@Purly you can darn in and trim all ends or after darning each end ,work 2 rows of double crochet making extra d.c for curving at corners , or crab stich or the easiest is to do fringes by adding extra lenghts of wool to match with what you are left with from weaving up...hope this can help !..let me know how you are going ....what colour is your blanket?
@Ozgrandmother Thanks for the tips! Now I just gotta figure out what darning is and what crab stitches a (I'm dutch, don't know all english terms yet)
My blanket is going to be white, anise and pistachio, to match my parents' bedroom walls :D
@Purly ~I went to Google Translate and the answer is:maak een zoon ..or: het stoppen.I'm not sure if that helps.I can tell you in French it's:faire un ourlet. For the crab stitch have a look at a video from BerrocoKnitBits called: 'crab stitch"Really you can finish it any way you like.Fringe is the easiest.Or you can with a sawing needle thread each end back unto itself into the first row or two of your blanket. There are no specific rules on how you have to finish it.Your colours are beautiful:)
@Ozgrandmother Thank you <3 Credit for the colors goes to my parents, since they designed their own bedroom :) I just got the measurements for the blanket: 230cm by 215cm. So big @_@ I hope I can do it!
Let me make sure I am understanding this correctly. If I make a blanket that is 200 chains wide, that I must do 200 rows of double crochets? Or can I just get a ruler and measure to see if my length matches my width?
@fiercenfocused ~For the Campbell of Loudoun, for example, you need to do 236 chains.Your first row of double crochet will be creating 116 spaces or holes and following the colour chart, you will end up having crocheted 116 rows up. For all tartan, the number of rows up is dictated by the number of rows of colour , from the colour chart .
To complete this blanket, you have to do the same thing vertically as you have done horizontally. Does that mean that my afghan has to be the same length and width? In other words? Do you have to make a perfect square?

@fiercenfocused ~ yes ,it will be square, some tartan are bigger than others. For exemple, some are 246 chain long & wide, some 230 chain L x W ect..depending on the tartan ...But yes, basicaly it will be square, unless you want to add a few more row. I suppose it can be done. The mc Donald of Kingsburgh is a nice size blanket. Were you thinking of doing a bed cover maybe? Then you have to add more row , following the colour menu, and then your vertical chains will need to be the lenght of the blanket
Yes I have started my blanket. It won't be so 'traditional' in color as I like vibrant colors (which I hope it doesn't interfere with it being called tartan plaid) but it will be inspired by such. Thanks for answering my questions.
@fiercenfocused ~Any colour will do ,you know..just fallow the 'menu' but choose the colour you like...it still is a tartan, but a modern one, your own personal customize one... :) ..ask what colour people in your family like, and use that...it would be very special, a tartan for your family only :) ...just an idea... have fun !
Hi @fiercenfocused ~ I hemmed mine. I folded the end of the blanket making sure the bits of wools, the ends of the chains, were tucked in...i don't like fringe much either. If you want to crochet a border , you can too.Just tucked in the ends of chains as you crochet the border.....did you start the blanket as yet ?
Amazing! I'm in the U.S. and it's after 9 o'clock.
In one of your other videos, you mention videos or patterns for Campbell of Loudoun that uses 5 colors. Do you have a pattern? I'm interested in seeing the color arrangement.
say fiercedenfocus, where are you in the US ? isn't it night time there ? I'm in victoria, Australia and it's 20 minutes past eleven in the morning.. nearly lunch time !
yes fiercedenfocused, i did double crochet because i crochet loose and the wool tend to stretch after a few years of use & washing..on my last comment , i don't know where the # 39 come from....ignore that bit!...but video pattern #1 , is the one for this blanket. This tartan is named : MacDonald of Kingsburgh
Hi fiercenfocused~ have a look at my other video called : how to crochet a tartan blanket :Treble Stitch...all it is, is one chain between each Treble or double stitch you do. I 'm a loose worker so i crochet what i call a double stitch...if you crochet tight , you can do trebles...and in between each of them you crochet one chain ..the space in between stitches is one chain. In my video 'how to crochet a tatrtan blanket-pattern #1' you can see the instruction for this blanket. Hope this help :)
@noreen1ful ~ Thank you Noreen1ful !..I will make a new video with the'pattern' for it...It is done with 8ply wool, 4x 100gr balls RED, 4 balls BOTTLE GREEN ,1 ball YELLOW,1 ball WHITE (I used black instead of white on this blanket) ..i'll explain the rest on my next video. :)
I was thinking, maybe youd like to have fringes. When you have threaded the ends of each chains with your crochet or needle(if you prefer to saw them in), cut a piece of cardboard the lengh you want your fringes to be,10 cm or 12 cm wide and wind the wool around. Then cut to one side. That will give you same size fringes. Take 3 or 4 and loop them thru the blanket end, where the chains end were.Make a knot and that's it ! Hope this help :)
I have posted a new video .Look for "tartan blanket #2 and other projects" ...unfortunatly Youtube wont let me change the thumbnail photo, so look for a "baby blue blanket"...
Thank you StichingWithLove for your nice comment ! To secure the ends, you can simply make knots or what i did ,crocheting each end of wool thru the end of the blanket before making a hem....Kind regards....Ozgrandmother
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the technique. Wonderfully helpful video. I'm still unsure of how to secure the ends of the chains though.
How do you finish off your blanket? After weaving in the chains you'll be left with a lot of loose strings. What do you do with it?

Do you do a border or trim around the afghan versus having fringe at the ends? I'm not a big fan of fringe. Any suggestions?
