I think the main thing to consider is that around the time Destroyer came out they had only really hit with Alive so they needed something to really push themselves into the mind of the culture at large and they chose a very tried and true way of doing it. Gene's version scared people to death. Got this album after begging my parents, then scared my grandmother because God of Thunder was the one song I would walk around singing! Kiss ROCKS!

the gene version is 100 times better. It's probably the first true heavy metal song of the 70ies in the US. It kicks the ass of all that shit from the 80ies (Motley Crue, WASP, etc) But, since Paul actually wrote it...is it really Gene's song, after all? It's a Stanley composition; Gene just sings it that's all. Paul is the man, Paul IS KISS! The only good songs Simmons did was Deuce and Journey of 1000 yrs...oh and a few stuff on Revenge too, like Unholy, etc. Simmons is a very bad songwriter

@cutiechristy99 actually this is the orignal they give the song to gene because they thought he was more suited to sing the song so obviously they changed the lyrics to fit his character and refined the song as well.But yeah only reason paul's version never got polished and refined as well is easy to explain gene's version kicked major ass & the fans loved it and still do til this day.Though i think they are lost as a band i can hear it in sonic boom,Theres no inspiration left.saddens me.

@bkeener86 i still love the album but i can't ignore what i hear,If you listen to paul he's either sick or not puting his best when it comes to vocals anymore like the only reason he has and money and keeping fans happy even though inside i think due to personal reasons he'd like to focus on his family full time and really eric and tommy as the ones with the most energy in the album but gene does good but not his best not like they said in interviews their not stronger then ever before.

Gene was dating Cher at the time, Peter went country, sort of, Paul was Paul, and Ace fucking broke the barrier with New York Groove, and Snowblind....1978...what a fucking time THAT was. Ever seen Kiss meets the Phantom of the Park? Lousy acting...great KISS. Was broadcast on TV for all to see.

i find this version much much better (although gene tries to fuck this 1 up too with the diana ross-like backing vocals) than the studio version by gene (the live 1nes i like especially anaheim 1976 thats the best 1) but was gene drunk? or was he mentally ill when he recorded his vocals for the destroyer version he sounds like a spazmo to me...& todays kiss are more like gods of blunders instead of rock n roll...
