hey dude, great video btw. i got your cam but with the compression set to YUY2 i can only get maximum of 10fps with 1280x720 whether i set the FPS or resolution first. I get lag with MJPG! How do I solve this?!
Have you ever tried doing this with Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder? I use that with other gear to record 1080P with H.264 Mainline compression using my Intel quad-core Nehalem processor which has 8 processor threads. I'm wondering if it works with this camera. Skype HD would be nice too but it's not certified for Skype, at least not yet.
I got a Lifecam Studio and wanted to capture a video in Virtualdub, but in VD is no Video Source.I can use the cam with the original Software. How can i fix this? I hope you can help me....
The virtual dub can be used when you are livestreaming? like for example the cam has a bad sound and i can improve it with the program as the quality of image
@JoacoTips Virtualdub will indeed make a very large file. You can compress it afterward with VirtualDub or a video editing program. There are lots of tutorials on Youtube in regards to compressing video. As for YUY2, nope.
Thank you for doing this, I was debating between the Lifecam studio and the Logitech C910 and all the video reviews with the standard software looked terrible when capturing motion.
I've used virtualdub before and have gone through the nightmare of fighting through all its various menus, so it's really nice of you to make a guide to using it.
I understand that while you're recording you don't want to use compression. But uncompressed video eats space quickly. What do you use after recording?
i find that setting divx to 10mbps single pass, my computer is able to capture and compress in real time with plenty of overhead and work with my slow ass HDD. lower bit rates take more effort for a computer to compress
Just a followup to previous comments (including mine) about not being able to select 20fps at 1080p. It depends on the CPU. Previously, I had a Core2Duo E6600, and was only able to select a max of 10fps. I just installed a new i7 and now the 20fps option is available.
@jsprty Further, there were dropped frames and artifacts during capture, until I hooked up the LifeCam to one of the USB 3.0 ports instead of a regular 2.0 (I assume yours is connected via USB3.0 as well?)
Did you use the MS lifecam for your tutorial? If so, how did you get the image of your face so small in the corner of the screen? My lenovo doesn't have a build in cam so I want to use the lifecam studio to do tutorials.
So, with regards to some of us not being able to choose 20fps, I did some searching on the web--there is mention that hard drive speed plays a role, and that at 1080p and 20fps, average drives (7200rpm) can't write the capture data fast enough.
What kind/speed of hard drive(s) do you use? Wondering if this is the reason why some of us cannot select 20fps.
@jsprty I record to a 7200 RPM drive, a 2 TB Western Digital Caviar Black. Your drive speed shouldn't prevent you from selecting 20 FPS in Virtualdub - it should just under-perform if your drive isn't up to the task.
Followed your settings closely; except when choosing 1920x1080, the Frame Rate field does not allow anything other than 5fps--unless I change the "Color Space/Compression" to MJPG. And when proceeding to capture the video, horizontal lines/artifacts keep appearing every few seconds, along with dropped frames (even in the resulting .avi). Gah! Does the performance of this depend on the video card? I'm stumped...
Okay thanks, I tried it on my brother desktop computer and he can get 20 fps perfectly with 1080p but it always darkens it in order to get 20fps...and its really really dark to a point where you can barely make out anything, i'm going to reinstall the program and follow all the instructions again, what is your system specs, maybe my computer isn't strong enough?
Okay now i'm mad...I get it at 30fps at half the resolution it is supposed to do and it darkens the brightness or exposure so low that the quality is just horrible, I payed 100$ for this?....btw it isn't my computer intel i5 processor 2.27GHz clocked up on extreme turbo, 4gm ram @ 64bit, 1gb nvidia gts 350m.....can someone tell me what the hell is wrong? I am seriously about to take this back and buy the logitech, its cheaper and it can actually record in 1080p without screwing with settings
@MikeColosi Not sure what to tell ya. The video contains the entire process and all the settings I use to record the way I do with that cam at 1080p 20fps. Make sure you've disabled all of the automatic stuff.
My 1080p and 720p resolutions won't allow my FPS rate to go above 10fps, is there any way i can fix this? btw I have the same camera as you, but it shows you can get 20 so there must be a way to fix this, any clue?
Nice and useful video. I use VirtualDub for a few of my video encoding tasks, never thought about using it for a webcam.
I have the Creative C910 and pretty much hate it, I feel like creative lied about half of its abilities esp under Win 7 64bit and 1080p recording. Thinking about getting the MS Studio but wish we had a good head 2 head review.
Glad to see you put this on here, these are almost the exact same settings I use (I drop exposure even lower, usually -6 or -7). It's amazing to see how many people are using this great webcam, only to absolutely destroy their quality by relying on Microsoft's pathetic auto-settings.
@hamsteralliance thats unfortunate man, btw just out of curiosity what is the next game u will be playing man, could i give an idea for a mistery adventure game, would like to see u play 1 of those again though. ;)
