Grief what an idiotic accompanist. Pavarotti's struggling to keep up with the tempo and as a result the singing is very clumsy. The pianist is supposed to go with the singer's tempo, not the other way around. Stupid pianist.
This was disappointing. Pavarotti has been my favorite since I first heard him 30 odd years ago. I've heard him in performance four times. This wasn't his best. Actually I think he was afraid that tinny piano would break down. The accompanist wasn't too bad, but the piano sounded like an upright in a saloon somewhere. Go ahead and thumb me down. It's an opinion.
As I said, it was an opinion. The piano was tinny - out of tune. The performance seemed hesitant to me. That's unusual for both Pavarotti and his accompanist. Again, its an opinion. I'm not on crack just because I disagree with you. Who do you think you are?
I'm sorry I didn't mean to belligerant...however, the piano being a tiny bit out of tune is not Wustman's fault...he played the fool out of this thing...how many accompanists can play it this well? Very few....very, very few indeed. And how many can sing it this well? Very, very few....if any. Sorry for my language in the previous post...I got a little worked up I apologize.
No problem. I actually heard pavarotti four times in person, and I think Wustman was his accompanist on at least half of those. At least I've heard the name before. Even the best accompanist is sometimes stuck with something less than the best piano. That can really suck. Back in the day I got to sing with Nelson Eddy's accompanist Theodore Paxson. He was my vocal coach for awhile. Another truly fine musician. Accompanists don't get nearly the credit they deserve.
So true...I once performed Ives's "Tolerance" which is absolutely ridiculous for a pianist to play and I made sure that my pianist got tons of love when we bowed...a good accompanist makes a performance infinitely better and a bad one can destroy some pieces.
Thank you for your kind words about me being the most ignorant person. You're not quite right to say that I claimed Villazon does it better. In fact I said I l i k e d him better. That's perception, not ignorance, in case you did'n know.
You are correct, Cheezochka. This is a tough piece, which requires Wagnerian stamina to maintain forward movement, without slipping into declamatory chant. Villazon sings it right, despite occasionally being out of breath, while Pav - a wonderful singer - is more concerned with the vocal presentation. Accompaniment sucks too, in part because the piano follows the singer. I do not even know, who could do this song full justice; perhaps Melchior :-)
This is not Pavarotti at his best - for some reason, he just seems short of breath and like he can't keep up with the tempo. He might actually be making it more difficult by singing it slowly. Oh, well...this just proves that he is human!
I like the Pavarotti version better. Although not technically brilliant with this version, I think this song needs to be sung by more of a Lyric tenor, not a dramatic tenor and a bit more legato. The Villazon version is a bit harsh for this type of music. I like the speed as well IMHO.
Pavarotti's phrasing sounds a little better than most tenors here thanks to taking "La Danza" at an easier tempo - I wonder if Pavarotti ever sang it as fast as Villazon - ha-ha - anyway, the best "La Danza" still belongs to Mario Lanza as sung in his 1956 film "Serenade"
The problem lies with "sung in a film." Automatically means he is not the best, nor is it the best rendition. Live performances should always be the standard.
Villazon is a pathetic clown like baritone Domingo who thinks he is a tenor, like apes clawing for a banana they will never reach. Comparing him to King Pavarotti is sheer blasphemy.
Did I understand correctly that someone has dared compare the clown Villazon to the grand Maestro? Now that is an egregious assault to good taste. The name Villazon should never be uttered in the same sentence as Pavarotti.
After Villazon Lucia's disaster on Feb 29 everyone should be convinced that he [Villazon] should be banned from every single opera house. Please search "Villazon Cracks" it's an audio file from the incident on February 29. His partner in crime Netrebko failed the two E flats; it was horrendous
Uhm, why bring Rolando into this clip (I'm pretty sure I'm listening to Luciano here!)? ;)
As far as my knowledge goes, neither Villazon nor Netrebko sang any Lucia on Feb 29. If you mean the Jan 26 disaster, yes, that was extremely painful. I don't think Rolando should be banned. I just think that his calendar should be cleared, and he should be spending time with some serious vocal coaching to save what is left of his voice.
This is not the best Pavarotti's performance. He seems to have problems with the high notes. His own version with James Levine is better in terms of voice, although he made a terrible mistake with the lyrics in that version.
Problems with his high notes? As if!! I personally don't like this slowish tempo, but it was nice to hear all the words so easily, and Pavarotti was clearly enjoying himself.
Villazon does La Danza Better, Im sorry to all the Pavarotti fans, He was a true tenor, but he sings La Danza with no passion and it doesnt look like he is enjoying it either! Villazon is a young tenor so give him chance!
I especially think that Wustman has done a great job... With all the wonderful accompaniments cds he has recorded singers should be really grateful to him
Naduwa-In English please? LoL..What did you say? Don't even use Villazon's name here. He's an insult to the beautiful Italian repertoire with his throaty and hooted voice and feeble technique.
Actually he sounds perfect in breath. He races big time in the live rendition at the Met with Maestro Levine, who was ripping through La Danza like there was no tomorrow...still very pleasant though. If memory serves me well, he even skipped a half line to catch up to Levine..check it out. Quite hilarious.
Maybe you are right, but I still think he sounds breathless in some parts, don't you think?. Perhaps I have listened too many times his fantastic CD version , and this recording sounds to me a little unusual. :)

The "German" at the piano is in fact John Wustman, one of the most famous accompanists in the world, and he gave a wonderful performance during this recital.
This was definitely his prime time. Fantastic video and great, great vision by music editors from NDR (North-German TV) to get him do this recital for them! John Wustman at the piano.

Already the moon is rising over the sea, mamma mia how we'll dance. It's a good time for dancing, whoever is in love will not fail to be there. Already the moon is rising over the sea.
Quickly dance round and round, ladies, come here. a handsome and cheerul youth will dance with each girl. As long as a star trinkles in the sky and the moon shines, the most handsome man and the most beautiful

like his singing so much.
just a little disappointed on the accompanist. he's not supporting the singer adequately. otherwise, the performance would had been be great.
