In many aspects, primarily political aspects when it comes to government and how it should be ran, I'm conservative (and I do not believe either Bush or McCain were conservative), but, somehow, I feel as if I am one of the very few non-religious conservatives on this planet.
And yes, religion can be a problem, but I say, let people believe what they want to believe when they're in this country.
I have several hobbies and this is one. Again speaking out isn't some alien bizarre new thing that hasn't proven useful. Our nation was founded with a letter of complaint. Women can vote because of loud-mouthed complainers in the streets. I'm an all-American in action.
i bet your headquarters arent as reaching as "joel osteens"its too bad you waste all your time trying to push your silly beliefs off on people who dont care.
charliedontsurf70 So just calling into a radio show and expressing my opinion is "trying to push" my beliefs on people? By that logic, why are you pushing your beliefs on me here? lolol! You're stepping on your own shoes.
I believe people should be able to worship as they want and if Hyde Park Baptist wants to restrict their services to Baptist tenants, then why is that a problem? Tell you what, the next time you atheists decide to hold a convention, give me a call so that I can make a Christian speech. We'll see how tolerant you are. If I want to be intolerant of other religions (I am not, by the way.) then why is that any of your concern? Tolerance is tolerance whether on my end or yours.
monmichka77--Well I agree that religious groups should have free association, and worship as they want. It's not a problem for me or most Atheists, I'm sure. You're right, we wouldn't want to have a pro-Christian speech at our convention, though we have had some. I was just saying that religion is like that naturally - and not some overly tolerant giant loving family of humans, like Jesus talked about...lol
Good job Joe. I use to call in to 590 about once a month and after they realized I was going to light Sam's fire they stopped passing me through. I remember being on hold for 30 minutes once and when I called back the screener said the conversation was over. Other times I would be told by the screener that my message would be passed on and thanks for calling in...click. Glad you got through and loved the shock they got for hearing the reality of your point.
Jimmal001 - Right, plus isn't it odd that they don't want to discuss religion that "deeply," but they do want public school students to have to pledge to it, and blindly accept it all. I say if this is deep to the adults, certainly children shouldn't be expected to embrace it.
Indeed, although 'odd' is clearly the least of it. I'd get on to my local fundy radio show, but this is the UK and I'm not sure we have many. Except for the few US branches we have over here! It's a minor invasion
I understand not wanting other faiths there, but how could they not understand what is meant by "inter-religious"? They were supposed to host an inter-religious Thanksgiving service. people pray at Thanksgiving, DUH... But I'm glad it was at Congregation Beth Israel instead, I've been there and they are awesome.
lookatdoor--Well "inter-religious" is an oxymoron, isn't it? Since there are so many different religions, and people are supposed to be free to make up their own religions and exclude people with other religions, there can be no pure religious agreement among different religions.
Muslims are screaming out for criticism. Don't mistake that for hate.
it's not always an oxymoron. don't mistake what for hate? you weren't very clear. The radio people kept mentioning Muslims, but there were going to be other non-christians there as well. The Church was particularly upset about the Muslims more than anyone else. That's what I mean about everyone hating Muslims.
Islam is the closest religion to Christianity, but (fundie)Christians never want to hear that.
lookatdoor--again, one religion just isn't designed to co-exist with another differing religion. Islam and Christianity are sufficiently different from each other to start wars, again. Even slight differences between Christian denominations inspire hatred. Don't question the haters among religion, question the religion. ALL religion.
You live in Austin and you've never seen people of different religions get along with each other? There are Christians and Muslims living in peace all over the world, right in my Catholic college there are Muslims and Christians together and nothing ever breaks out between them. Islam and Christianity are not sufficiently different, I just finished a course on these 2 religions.
These people would rather just let the media tell them how Muslims are than just look at the people in their own community. Apparently that includes you. Just because you're an atheist doesn't mean you have to be ignorant about religions.
lookatdoor--Saying that religions have doctrines against mingling with other religions is not any indication that I'm ignorant of religions. It means I've investigated them. Check out the first commandment for clarification.
The Zietgiest is changing everybody, I do believe, the atheist movement is pissing off the xtians,so watch the golden compass and piss off the catholics
I believe our minds are bigger than something that can be put on a business card, used as a letterhead,
OR ORGANIZED to the point of being another divisionary entity. This is a non-comformist
first step to conformity. I'm just scratching the surface here but I'm vehement about this one. There is no logo for the hope of ever-expanding neuro-synaptic awareness to the big picture.
it's not a logo for atheists, dumbass, it's a logo for one particular atheist group, one which is responsible for a great deal of important political activism. If having a logo made you a religon then i'd be a McDonaldist right now.
kewpiesbadhairday--Most logos are secular. I'm sure you can name plenty of secular logos. It's a way of connecting with others of like mind, and it's a way of advertising. This particular symbol is based on science, and the broken band in the middle makes an "A" for Atheism, and reminds us that "not all the answers are in yet." That's just honesty.
"when you have a logo for atheists your turning it into another fucking religion."
Oh, yes... Next well be chanting to it, praying to it, sacrificing unbaptised babies to it, ravaging your virgin daughters on it. When will the madness end?
In "The Rights of Man" Thomas Paine spoke on the mythology of "tolerance" that is worthy of consideration:
"Toleration is not the opposite of intoleration, but it is the counterfeit of it. Both are despotisms. The one assumes to itself the right of withholding liberty of conscience, and the other of granting it. The one is the pope, armed with fire and fagot, and the other is the pope selling or granting indulgences."
Good call, Joe. I was wondering though about this event..wasn't it the Thanksgiving Day lunch that they opened up the church for anyone of any faith to come share with them? If so, it's my understanding that some Muslims wanted to come and then at 3pm or 1pm (whenever their time for prayer is) put down their little prayer rug and start praying to Allah. If that is the case, then I would agree with the church's position.
Something like that would be a spectacle, a disruption, and very tacky. I wouldn't let someone come over to my house while we're supposed to be watching the superbowl and then let him go on praying and wailing to Allah in the corner right in the middle of the game. Someone made a point like this on TXatheist's site, and I have to agree on that one. But good job keeping those fundies on their toes.
how serious a threat do you think the christian dominionists are, ive been reading and watching some vids and its pretty scary to think that hardcore "i want to bring the end of days people" are going to be in control of the worlds largest stockpile of nukes
Just try getting through to Rush Limbaugh or Michael Savage if you disagree with what they have to say and can prove them wrong about anything.
