Wow Cary Bates looks different -- this was probably more than 10 years before I met him. He and I used to have offices near each other (in the same hall) so we'd often sit around and chit-chat about stuff at Universal Studios Florida 1989-1992. He's a really cool guy, but I lost touch with him when he moved to California ca 1992. He gave me a ton of his comics and books before he left, I still have many of them.
Ok, I love Christopher Reeve, but, how exactly do the "casting crew" cast people that have never read the book or the comic book they are about to play a character from, every time? It's just funny :p
"I get more enjoyment out of seeing a young one's smiling face staring into a comic book that I drew than I could possibly get out of having all of the money, praise and accolades in the world." SUPERMAN could not have said it better.
my favorite quote about curt swan is from neal dams:
When Denny O'Neil took over the SUPERMAN writing chores, he knew that there would be no problems with the art. O'Neill said, "Swan was the best, a quiet man and not much noticed and consequently underrated because he never caused a fuss; he simply delivered anything an editor asked for, met any challenge and did it with the reliability of the tides."
@tedm1975 I agree. I have his tribute book- "Curt Swan: A Life In Comics." It contains a ton of commision work and pencil drawings by Swan, plus a color section. There are also interviews with many legendary comic book artists that just heap praises about his artistic ability, especially his proper rendering of anatomy. He may not have been as exciting and dynamic as Kirby, but I think he was the better artist fundamentally.
As characterized by critic Paul Gravett, Swan's Superman made ". . . Krypton's last son in exile, the alien in our midst, into someone like us, who would think and feel as well as act, who was approachable, big-hearted, considerate, maybe physically superpowerful yet gentle, noble yet subtly tragic."
Critic Arlen Schumer praises Swan's ability to depict "the spectrum of human emotion, from agony to anger, mournful to mirthful."
seigel n shuster started drawing at 17 or did they just come up with the concept of superman then? if so i wonder if their art sucked as bad as mine did when i started a year ago lol
what do you think why they are a pair of names, spiegel was the writer of superman and shuster the artist who created the looks most memorable superhero of them all.
and if you think of the times they looked good, just like kanes batman rocked, just look at action comics 1 and you'll know how supes looked, one of the best batman covers of those days was detective comics 31.
my fave period is the 60s, so many great artists from kirby over swan to ditko and adams.

and here is what curt swan thought of his work:
"I get more enjoyment out of seeing a young one's smiling face staring into a comic book that I drew than I could possibly get out of having all of the money, praise and accolades in the world." SUPERMAN could not have said it better.

I would put Curt Swan up there with Jack Kirby, John Romita and Steve Ditko.

I recognize Julie from dozens of Sid Greene stories where he'd always slip a likeness of him into the background somewhere.

Man, what a find. Watching Julie and Cary develop a story is fun, even if they are just play acting for the cameras!

What a great time to be alive - when Curt Swan was drawing Superman!

God rest Christopher Reeve, Julie Schwartz and Curt Swan, who fortified the foundation of SUPERMAN after Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster built it.
