  • Oh yeah! Sang it!

  • A true musical genius and an inspirational force for the movement. No need trying to compare this brother to any one, with vocal skills that will move any set of eyes to tears BROTHER HATHAWAY stands alone. PEACE AND LOVE, RIGHT ON RIGHT ON.

  • Simply an amazing talent

  • I LOVE THIS ... #GG<3

  • I yearn for songs like this - soulful, positive and masterfully sung. No one does it better than Donny.

  • I just came across this song from Donny's album, I always used to skip it ...and now I love it to pieces!

  • A singers singer

  • :,-)

    My people!

    My people!

    My beautiful people :'-)

  • ......Donny Hathaway , ladies and gentlemen, Donny Hathaway!!!!!!!

  • Listen how the people were so Excited about this song "Young Gifted and Black"back then black people had so much Black Pride What Happened?

  • MisterCrazylegs.....YOU ARE EXACTLY RIGHT....NO ONE CAN HOLD A CANDLE TO THIS GUY...BOY IF WERE STILL AROUND..IMAGINE-THE MUSIC WE WOULD HAVE ENCOUNTERED....

  • I STILL LOVE THIS SONG. LORD HAVE MERCY PLEASE

  • i miss donny hathaway

  • Donny had the greatest voice we ever heard, and he inspired our people with his lyrics to uplift, stand up and be strong at a time when things were hard.To Donny

Hathaway, a man that made our struggle easier with his wonderful voice.

  • Poor Donnie, gone too soon, we much miss-ya!

  • does anybody know where I can find the original version of this song off the "everything is everything" album?

  • @jasoneducator You can get the CD from Amazon.com

  • gifted

  • I work for a charter school, and this song inspires me to do more and work harder for the children

  • this was my elementary school's graduation theme song over 40 years ago, and it is still so true today. Every student should march on into the future to this song. We thought we would change the world, inspired by Mr. Hathaway.

  • Song is Krazyy.. why didnt i hear about this before...wooowz!

  • @MisterCrazyLegs: I agree he is the greatest male vocalist of all times....but Aretha and him are both equally as good....in my humble opinion. The two of them are the two most blessed singers of all times as far as i am concerned. Both of them have a soulfulness that is unmatched til this very day.

  • No better voice has sun an R & B song.

  • Thank you Lord for making me young, gifted and black...its definitely where its at

  • i find it interesting that NatTurnerIsAlive says that about paranoid schizophrenia... i'm not saying he's right, becuz i have no proof. however, my grandma does suffer from paranoid schizophrenia, and by dissecting her life, i can see how living in Apartheid-era South Africa may have contributed to why she is the way she is today. Dont get it twisted tho, im not saying thats the only factor causing her condition...

  • No single voice on the planet sounds better than this one.

  • @DeckardWill very well said..nobody can touch this man......

  • @NatTurnerIsAlive As for slavery creating schizophrenia etc. Have you ever found evidence? at all??

How can you even make a claim like this?

It is the problem with releasing any information with a race tag attached to it, as it will always be seen as being racist. Aarathi Prasad talks about this in a Channel 4 documentary called "Is It Better To Be Mixed Race?"

This is my first time listening to Donny Hathaway, and it's beautiful, I just hate looking at the constant racism on YouTube.

  • @cormacmccoy Why are listening to young gifted and black! Wow do really wont have this conversation about racist on youtube? Racism by-product of white people insecurities. Do not preach to blacks about racism because their racism comes from totally different place (context)...A context of frustration which comes out being psychology attack and at times physical attack by power structure (caste system) which attempts to keep them on level minimal social level. Watch black in America!

  • @themayorofchicago telling me in the first place that I can't listen to a song called young, gifted and black because I'm white, is racism. Racism is a bad thing. I didn't do that shit to you. Quite simple. If you give racism power now, then it'll never go away.

  • @cormacmccoy It's not about giving power racism when very alive and well and your your people on main end of receiving it. It's not racist to say not to comment on people who existence you could never understand. You preaching to wrong people. It doesn't matter what say about you or your existence...Dude talk about some racism that matters about kind that effects lively hood and pursuit of happiness this racist which needs to be stopped. So want us to turn the other cheek while get slap correct?

  • @themayorofchicago Explain to me why you think one form of racism is ok and another is not? It's pretty evident that no matter what i say you will never agree with me, but the simple thing is. Watch the video Morgan freeman on Racism and you might see what I mean.

  • I hate to break it to you @captainterrible525 but one of those businesses that Ludacris owns is a record company. A record company that funds his music, he dresses that way and acts that way because he wants to be that way, it may seem like coonery to you but maybe it becomes a case of art imitating life. @Hannibalcasanova I hope for your sons sake that when he grows up he has the sense not to listen to that kind of influence, but with you as a parent i'm sure he has a chance.

  • There is NOT ONE singer out here, woman or man, who can hoid a candle to this man...he's in a catagory all his own.

  • @MisterCrazyLegs SAY THAT!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @icecoldbruh - Except for his daughter Lalah. She has this same strong, powerful, soulful, beautiful voice. She carries on well in her father's name.

  • @MisterCrazyLegs I AGREE, BUT ERIC BENET IS AS AWESOME A SINGER AS ANYONE PAST OR PRESENT! AND IM A DONNY HATHAWAY FAN THRU AND THRU!

  • @MisterCrazyLegs 3 word, Karen Clark Sheard

  • @MisterCrazyLegs He's great, but I disagree. I perfer Marvin Gaye.

  • @KrfNYC2 both are great, but donny was in a class of his own.....Sorry.....

  • @Nerdbama Both are great, but Marvin was in a class of his own...Sorry...

  • @KrfNYC2 both are great, but donny was in a class of his own...Sorry....

  • @Nerdbama For real though...Marvin.

  • @KrfNYC2 lol..naw..Donny for me and marvin for you....They still are both great men and artist...Donny was just more soulful IMO.......

  • @Nerdbama Agree to disagree.

  • @MisterCrazyLegs And let the people say, "Amen."

  • @MisterCrazyLegs My sentiments exactly. Nor will there ever be. There is only one! Say that!!!!!!! Can we get an amen and a Donny Hathaway day, please! For us folks who really know him. His soul was deep, deeper than many can even relate or can go.

  • @MisterCrazyLegs Agreed..........seriously....

  • @MisterCrazyLegs

Hands down. This brother sings circles around Stevie Wonder- on any given Sunday.

  • @marianance no need for a competition....Stevie enjoys everyone, love's in need today.....stop the negativity

  • @marianance Stevie loved Donny & vise versa...no need for the competition..that's what's wrong with black people today...all of this competition & negativity...remember the stupid east coast/west coast rivalries????

  • @MisterCrazyLegs YAAAS!

  • @MisterCrazyLegs there's a handful (Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding to name a few) but the list definitely is NOT long. He is indeed amazing

  • Great choice of song to post. Donny Hathaway was a light.

  • @NatTurnerIsAlive F U! That's exactly why we are still stuck in si many ways. How dare you. Take responsibility. Clearly you are not hearing this songs empowering message. You are a coward hiding behind your computer blaming and, making excuses. Why don't you talk about the solution instead of promoting racism.

  • @NatTurnerIsAlive a mother's nurturing is necessary, but a father's example is what too many aren't getting. They have their mother's nurturing them into being less than they are capable of by babying them (and then setting them loose on some unsuspecting woman). Let them know they are capable. Children live up (or down) to their expectations.

  • @NatTurnerIsAlive

Donnie Hathaway was paranoid schizophrenic. Suicide is the leading cause of death for folks diagnosed with it. Donnie was an extraordinary vocalist, musician, composer and man. I miss him terribly. Thankfully his gift lives on in his daughters Leilah and Kenya.

  • Amazing song. It gives me goosebumps everytime I hear this live version.

  • " WHAT A LOVELY PRECIOUS THING " . PLEASE TELL YOUR CHILDREN ON A DAILY BASIS THAT THEY ARE SPECIAL., DESPITE WHAT THE WHITE SOCIETY TELLS THEM.

  • @alexalot23

It's not what white society says that concerns me. It's what black society tells my son that concerns me. Black men calling themselves Pimps, the tendency to put rappers who call women female dogs, and garden tools on a pedestal. And almost none of them can carry a tune in a bucket, nor play an instrument. The percentage of school drop-out rates among young black people. What does white society have to do with that?

  • @hannibalcasanova The record companies make billions from those images they pay the "artists" millions to crank out. Just make sure your son knows & sees good examples too. He should be reading black enterprise. I had a BIOLOGY teacher that got upset w/ our class because someone called Malcolm X a civil rights leader. He made us write a paper on him & thus began my love affair with black history & black achievement. BTW Ludacris has 10+ businesses. your son should know that too.

  • @captainterrible525 What are you talking about? What images? My son is 5 years old and reads Dr. Seuss

  • @hannibalcasanova I wasn't talking about your son, I was responding to your list of the ills that are plaguing black culture and you posted "What does white society have to do with that?" I was saying that they have a hand in promoting the most negative aspects of black society. But of course the responsibility lies on the people who allow themselves to be part of the "coonery". I didn't know your son is 5, as he grows he'll be around kids whose parents aren't as careful.

  • You can't get too much better than this!!! This song has my spirit full!!! LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN! Know YOUR WORTH BLACK CHILDREN!! Be Blessed...

  • big tune fir fire fire!!! WHAT A PERFORMANCE!!

  • big tune fir fire fire!!!

  • Young people need to really listen and get the message. Our youth are lost and they are not aware that they are kings and queens. Study your history.

  • God iz Good...ThisWas a Talented Brother..He Gave a lot of the "Iconic singers" a new style of snging..example...(Stevie)

  • Here I am, 2:51 AM, Thanksgiving Day morning, 2010..........discovering SOMETHING ELSE to be thankful for: an absolutely fantastic performance by the late Donny Hathaway that I was previously unaware of its existence. A tremendous talent like Donny's is truly ETERNAL..........it's to be admired, appreciated & RESPECTED for an entire lifetime. God bless his memory.

  • So Much Talent... I swear there is so much soul and power in his voice! I've never heard anyone sing with such joy and pain as he did! Thx for Blessing me Bro. Hathaway!

  • I miss Donny like they say they serve no wine before its time it just ages well in time RIP DONNY

  • between this and "lift every voice" by chip days (look it up) you can't help but hold your head high

  • This song is the embodiment of progression, not only as an individual with a Black ancestry but anyone who takes pride in their culture. When the melody comes through and his passion echoes, you can't help but be drawn in and feel touched. This song should be played at least once a month for the youth. "Cause you know...in this whole wide world, whole wide world. There's a million...a million boys and girls. Who are young, gifted and black."

How can one lose hope when he hasn't?

  • I love how he takes us to church at the end. I felt it!

  • I HAD A CHOICE BETWEEN A BRAND NEW BABY ALIVE DOLL OR THIS CASSETTE MY MOM ONLY HAD ENOUGH MONEY FOR ONE GUEST WHICH ONE I CHOOSE KEEPIN MINE I WAS 10 YEARS OLD THANKS TO THE HATAWAY FAMILY FOR SHARING YOUR MOST PRECIOUS GIFT WITH THE WORLD AND TO THE MAN WHO SHARED HIS INNER MOST THOUGHTS WITH US YOU ARE TRULY MISSED YOUR VOICE REMINDS ME OF WHAT THE ARCH ANGEL GABRIAL VOICE WOULD SOUND LIKE SOMEONE MOST HAVE WANTED TO HEAR YOUR VOICE A LITLE MORE CLEARER SO HE CALLED YOU NEARER

  • quelle voix d'ange !! Mister Donny.. i'm 38 years old and I was too young in this period for learning this music but now I appreciate ! soul is one of my motivation everyday I appreciate..Donny as Mavin or Otis are in my spirit forever ..

  • I love Donnie .. I just turned 31 and i got a overwhelming need to listen to this kind of music last year... im growing wiser and so is my music taste.. thanks for posting this .. im glad im not the only one listening to him!!

  • one of the top two greatest singers of all time, in my book. hands down! plus this is live! let neyo or trey songs try to top this. it will not happen. what happened to good and distinguished and spirit moving music?

  • Just beautiful wonder if this would make BET today?

  • @100denmarkhill Sad to say that there would not be a chance in the world of this making BET today! Because it does not talk about women in a degrading way talk about people being half naked or talk about how much money and fancy cars someone has Because I would much rather here real music like this instead of the garbage that is doing nothing but keeping our society stagnet instead of educating and uplifting the people in our communities. Such a shame because Donnie's message is so needed today

  • @100denmarkhill hell na des wouldn c bet wrong age group of people but it would b on vh1 soul. u should check it out

  • i am lookin for this record..."HELP!!!!" somebody please...

  • @cottonpx It's on amazon.com

  • Young and bleased. Black and Blank. I thank you for your songs, Donny.

    Roy

  • That audience went on in to GLORY on this song. Sang Donny. He let them HAVE IT!!!! Thank you Lord, Thank ya!!!!

  • this is dedicated to whom? I missed that.

  • @crushsatan ...to whom it may concern

  • Thanks for adding this!!! This is a very beautifully Sang Song!!!! No one does this song like Donny!

  • Infamous!!!!!!

  • Gone much too soon was this genius!! Simply put THE BEST SINGER IN HISTORY!

  • Bittersweet. Donny was yet another "young, gifted, & black" inspiration who was taken from us in our youth. These deaths all made their mark on our hearts. This song was 1st sung by Nina Simone. Written in memory of Simone's friend Lorraine Hansberry - "Raisin in the Sun". Lyrics by Weldon Irvine. It became a Civil Rights anthem. Covered by Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin, and Bob & Marcia (#5 in UK charts). Lyrics: poemhunter[dot]com/song/to-be-young-gifted-black/

  • this is exactly what i am Im going to finish college and live up to it

  • @ThickGurlMoney305 I thank you for carrying on the legacy of a true soldier girl!

  • @frenchmary sure thing

  • SING DONNIE BIG TUNE!!!!!!!

  • wish we took being YG&B today as seriously as we did then

  • I love this song it make me cry because my grandmother used to always play it for me when i was little but dis song is the TRUTH

  • I am young, gifted and white !

Oh wait... nah, it's the same !! :)

  • @TheMektoub It's different. If you're young, gifted and black, you're probably the biggest prize in every black community. Non-stereotypical, goal-driven, filled with knowledge and common sense. It's a weapon when you think about it.

  • @DetoxNow True !

  • Frank mcComb sounds a bit like Donny And he is another amazing vocalist. Love this song

  • SinSeared, U funny, but did U have 2 go there?. This song is a serious joint as U can tell from the rest of the comments, which made me a little sad because they reflex on our plight as a people, if U know what I mean. Then I saw your comment & I couldn't help but laugh; May Jehovah forgive us both.

  • This song speaks to black people that go unrecognized because the system of America only uses the minorities' gift to make the entertainment industries more money so therefore they do not recognize it is a pure talent from God. The gift of singing like Donny is worth more than money but he shows the world through this album that there are a million of young men and women that they could do something to make it in this world and to express their gifts like they should.

  • we werent once Kings & Queens...we WERE Gods & Goddesses....REMEMBER!!!

  • I am also young gifted and black.....and he was sho' takin' it to church!

  • Takes me back to 6th grade Ms Strickland/Ms Music we called her she always reminded us that what we were.

  • CHECK IT OUT

  • This song is soooo beautifull

I almost forget to breathe !!!

  • us blk youths just need more fighting spirit, like those during the segregation yrs fought to desegregate and bring in the civil rights, they just need to understand that yes things aint gonna be easy to go from ghetto to successfulness, but its all about having that will to get yourself out of there, instead of just being another stuck in the system

  • @Adjei88 U R sooo right & they have more than we ever had, we did not see as many black images on Tv, & to have a black Prez should make us all stand up & take note, we have always had the gift of words, as those of the past Fredrick Douglass etc, we should put them to good use for not just blk youth but all youth. We know what we can achieve as a people, we need to get it 2gether/stay 2gether stop the violence agnst each other/ & others. Use the talent we were givn 4 good.

  • Our black youths need some uplifting. Drugs, poverty and the lack of self is destroying our kids.

  • To Have lived my life as a Young Black Woman, I know I was Blessed, to be able to hear for my self the talents of such Wonderful Entertainers Like Donny Hathaway, Makes you want to cry sometimes, Good and Pure Raw Talent gone so soon, too soon.. • I'AM YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK

  • @sntjhnsn you certainly are. continue to believe in yourself.

  • And after everything is said and done after people finish talking you have to believe in your self. This is my synopsis of the truth will set you free.

  • Just fantastic! He really puts it all over Church, Jazz, Soul and so much emotion. He had it all! A genius - he keeps you striving and reaching with that voice!

  • WOW.....

  • To sing with so much passion & feeling...there will never be another who could match the soul this brother expressed through his music & voice...Such raw emotion.....

  • singers nowadays never sound this awesome live

this man was a vocal genius... WOW.. AMAZING

  • that BROTHA was truely blessed

  • It still gives me chills to hear this amazing man sing from the heart. There is imitators but there will never be another. Pure and raw. Simply beautiful!

  • donny's version is the best i've heard. aretha has a nice version also, but donny's power and feeling comes through big time. rip my brother.

  • Mr. Hathaway is reminding us of not only ourselves but to be conscious of our children as an extension of beauty that must be prepared for and protected. Thank you Donny!

  • @bigamble WELL PUT...BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • @bigamble WELL PUT...BEAUTIFUL!!! AND I SEE SOMEONE ACKNOWLEGDED JESUS @0:46-0:47. GOOD STUFF.

  • One of my all-time favorite Singer/Pianists.

From the "Black History Month" playlist - Enjoy!

Jonathan, with "Give God the Glory!" TV

  • MY CONSUMATE INSPIRATION

  • rip piece you beatiful black man.

  • Know matter where we go, if something is worth learning, we learn it. Donnie Hathaway was worth learning about. Although, it wasn't until 1982 that I really became aware of him. Unfortunately he was then dead. As for myself, I was in Berlin, Germany, with the U.S. military. &, it was through a German girl friend whom I then had, that I learned of Donnie Hathaway. She had a painted picture of him on her wall. Ignorance was bliss. Knowledge of him cause me grief. With knowledge comes sorrows.

  • happy early MLK day!

  • voice is awesome!

  • One of the best male singers in America.

  • Sang Donny! SANG DAMNIT!!!!!

  • On the other hand Bob & Marcia are still around.

  • Beta Chapter in The House!!!!

  • RIP to the one of the coldest, oldest, and boldest in soul...

Thank you bruh for always bringing your uncompromising soul to your recordings so that we could marvel in your works years later...

    06....(i c u redfanon...lol)

  • I AM YOUNG GIFTED AND BLACK!

  • that's absolutely right baby!!!

  • @Cyrious

He was a Genius. But I'm old and white.

    And not so gifted...

  • @RedsInTheBed lol...ok you are young in spirit...I am for sur e you are GIFTED in some area...and you do have GREAT taste in music ;0)

  • @Cyrious

Hehe... Thx for that. I'm gifted enuf to survive as a professional (white) musician. But I really miss the brilliance of a Donny Hathaway or a Stevie Wonder. Where is the new talent? Maybe we can blame record companies... internet downloads or horrible TV talent shows.

I will NEVER forget the first time I heard "Superstition". My jaw hit the floor and my feet couldn't stop moving. Shame I don't here such extraordinary innovation anymore.

  • Piano and Singing Lesson 1 by Donny :-)

  • I wish I was old enought to have seen this man live. i love hearing the audidence being uplifted from the song. It's like a church experience.

  • Donny you were on of the greatest singers/keyboard players of all time. Often imitated, NEVER duplicated.

  • Love his voice, and very inspirational lyrics!

  • I was watching a show about him. they said that he had paranoia and sczophrenia..sorry if i didnt spell it right. he always thought that white ppl were reading his mind and taking his music...thats wild but definitely a talent gone too soon.

  • Damn Donny Is The Man. Died 2 Soon

  • that man can sang his butt off..you don't come across too many male singers that sings like he does...

  • i getting ready to tell a story, the school board wanted to close down the school that we were attending, we had a teacher, Crystal Jackson, that made us proud, and represent, the smallest of all choirs, this is one of the songs that we learned and relized, I am more than blessed just to get thus far!!!!!

  • i wish i was there! so much soul, pride and love!

For one moment, you believe that his voice and that old fender rhodes, can change the world!!!!

  • YOUNG,GIFTED, AND BLACK!!! Is this a reality like the panthers for youngsters or has the older generations failed by selling us out thus leaving little black children to be victims of the system. YOUNG, GIFTED, AND BLACK!!!! Is this a reality? I ASK U?

  • Thats a very good question yo. I think it's the children (us) who'v failed- in a sense; to do our research and find the truth about who and what we are.

Enough of this inspirational stuff exists (though not much in our current styles of music like back then) to say that yes, this is a true reality. The question is... Is this reality your reality?

  • YHWH, "my people perish for a LACK of knowledge"

    We are the CHOSEN!

    We are the HEBREWS!

RESEARCH the "BOOK OF JUBILEE" (the book they (Christians) took out that tells us who we are)

  • I couldn't have put it better myself Kissis. Thanks.

See, knowledge is supposed to be given out freely among people. Not hoarded and obfuscated for the well being of the few who reign as world powers- The Vatican, The Illuminati, The Bushes...Etc.

Back then it was (and probably still is) dangerous to know the truth because you had action behind that knowledge, like the Black Panthers, MLK, Tupac, etc.

We all know how Donny Hathaway died. Do you know how where you are going after you die?

  • haleluyah ! I praise YHWH for waking me up to the truth, so that I can raise my babies in truth. I'm thankful I'm not among the walking dead anymore

  • I agree!!!

  • donny is the man

  • The gospel chords are obvious, but the time signature is jazzy, and what do you think it is, its not 4/4..

  • It sounds like 3/4

  • or maybe 9/8

  • Comment removed

  • To be young, gifted, and black

Oh what a lovely precious dream

To be young, gifted, and black

Open your heart to what i mean, to what i mean

  • Cause you know

    In the whole wide world

There's a million, a million boys and girls

Who are young, gifted, gifted, and black...and its sho'nuff where its at

To be young, gifted, and black

We must begin to tell our young

That there's a whole world, a whole world waiting for you

  • Haven't you heard the quest has just begun

Don't you know the joy, the joy, the joy of the today

Is the day that we all.....that we all be proud to say

That we are young..., gifted..., gifted and black.. and its sho'nuff where its at

    "

  • hes so amazing i love him

  • Long story short, 5yrs ago, i was in N.Y. and i was on the subway, heard this man singing donnie hathaway underground. Who is Donnie Hathaway? This man, made me go out and buy every single album Mr. Hathaway ever released. This man in N.Y. had the greatest vocals I had ever heard. He did a great Job! I thank him til this day for introducing me to such a beautiful voice.....
