well, no offense, but your religion teacher may be wrong. the Bible actually does say in the OT that Jesus' face wouldn't even be recognizable. And those lashes were appropriately done. They had bones and rocks on their ends. 39 lashes were given, because it was said that 40 would result in death (or some number similar). He was given right below what would constitute death. The problem is that our world has given this image that Jesus' death wasn't all that bad, when in fact it was.
