I read the book...while in Afghanistan... mad me glad I'm a p.o.g.. their OIC/LT (I think it was Murphy) walked in the open just to get good reception on his comms. They all literally jumped over a cliff to survive, but Luttrell was the only one who survived because a village of Afghans took him in and protected him against Al Qaeda. Afghanistan did not directly attack us, but, the taliban, who was more or less in charge of the government at the time of 9/11, sheltered Osama Bin Laden and the al Qaeda after several requests to hand him over to the U.S. government, and in doing so, made our aim to not only capture Bin Laden, but to also to eradicate the taliban. everytime i hear about the stupid extraction situation it just didnt make sense, why didnt they send an attack helicopter, or a gun ship and secure the area first, it just seemed like a complete waste sending in the extraction like that someone needs to be held accountable for that call
@impleasen Not always as easy as that. Sending a gunship to clear the way would've been great in a perfect world, to be sure. Gunships are rarely on station unless you're near a major operating base, they require a lot to maintain and supply their operations. Waiting for a gunship escort on the rescue helicopter could've pushed the rescue an hour or more back. They played the odds, knowing full-well the risk they were taking to save their brothers, unfortunately it cost 16 good lives.

Afghanistan did not directly attack us, but, the taliban, who was more or less in charge of the government at the time of 9/11, sheltered Osama Bin Laden and the al Qaeda after several requests to hand him over to the U.S. government, and in doing so, made our aim to not only capture Bin Laden, but to also to eradicate the taliban. Iraq is neither here nor there in this convorsation.

His "military buds" are most likely SF operators and they don't usually have time to fuck around with the full names of things. Shortening words and using acronyms shorten the time to communicate effectively which is important in their line of work.

everytime i hear about the stupid extraction situation it just didnt make sense, why didnt they send an attack helicopter, or a gun ship and secure the area first, it just seemed like a complete waste sending in the extraction like that someone needs to be held accountable for that call

@impleasen Not always as easy as that. Sending a gunship to clear the way would've been great in a perfect world, to be sure. Gunships are rarely on station unless you're near a major operating base, they require a lot to maintain and supply their operations. Waiting for a gunship escort on the rescue helicopter could've pushed the rescue an hour or more back. They played the odds, knowing full-well the risk they were taking to save their brothers, unfortunately it cost 16 good lives.
