People don't understand how Crime of the Century was supposed to be Supertramp's concept of heavy metal. Not over the top cream puffery. The volume of this song was supposed to be pumped up while, just as high pitched as Roger Hodgson vocals tended to be on the album, the profound and deep bass and percussion on it balanced him out perfectly. Crime of the Century was a masterpiece as it served as a dramatic crossroads where Black Sabbath (Rick D.) collided with Michael Jackson (Roger H.).
I've loved Supertramp since I first heard the album Crime of the Century. It wasn't untill the bands split that I realized the vast majority of my favorite songs were by Roger Hodgson. I just love the way his songs start out like a slow locamotive train and then build faster and louder until they reach a crescendo and then he slowly and gently drops you back off at your stop where you thank him for the wonderful trip. Peace.
@makingsense53 Don't underestimate Rick D. He wasn't the one found to be a match for Roger H., but just the opposite was true. Rick was every bit as incredible and I didn't realize that until Roger left. Rick made songs up on the spot. Roger had made up most of his songs by the time he was twelve. They both were best at backing up the other in support. As Roger plays that incredible guitar interlude in Crime of the Century, Rick plays the harmonica in the intro to School.
@MisterNifty I agree that Rick D and all the members of Supertramp were intregal parts of the whole. I always thought the argument about who was the more important Beatle - Lennon or McCartney was ridiculous, because what they both contributed made the songs better. Don't get me wrong I love these Roger Hodgsons solo videos with the orchestra, BUT I would much rather see and hear Suprtramp playing these songs together in harmony. Peace.
@makingsense53 But this song was the surprising part of the album. Oh, the piano interlude on school was a bit on the light side sure, but the rest of the album are best described dark. When first listening to this song, I was at first fooled by a deeper false chorus and then surprised by the uplifting true chorus of it. This is where the song and ablum wins out ultimately. Listen to it again and give me your opinion. The songs cycle around forever while its departure point is at this song.
@Mikebird59 Yes that's the first thing I noticed! I just taped one of his concerts last week in front of an enthusiastic audience. Great song nevertheless!!!
@Mikebird59 This is exactly the type of audience he and other great musicians deserve, attentive, quiet, I've been to two Pink Floyd concerts, everyone was super quiet. It is actually more honorable to be quiet.
@Mikebird59 yeah and when you got home you would still not have seen and heard him in person...its like idiots who spend all the concert filming it on a mobile phone rather thanb watch it properly...just so they can post some shitty clip on youtube.
sit down, listen, stfu..... and go home and remember it...finding things to do while a musician is performing....well they are either shite performers...or you havent got a brain.
Hide in the Shell is a Classic Roger Hodgson song. I don't even think of supertramp with this song. I love your music Roger thanks for the great shows this year on your world tour. I hope we get another great DVD or CD soon.
Roger is the voice of Supertramp, he is the drive and genius that made the band, he'll always be Mr. Supertramp. This is the eighth year of his world tours and he sounds better now then 30 years ago. I am so glad he has come into his own and reclaiming his songs - BRILLIANT! everyone should see a Roger Hodgson show at least once in their life
Many thanks to Bradrndavis for bringing in this video!

It was a wondeful show in Bonn. A great Orchestra from Hungary played from their heart with Roger. Only the drummer wasn't all the time present.
