who doesn't care for what he does, man. do you work for him or something? makes him harder to like with fanatics like you involved...
I do not work for Zack. Anything I do is of my own doing and not prompted by anyone other than myself and my love for Zack as a person and a very gifted musician.
it was a rhetorical question. just know that to someone who has never seen or heard of this guy before, YOU are a real turn off to getting into him at all.
you're absolutely correct nottobeknown Zack is a fabulous guitarist and an evenly fabulous person he does not play music infact he does nothing half way he puts his heart and soul into every thing he does including every single note of ever single song that he performs and I thank you soooooooo much for seeing that
This guy didn't win did he? So many missed notes and some moments that really just make you wonder if he even listens to what he plays. I'm sure the guy is a decent player but he tried to move outside the box and failed at it many times.
He placed second and followed this competition by opening the Steve Vai Sound Theories tour for Steve at Steve's request. Infact Steve says "I believe there is a brilliance in him that is immeasurable. He's tremendously creative and marches to the beat of his own drummer"
Wow. Funny really. Even Steve Vai is entitled to have bad taste though. He has proven that in the past.
Sadly, while I do understand the "heart and soul" view, his music suffers greatly from his uncontrolled antics on stage. He misses notes and it sounds horrible. I'd focus on playing well first and them jumping around, not the other way around. Too bad I didn't know about this contest...
I still dont' understand why he can't be considered a good player if he "misses notes". You can still see that he's quite a technical player even behind his little "mishaps" on stage...He's confident, he has soul, and he has the ability to play "clean"..that's all that's needed.
Its not just that notes he misses, its his "soul" that I find lacking. His music lacks something to me, some cohesive feel at any point during his performance really. Its bland and goofy and ends up coming off very unprofessional, sloppy and second-rate....regardless of if he has real actual skill and talent. His attitude and antics get in the way and the music doesn't seem to always be the focal point.
I so agree hawkdogie I mean you see so much practiced no feeling playing these days where did anyone get the idea that standing there like you have a stick up your ass playing some crap that you don't even feel is being a musician. Zack is a musician all the way down to the core of his bones I'm glad that you see and appreciate that. God bless you.
Hellow, you tubers, please plug in, steveules and let me know what you think. Its the same song and I need some honest comments. As for this guy, he has talent but I think its a little missdirected and rushed. But being on frount of a croud does funny things to your playing.

when he opened for steve vai he played voodoo child, without a whammy, wah wah, or any effects. he used bends and the tuners on his guitar to get that sound. me and my buddy's jaws hurt after they hit the ground that hard.
dimitrithewise did he go into playing one handed he does that alot in his shows with his band it's amazing if you get a chance come see one of the shows with him and his band you'll love it
If you get to see this guy play the small venues, DO IT. He's from Pittsburgh, and frequents places there. The shows are unbelievable. Bottom line...unreal.
i know folk are gonna be mad, but how did we go from admiring stevie ray, jimi hendrix, b.b. king, t-bne walker etc. to these contestants? they're WACK! yes they can play as in they're well practiced but they're wack bluesmen. On another note i like this guy's spirit. spunky mofo
HAHA, if you think this guy has talent, you have yet to listen to real blues. And by the way, seeing how god-awful so many people on youtube are, makes me feel like I'm pretty good, at least in comparison to people like this guy.
Oh ng I'm so glad that finding some sort of fault in others makes you feel better about yourself however I recommend therapy for those insecurity issues you seem to have a little will go a long way trust me
the kid is bursting full of energy and i love what he does. search youtube for his version of red house. really great job. he's very original and has his own kind of soul. great phrasing and chord tone. love it zack. keep on truckin.... Al from Cal
You know, if Jeff Beck had played this, no one would say a damn word. This kid has talent. When he gets a little older, he'll calm down. But he can play. Good job.
He is a pretty good guitarist, but he looks like he is having a seizure. I agree that you need to have stage presence and feeling, but I believe that he goes a little overboard to the point that it's hilarious to watch.
and you my dear have no opinion that truly matters to anyone other than yourself and apparently you don't even like yourself cause if you did you wouldn't feel the need to critisize others
oh by the way my previous statement about an opinion that only matters to the person giving it was for matsk740 but you know youtube they put the comment where ever just wanted to clear that up so one gets offended
Most "Blues Nazi's" are pretty closed minded. Real, pure, blues would only be played by old black men on out of tune cheap guitars. Which was so great and a progression from field hollers. I think performances like this are a tribute, an expansion, an interpretation, a progression and adaption of that pure blues. Just like it was Eric's, SRV's, Johnny Winter, EVEN Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, all the Kings etc. their interpretation of this early form. Blues is improvisational music.
how can you have too much originality, music is what you make it, nad by god zack puts a whole new spin on the traditional blues, with the funk riffs and plucking techniques etc
well yeh but it is a 'blues' contest. I don't know. I mean i could pluck all the strings open and call em original. This just sounded a bit unpolished. If that makes any sense.
ok so here we go there are alot of people here who seem to enjoy Zack's guitar playing and I would like to let those people in on how to get Zack's latest cd Tranquil Madness just click into my page and I'll give you the info if you ask me for it youtube will not let me post the email address in here
Ok so now everyone who has been sitting around kicking on those who enjoy this can kick on me too I reall dig this as for those who don't well let's all look at the facts here Zack is playing a strat which has been called the impossible guitar to play plus I heard somewhere that he plays with 10 strings which is a pretty damn thick string I can't even imagine making a strat with a 10 string sound that good but if those are 10s he did a great job
Wow. Strats are not impossible to play...I'd like to know who said that. They are stupid. And .10's are not thick. Generally guitars come initially with .09's. Stevie Ray Vaughan played a strat and used .13-.18's. You obviously have some homework to do. Next time, before you make a comment like this, try to know what you're talking about.
The article the other day about Zack in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review has been the most emailed story at that paper's site all day Thurs and a good bit of Wed. Can't recall any entertainment story holding on all day in the most read or sent categories. Usually, only something written about the Steelers or some major political news story holds on all day as Zack's article has.
Very true this is a town where it's hard to get people to notice anything other than the football, baseball or hockey team. Go figure Zack would be the one person who would hold attention of major sports finatics.
he's pretty much put the strat to bed these days and is now playing almost constantly on his Gibson SG it's sounding absolutely breath takingly amazing I love the Strat and always will but he's making that SG cryyyyyyyyy
Was in Memphis when Guitar Zack won the Albert King award in '06 and have seen him about the burgh since he started appearing on stage. Younz critics are so going to eat your words one day...
I agree completely juls and that day is comming alot sooner than these people want to believe. If you caught the New Year's Eve bash at Stonehenge you know exactly what I'm saying.
you enjoy Stevie Ray and John Mayer and find Zack harsh that's funny when he's been said to sound a great deal like both Stevie and John as well as Frank Zappa and Jimmy Hendrix perhaps you need to see some of his other videos
check out "Run A Muck" his live at Harvey's video and his "Star Spangled Voodoo Child" videos in Run A Muck he wrote the music himself it's one of his over 200 origional songs
thank you...and noslacklover: we obviously can not come to an agreement on this, as you see Zack and a great guitarist and I do not. Either way, whoever compared him to SRV or John Mayer is ridiculous. Jimi Hendrix I can see; same with Zappa. Both were good guitars...very innovative. But I think comparing Zack to any legend like that is going a little overboard.
And as for you well you have alot of room to sit there talking shit on someone else when you have one video posted that wont even play yeah that's SRV pride and joy intro alright all I see is a few damn white dots going around in a circle I saw better crap than that when I was trippin back in the day back when you were still in diapers
ok so now your video is working and for the most part it's pretty good a little sloppy here and there but practice can fix that. However, unless you are already at the level of perfection you hope to reach you really should not go around knocking other people who are trying to reach their goals just because you are jealous that they may reach theirs before you reach yours
It's really sad to see this in a nation-wide "King of the Blues" competition. What has happened to the blues if THIS is one of the top 5 unknown blues guitarists in our country? This is just sad.
well bluesman perhaps you should enter as it seems you think you could do better there is a contest every year it's not too early to sign up for the 2008 King of the Blues contest you know
hahaha ok buddy. i am a good guitarist. i however, do not belong in the King of the Blues competition. Both in my opinion, and the opinions of pretty much everyone else who's posted here: he doesn't either.
if you want to look at it from a technical standpoint, his tone is poor, his rhythm frankly just sucks, and would you like to tell me what he is doing from 1:29 to 1:32?
But just so i can understand your opinion: what traits, as a guitarist, does Zack possess that makes him a great guitarist?
Zack's tone quality is superb as it's not a copy of anybody else and it can be copied by very few others his tone is extremely unique and that's what people don't get they are looking for the same old crap they've always heard and they wont find it here Zack is another Stevie Ray whom by the way nobody got in the beginning either
this kid is awwome

firelady178 3 years ago
Look at John Coltrane
Nickovitch2370 3 years ago
I know I can't....but your contorting and dancing shouldn't get in the way of your playing. I personally though its acoustic piece was just awful sounding too.
Itheprosperone 2 years ago
ummmmmmmmm gee now who is it that has music featured in movies and has been signed with the Favored Nations label wow is that you ummmm NO I DON"T THINK SO
noslacklover 2 years ago
Britney Spears and all kinds of horrible musicians make it. Not really a good point to make. Let the music speak for itself and here it does a pretty poor job of it.
Itheprosperone 2 years ago
sucks that his e string kept popping out of tune.. great acoustic jam.

yo noslacklover, it's in really bad taste to go to ALL of this dude's videos and defend him to everyone who doesn't care for what he does, man. do you work for him or something? makes him harder to like with fanatics like you involved...
nhalt34 3 years ago
I do not work for Zack. Anything I do is of my own doing and not prompted by anyone other than myself and my love for Zack as a person and a very gifted musician.
noslacklover 3 years ago
it was a rhetorical question. just know that to someone who has never seen or heard of this guy before, YOU are a real turn off to getting into him at all.
nhalt34 3 years ago
how can you say this guy isn't good?
I feel soul, and I feel tension...nuff said
nottobeknown2000 3 years ago 2
you're absolutely correct nottobeknown Zack is a fabulous guitarist and an evenly fabulous person he does not play music infact he does nothing half way he puts his heart and soul into every thing he does including every single note of ever single song that he performs and I thank you soooooooo much for seeing that
God bless you
noslacklover 3 years ago
This guy didn't win did he? So many missed notes and some moments that really just make you wonder if he even listens to what he plays. I'm sure the guy is a decent player but he tried to move outside the box and failed at it many times.
Itheprosperone 3 years ago
He placed second and followed this competition by opening the Steve Vai Sound Theories tour for Steve at Steve's request. Infact Steve says "I believe there is a brilliance in him that is immeasurable. He's tremendously creative and marches to the beat of his own drummer"
noslacklover 3 years ago
Itheprosperone 3 years ago
I still dont' understand why he can't be considered a good player if he "misses notes". You can still see that he's quite a technical player even behind his little "mishaps" on stage...He's confident, he has soul, and he has the ability to play "clean"..that's all that's needed.
nottobeknown2000 3 years ago
Its not just that notes he misses, its his "soul" that I find lacking. His music lacks something to me, some cohesive feel at any point during his performance really. Its bland and goofy and ends up coming off very unprofessional, sloppy and second-rate....regardless of if he has real actual skill and talent. His attitude and antics get in the way and the music doesn't seem to always be the focal point.
Itheprosperone 3 years ago
I agree. It's so one-sided. Forced.
AntiOwnage 2 years ago
here is another guy who feels everything he plays puts alot of emotion into his playing.
hawkdogie 3 years ago
thank you hawkdogie for knowing true talent when you see it and for understanding what is really going on here God bless you
noslacklover 3 years ago
plus he has a strong stage presence that you dont see alot of now adays
hawkdogie 3 years ago
I so agree hawkdogie I mean you see so much practiced no feeling playing these days where did anyone get the idea that standing there like you have a stick up your ass playing some crap that you don't even feel is being a musician. Zack is a musician all the way down to the core of his bones I'm glad that you see and appreciate that. God bless you.
noslacklover 3 years ago
see, I believe that zakk is a musician too, but it's just that I don't believe that Zack ISN'T a musician either
nottobeknown2000 3 years ago 2

Sjostrom12 3 years ago 2
i know folk are gonna be mad, but how did we go from admiring stevie ray, jimi hendrix, b.b. king, t-bne walker etc. to these contestants? they're WACK! yes they can play as in they're well practiced but they're wack bluesmen. On another note i like this guy's spirit. spunky mofo

I saw him opening for Steve Vai last year, and he already is an amazing player :).
cybertooth49 3 years ago
This guy is so phony. No technique. Sloppy and with convoluted facial expressions. Dancing around on stage doesn't mean you have any musicality.
ng2513 4 years ago
oh and there you are ng2513 yeahhhh all the jealousy and no talent of your own hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm soooooooooooooo sad
do yourself a favor watch some of his other videos with his band type in "Guitar Zack and No Slack"
noslacklover 4 years ago
HAHA, if you think this guy has talent, you have yet to listen to real blues. And by the way, seeing how god-awful so many people on youtube are, makes me feel like I'm pretty good, at least in comparison to people like this guy.
ng2513 4 years ago
Oh ng I'm so glad that finding some sort of fault in others makes you feel better about yourself however I recommend therapy for those insecurity issues you seem to have a little will go a long way trust me

the kid is bursting full of energy and i love what he does. search youtube for his version of red house. really great job. he's very original and has his own kind of soul. great phrasing and chord tone. love it zack. keep on truckin.... Al from Cal
almcg2 4 years ago
You know, if Jeff Beck had played this, no one would say a damn word. This kid has talent. When he gets a little older, he'll calm down. But he can play. Good job.
wtfievh 4 years ago
He is a pretty good guitarist, but he looks like he is having a seizure. I agree that you need to have stage presence and feeling, but I believe that he goes a little overboard to the point that it's hilarious to watch.
MeterMan257 4 years ago
this is a disgrace to the blues. you should open for john mayer. oh yeah....you suck
matsk740 4 years ago
and you my dear have no opinion that truly matters to anyone other than yourself and apparently you don't even like yourself cause if you did you wouldn't feel the need to critisize others
noslacklover 4 years ago
oh by the way my previous statement about an opinion that only matters to the person giving it was for matsk740 but you know youtube they put the comment where ever just wanted to clear that up so one gets offended
noslacklover 4 years ago
Most "Blues Nazi's" are pretty closed minded. Real, pure, blues would only be played by old black men on out of tune cheap guitars. Which was so great and a progression from field hollers. I think performances like this are a tribute, an expansion, an interpretation, a progression and adaption of that pure blues. Just like it was Eric's, SRV's, Johnny Winter, EVEN Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, all the Kings etc. their interpretation of this early form. Blues is improvisational music.
garyguitar 4 years ago
I was there. It's the same old story with the blues people.
They ask for originality and when they get it they feel threatened and revert back to the same old rehashed crap.
The kid is truly an original. They should have gotten behind a rising star. It's a shame.

maybe too much originality.
1957fenderstrat 4 years ago
how can you have too much originality, music is what you make it, nad by god zack puts a whole new spin on the traditional blues, with the funk riffs and plucking techniques etc
moodymagpie 4 years ago
well yeh but it is a 'blues' contest. I don't know. I mean i could pluck all the strings open and call em original. This just sounded a bit unpolished. If that makes any sense.
1957fenderstrat 4 years ago
hes def. got potential, he was making lines.

noslacklover 4 years ago
ok so here we go there are alot of people here who seem to enjoy Zack's guitar playing and I would like to let those people in on how to get Zack's latest cd Tranquil Madness just click into my page and I'll give you the info if you ask me for it youtube will not let me post the email address in here
noslacklover 4 years ago
Ok so now everyone who has been sitting around kicking on those who enjoy this can kick on me too I reall dig this as for those who don't well let's all look at the facts here Zack is playing a strat which has been called the impossible guitar to play plus I heard somewhere that he plays with 10 strings which is a pretty damn thick string I can't even imagine making a strat with a 10 string sound that good but if those are 10s he did a great job
firelady178 4 years ago
Wow. Strats are not impossible to play...I'd like to know who said that. They are stupid. And .10's are not thick. Generally guitars come initially with .09's. Stevie Ray Vaughan played a strat and used .13-.18's. You obviously have some homework to do. Next time, before you make a comment like this, try to know what you're talking about.
bluesman91 4 years ago
You said it man. 10s? boohoo. try some 13's.
1957fenderstrat 4 years ago
The article the other day about Zack in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review has been the most emailed story at that paper's site all day Thurs and a good bit of Wed. Can't recall any entertainment story holding on all day in the most read or sent categories. Usually, only something written about the Steelers or some major political news story holds on all day as Zack's article has.
juls703 4 years ago
Very true this is a town where it's hard to get people to notice anything other than the football, baseball or hockey team. Go figure Zack would be the one person who would hold attention of major sports finatics.
noslacklover 4 years ago
i feel bad for him , being out of tune @ parts
but really his chops are good but he suffers from the problems most guitarists suffer from
a strat up high
he he had a les paul slung low and marshall cranked high , he probly would have won
jessenoah19 4 years ago
he's pretty much put the strat to bed these days and is now playing almost constantly on his Gibson SG it's sounding absolutely breath takingly amazing I love the Strat and always will but he's making that SG cryyyyyyyyy
noslacklover 4 years ago
Was in Memphis when Guitar Zack won the Albert King award in '06 and have seen him about the burgh since he started appearing on stage. Younz critics are so going to eat your words one day...
juls703 4 years ago
I agree completely juls and that day is comming alot sooner than these people want to believe. If you caught the New Year's Eve bash at Stonehenge you know exactly what I'm saying.
noslacklover 4 years ago
This guy won the whole thing? unbelievable.
His chicken pickin stuff is cool and the rest is OK at best.
ArizonaMatt 4 years ago
Bluesman91 I agree with you completley.
His tone is very harsh
GmIaBrScOoN 4 years ago
you enjoy Stevie Ray and John Mayer and find Zack harsh that's funny when he's been said to sound a great deal like both Stevie and John as well as Frank Zappa and Jimmy Hendrix perhaps you need to see some of his other videos
noslacklover 4 years ago
check out "Run A Muck" his live at Harvey's video and his "Star Spangled Voodoo Child" videos in Run A Muck he wrote the music himself it's one of his over 200 origional songs
noslacklover 4 years ago
thank you...and noslacklover: we obviously can not come to an agreement on this, as you see Zack and a great guitarist and I do not. Either way, whoever compared him to SRV or John Mayer is ridiculous. Jimi Hendrix I can see; same with Zappa. Both were good guitars...very innovative. But I think comparing Zack to any legend like that is going a little overboard.
bluesman91 4 years ago
Freak show! You might be able to get away with this if you and everyone in the audience is tripping!
groovadelicrelic 4 years ago
And as for you well you have alot of room to sit there talking shit on someone else when you have one video posted that wont even play yeah that's SRV pride and joy intro alright all I see is a few damn white dots going around in a circle I saw better crap than that when I was trippin back in the day back when you were still in diapers
noslacklover 4 years ago
ok so now your video is working and for the most part it's pretty good a little sloppy here and there but practice can fix that. However, unless you are already at the level of perfection you hope to reach you really should not go around knocking other people who are trying to reach their goals just because you are jealous that they may reach theirs before you reach yours
noslacklover 4 years ago
It's really sad to see this in a nation-wide "King of the Blues" competition. What has happened to the blues if THIS is one of the top 5 unknown blues guitarists in our country? This is just sad.
bluesman91 4 years ago
well bluesman perhaps you should enter as it seems you think you could do better there is a contest every year it's not too early to sign up for the 2008 King of the Blues contest you know
noslacklover 4 years ago
hahaha ok buddy. i am a good guitarist. i however, do not belong in the King of the Blues competition. Both in my opinion, and the opinions of pretty much everyone else who's posted here: he doesn't either.
if you want to look at it from a technical standpoint, his tone is poor, his rhythm frankly just sucks, and would you like to tell me what he is doing from 1:29 to 1:32?
But just so i can understand your opinion: what traits, as a guitarist, does Zack possess that makes him a great guitarist?
bluesman91 4 years ago
Zack's tone quality is superb as it's not a copy of anybody else and it can be copied by very few others his tone is extremely unique and that's what people don't get they are looking for the same old crap they've always heard and they wont find it here Zack is another Stevie Ray whom by the way nobody got in the beginning either
noslacklover 4 years ago
