In regards to all of the comments talking bad about Nixon's appearance; Nixon was ill at the time of this debate. Kennedy, additionally, had the upper hand because he was taught how to debate on television, while Nixon was not.
People who watched the debate said Kennedy was better, but those who listened on the radio said it was Nixon who was.
@ColdreichCommentary You say both were fine presidents? You must only be speaking of Kennedy, Nixon was a crook who thought the president was allowed to make the rules.
@MrRickyeager It's not a crime when the President does it.
You obviously don't know much about Nixon. Sure he was a little paranoid, but he did many things for this country and other countries. Relations with countries no one would talk to before.
@ColdreichCommentary Also, during this period of time to get the picture through to the TVs they needed to use a really hot light, that's shining right at the person. Nixon, at the time, was wearing make-up, and started to sweat from the heat.
Nixon had a 104 degree temperature during this debate! That's why he didn't look so good. people who watched the debate on tv liked JFK, but people who heard it on radio liked Nixon more. So Nixon would have won if there was no tv
No he wouldn't have been Robert Kennedy wouldn't have either for obvious reasons, also Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, wouldn't have either because that guy in there now is unqualified and has no idea what he's doing at all just indocrination that's all it is and perjury worst economy because of the guy who's in there and now we need a new deal because it's an economic depression
But Nixon if you notice when he speaks, he is looking right at you in the camera, and that speaks vol to. And people watching this at home noticed that to.
Everyone who heard this debate thought that Nixon won this debate. Everyone who watched it thought JFK won. JFK was a pathetic pretty boy. Nixon was a real hero.
@catscatscatz he definetely wasn't just a pretty boy, though he used his charisma to his advantage. Nixon was a good leader but he was currupt and only cared really about the interest of his party whereas Kennedy risked his career giving civil rights and pushing vital reforms. Both were good leaders like i say
@L4Pu3nT3 Nixon was involved in Watergate, big woop. Vietnam, huge mistake but then we were worried about the Communist threat. Now we worry about terrorist threats in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, North Korea, and in our backyard. But Nixon did open China and without them we'd have full employment, more expensive goods, and no debt, no lead paint. creds to johncfl
At least Nixon knew what the fuck he was doing, unlike the puppets after him, he was pretty much the last true president. JFK is probably my favorite and most like president as I think I resemble him the best.
NIxon was a very serious man. He didn't care for foolishness, nor did he waste time on idle pursuits. But I still wonder how he would view characterizations of himself in popular culture today. Would he be pleased that his preserved head is governing the entire planet? Or that he and Kennedy had found a common enemy in the Zombie menace? I'm pretty sure he would pass on animated or computer generated celebrity, in favor of being viewed as a good president who tried to do his best for his country

I think our universe got the short end of the stick. JFK, RFK shot, Nixon eventually got his presidency and thereafter, the U.S. year after year gets worse. People relations has improved but pretty much still the same, which is rotten. Remember Nixon took the dollar off the Gold. Ever since, the dollar keeps sinking. In the future, Mexicans will probably semi take hold of this country.. We don't even an identity as AMERICANs anymore. Who are we?
Whoa, Nixon did incredibly well. While I agree with JFK's policies, his rhetoric was weak in this speech. He took the easy road of "USSR=SCARY" "USA=AWESOME" "REPUBLICANS=EVIL", which you can't blame him for, as I'd do the same if I wanted to get elected. Nixon gambled on the hard road of solid arguments, and lost.
Those that listened to it on the radio thought Nixon won. Those that saw it on TV thought Kennedy won. It was the moments at 1:41 and 5:09 that painted Nixon as 'angry' looking. That tipped it.
@EHSBasketballKXLE I feel that those who saw the debate on TV skewed younger than the old-timers who clung to their radios. Those who skewed younger were more likely to go for Kennedy, who represented youth. The fact of their differing performances on TV, while still a key factor, overlooks this fact. Younger people had TVs, older people had radios. TV people went for JFK, radio people went for Nixon... they aren't the same demographic. Just an opinion that I shared with my class today.
These guys looks like professors while current politicians have no fucking substance and cannot conduct a proper sentence without saying "um" every 10 seconds or speaking convincingly. Nixon and Kennedy knew EXACTLY what they were talking about.
Nixon, truly, would have been outstanding. Kennedy was a very good president but Nixon was the man. Though it is uncertain how he would handle our relations towards Communist Russia, it is certain that he had the experience. When elected in the 1970s, Nixon helped boost the economy, get us out of Vietnam and establish friendly relations with China and the USSR. Something good ol'Johnson would never do. :P Johnson = A failure.
In solidarity with the American people -- & all people -- I call on the current president, his surviving predecessors, Congress, and all U.S. & intl. media; on all who spoke/wrote yesterday to honor President Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his inauguration: to speak/write now to honor & examine, for the benefit of the American people -- & all people -- his Executive Order 11110 & its fate. President Kennedy stood up for all of you. Now who of you will stand up for President Kennedy? Who?????
After that debate was taken, they took a pole on what the people thought. people who saw it on tv thought that kennedy did better. While those who heard it on radio thought nixon did better. So yeah..........
But notice how Nixon looks right at the camera and takes, he is actually speaking to the people at home in their living rooms watching this live. See that right there is a selling point, notice how Kennedy is talking to the guys in the front chairs there. I must say I'm surprised to see him doing that
@Holycrap27 Don;t kid yourself...Nixon won this debate hands down...and unanimously the radio audience agreed. Don't be fooled by style over substance.
Nixon looks like a genius compared to todays politicians. Kennedy looks like he's from a different universe compared. Why are we so dumbed down these days?
Back in the day when politicians weren't dumb as fuck. Tough questions like these would have modern politicians stumbling over their words making no sense not ever really able to come up with an answer. Americas time has passed.
LOL! Unlikley! Billy West, who voices nearly every male voice on FUTURAMA including Nixon's head, has explained the genesis of Nixon and the ARROO! catch phrase. Turns out, young BILLY WEST was watching the Kennedy Nixon debates when he was a kid. West noticed, as did everyone else, that Nixon's trademark 5 o'clock shadow was darkening his face even as the debate progressed, or so it seemed. Billy yelled, "HEY MOM! He's turning into a werewolf! AAHRROOO!
I love how the issues then are the same issues today. AND that the personalities are essentially the same. Kennedy is intellectual-while Nixon clearly has trouble with facts......Kennedy interested in the welfare of the country ie education, healthcare, economy, natural resources., Nixon interested in lining his own pockets.
i heard people who heard this on radio thought that nixon won debate but people who watched it thought jfk won debate, according to polls back then. weird huh?
I thought JFK sounded quite good, especially when he said that the responsibility of the president and leadership was to inform the people of the unfinished business of the present and not of the past. If only we had such leadership now. Nixon was stilted and treaded water on the Ike question, but it was rather "gotcha" for that era and he sounded suprised by it.
Nixon called JFK "Naive" and "Immature"; however Nixon is the one who cheated and lied about it because he didn't want to leave office. So which person sounds more immature?
Did somebody notice you nicely JFK countered critics on his leadership skills and didn't say anything bad about his opponent. This speaks of his better attitude..
The cut-back shots of Nixon were not good -- although on substance both did well here. And the press asked questions of substance rather than the inane, gotcha-type they ask often today.
You can tell that this whole debate is scripted. They are reading scripts/cue cards. Obviously the questions were given to the canidates ahead of time. SAD.
You can tell that this whole debate is scripted. They are reading scripts/cue cards. Obviously the questions were given to the canidates ahead of time. SAD.
I remember reading that, the advice to Nixon to try and appear more likeable. I laughed my ass off! Sometimes you can't judge a book by its cover, but in this case...Those beady eyes, that nose, greased hair, Nixon looked every inch the lying, scumbag he was. Kennedy was a frickin adonis in comparison. On a lighter note, one of my friends, her thong, is emblazoned with the phrase All The Way With JFK. I don't know any female who'd want Nixon near her crotch, even if it was just his name.

Did nixon ever say ARROOO!?

@sluggo06 "Did Nixon ever say ARROO!?"
LOL!

AH, Politics. The same since the dawn of time.

I don't like the way Nixon portrays Eisenhower. I mean, if Eisenhower declined Nixon's offer to be Nixon's vice president, I think that means a lot.

So which person sounds more immature?
catclaw357 1 year ago
Did somebody notice you nicely JFK countered critics on his leadership skills and didn't say anything bad about his opponent. This speaks of his better attitude..
mnaeemaq 1 year ago
@mnaeemaq Its true Nixon insulted JFK and JFK said that Nixon was a good leader of the Republican party.
catclaw357 1 year ago
@catclaw357 Yup. I hope USA now has even half a guy as President as JFK was.

Has anyone else noticed the creepy sound that plays directly after Nixon says " I have no comment" (1:45)
PhatBeat128 1 year ago
I like them both. Either one of them would be better in the White House than Obama.
