The crank isn't so easy to get smooth, look at 1:51 and you can see that its not very smooth. Much easier to just push the cam with your hand smoothly.
As with anything, practice makes perfect. Also I find that to get more consistent slides, you can wrap a piece of thread or thin rope around the handle and pull on that. The circular handle is designed to do that, it even has an eyelet to hold the thread in place.
of course practice helps a lot, but if you are in locations where you have to be in awkward footing of body positions, then all practice is out the window. At least for me, I feel like I have to train my shoulder and elbow to work together smoothly to get the crank working well. In the meantime, I have removed the crank on pocketdolly and placed a hefty tripod head and just push or pull the slider. I have never had enough hiccups or consistent slide with this method.
I believe that this is due to the size of the crank itself. I feel that it should be larger, but i know that this will be in the way. You can get somewhat of a smooth slide if it is a slow glide, but if you want to have a fast slide, you will get this speedup at the arc of your full rotation.
The crank is a good idea, but it does not work (at least for me) to provide a consistent slide. I find that when you turn the crank, there are moments where there will be speed ups when you reach an arching on either direction.
What is the difference between a dolly and a slider?

I think the crank makes it look a bit more mechanical than handmovement (by ptting hands on either side of head mount... just my observations

Great review, cheers! Thinking about investing in one.... One question: what model of legs are you using with your 501HDV head??

Sorry, I meant "I have never had any hiccups or inconsistent slide with this method".
Since I am very anal with sliding shots , I opted to buy the motion control just to be safe.
Good review video though. Thank you for sharing.
