Are you kidding me? Youtube didn't have advertising before 2006. My old youtube account was from before 06 and I never remember seeing any adverts. So what are you talking about? Look, I understand nothing is free, but Google doesn't need Youtube as an advertising outlet. They have the entire internet. Greed man. You don't have any idea how many billions Google rakes in off of advertising alone do you? But since youtube is so popular they want more and more and it's never enough. Simple as that

I haven't the slightest clue. How does wiki survive? Wiki is not small by any means. Someone must be paying for the maintenance, bandwidth, eh, whatever, it's getting cheaper. Maintenance and manhours I can understand. And if Youtube costs millions of dollars in annual maintenance, and I'm estimating this is only your guess, do you think adverts alone pay for that? If not how else is Youtube being paid for? Some reports would be nice.

I'd post some links if youtube wasn't weird about putting url's into the comments. But just do a simple google search for youtube's financial data. It has been losing hundreds of millions of dollars each year, and even adverts haven't been able to cover the costs, let alone create a profit. Right now youtube is being paid for by Google's deep pockets, had it never been purchased I doubt the original owners would still be able to continue throwing money at it by now.

Wiki survives off of donations, which is possible since they have little bandwidth costs compared to youtube and very few paid employees. And its funny you mention adverts. Even with advertisements, youtube still loses in excess of $100 million every year. If google wasn't paying those costs now out of its deep pockets, then youtube would have been shut down long ago.
