I can't believe how many have said you cannot look away from the plane to see if the runway is clear. If your plane is so unstable that you cannot glance in the name of safety for a dog or a toddler, then your aircraft is unairworthy and should not be flown in the presence of people. Yeah, the camera guy was wrong but the flyer missed his chance to be a better pilot.
If the camera guy is not RC people, then he could have used some advice not to go out there. We would be better pilots if we got in the habit of glancing ahead of our machines. I don't think it's any one person's fault. I think we should work together when it comes to safety.
I think the guy trying to catch the cam angle is at fault.. If a cam guy inter-feared in a basketball game to get a view of the slam dunk and got hit with a tripped player or a loose ball it would be the cam guys fault. He should have known where he was vs- the plane. What if it had crash landed with no control. You need to know your surroundings

Well, I fly planes myself, and we always announce loudly to everyone around us when we're coming in to land or doing extremely low flybys. Both were at fault here. Cameraman shouldn't have been in the middle of the landing area and the pilot should have communicated his intentions. Because, when you start to land these things your really focused on that plane and trying to make the best landing possible. Tnce you commit it's too late to be looking for obstacles.
The pilot did nothing wrong. The camera man was 110% at fault. If you want to shoot these kind of videos, both need a spotter. One near the pilot acting as the look out, cuz the pilot cannot take his eyes of the plane, and one near the camera man cuz he is focused on getting the shot.

I do agree with you 100% that the videographer should have not been there period. However, imagine if this was a small chilld who ran out on the runway, would you say "Dumb Ass child, Dumb Ass Parents' or Dumb Ass Pilot"? A Spotter or SO is there for a reason...
AMA rules say "Spotter" at all times. Even though the videography is on the runway, the pilot is at fault. He is the one in control of the airplane and he could have gone around or crashed it somewhere else. I do agree with you 100% that the videographer should have not been there period. However, imagine if this was a small chilld who ran out on the runway, would you say "Dumb Ass child, Dumb Ass Parents' or Dumb Ass Pilot"? A Spotter or SO is there for a reason...

AMA rules say "Spotter" at all times. Even though the videography is on the runway, the pilot is at fault. He is the one in control of the airplane and he could have gone around or crashed it somewhere else. Amazing how so many comments are about the how stupid this videography was, but no one's life is worth an RC plane period! The plane can be rebuilt, fixed or a new one purchased! Also, the pilot showed lack of professionalism by worrying about his plane first. Where is the Safety Officer at?

@IMRROcom I guess you are the camera guy! I was actually targeting the pilot. 1) he should have had a spotter. 2) should have announced "Landing". if he would have been follow those two simple rules you wouldn't have gotten nailed or whomever the video guy was....and then to make it worse on the pilots behalf...he started checking out the plane first for damage.....it would be like running over someone in your car, stopping the car and inspecting the damage to the car before the person..sad...
