  • what a bunch of random shit

  • Oh my dear, the colors are over-whelming while listening to this.

  • no its all wrong for me guitar strings are always brown to yellow depending on how high the note is, allthough high electric guitar sounds are red or purple and look like... I dont know, I suppose they look like sound. Cant really explain it.

  • lol ! clean guitar sounds yellow to brown (a little bit orange sometimes) depending how high the note is for me too^^ it depends of wich pickup I'm using too. With distortion neck pickup sounds light blue to me, and bridge pickup sounds more red too !^^

  • That's interesting, for me the guitar is ranging between yellow to orange normally, really sturdy hard rock guitars can be brown and gravel-like.

  • ow this hurts my colors.... wtf?????

  • Hehe. It happens when two don't share the same connections.

  • yeah, but its so weird! lol i hate it when people do these vids... haha. i guess its good for people without it, cuz this is pretty accurate as to how i see things in my head, just the wrong shapes and colors, but its still the general idea...

  • Yeah. Sadly, nothing is like actually having it. Those poor, unfortunate souls.

  • i cannot even fathom how different it must be to not have it! lol it would suck. like, a lot.

  • or at least, the begining makes sense. i taste the songs more often than see them tho

  • For me... it's like I see sound. I see the vibrations but different. It's hard to explain. The lower the note, the arker, the higher, the brighter. Bass is clearer, and treble like...overlaps... lol

  • I don;t like this! The musics too jumpy and their colours were way out from mine! Its unsettling, i hate the music!!! When i hear music, theres always a picture in the background and it changes, but its faded and fuzzy. Then theres the colors, major keys and minor keys always have different colours to me. Major normally warm, Minor cold. I also see lines, and they depend on the texture of the music. This vid was unsettling though. To jumpy.

  • I suppose this is the only way to convey the audio-color grapheme to non-synesthetes. This video is on the right track I suppose but far from hitting the mark on what audio-color synesthesia "looks like". Despite the known subjectivity of the experience audio-color generally doesn't appear as a collage of video edited dots and pencil sketches. Given our limited technology though this could serve as a very loose approximation of the experience.

  • The colors in this are random. Real synthesthia has a sense of order (e.g. I hear the key of E as pearly white). This is total guess work.

  • it may not be guesswork... i see E as darkish purple... maybe this is how he or she views it.

  • bullshit it is not. i have synesthesia and i just stumbled on this vid. many of these patterns and colors are how i see music as well. expanding a shrinking rows of circles. ruff disegmented patterns. lines of colors with sections of contrasting colors through it. blobs of one color with dots of other color in it. all moving and changing with the music. Its very interesting to me having lived with this my whole life that someone else is forced to see these beautiful things with sounds and music.

  • get rid of this junk

  • This video is such bullshit. It won't tell you anything. Look up synesthesia on wikipedia and check out the test pictures there, like the one with all the black 5s on white with a few reversed as 2s. Someone with this condition _might_ be able to pick the 2s out right away.

This video looks trippy to everyone and has nothing to do with synesthesia.

  • @pacosaidso I agree. The image and the sound don't relate to each other for shit

  • Ok i'm lost, i have read allot of these comments and allot of people are saying my colors or that nothing matches........ooookk? what are you talking about everyone's colors are different i know that but...i don't see how colors are off if your looking at something

  • According to Richard Cytowic (leading authority on Synesthesia), the multisensory information being transmitted neurally, is experienced subjectively. I am certain that if you have synesthesia, and a work of art doesn't add up to your personal experience, it could be quite maddening. These same impulses (or similar levels of dissatisfaction) drove Kandinsky and Schoenberg (and many others) to produce the kind of artwork they did.

  • well you see like i have synesthesia and when you hear a sound or something you see or think or a color and nobody is the same and this video is kinda like what some people think of but its not at all like me but look up synesthesia on google you'll learn more and it will be clearer for you. also it will be clearer if you look up "synesthesia pictures" or something. i hope that i helped:)

  • If your watching this video , and your a synesthete , and you say that the colours arent right...

i dont get it ,do you see the colours over these colours? or do you see your colours to the side of these ones , or do you just know that the colours arent right?

  • this is soo cool. My colors are way different though.

  • not accurate

  • Haha, doesn't match at all, I get a kick out of this stuff. :)

  • I prefer pink floyd or radiohead.

  • I agree with venomsmistress, the sounds at the beginning made me want to scream!

And I know everyone's colors are different, but this bothers me that it doesn't match my colors. Haha.

  • Ahhhh!!! It burns!!!!

So off from mine. I hate the sounds in the beginning. My colors are going insane...... ):

  • For me, these shapes and designs are similar, but the colors are completely off!

  • omg! this video bugs me cause none of this stuff matchs my colors!!!!! agh!!!! lol

  • i see music as fractal art, like skyscrapers of it, like growing architecture. is that synesthesia?

  • It's possible. What might make it synesthesia could be if you had no control over seeing those things. It would probably happen with different kinds of sounds as well, if your's happens from sound stimuli. The best reference would be Dr. Richard Cytowic, Neurologist. I'm not a Neurologist.

  • thanks.

  • No Problem. His book, The Man Who Tasted Shapes, influenced my work greatly. I read it in the 90's.

  • I am a color/shape-music synesthete and these guys have hit it spot on. Good job. music gets addicting when you get to see all the colors. I never turn my radio off in my room.

  • i have number form and i think it makes adding harder for me

  • me too, i agree

  • My synesthesia is a bit mild. I can pick out colors for every individual letter, but I don't actually 'see' them. I just associate them to colors in my mind's eye. Another thing I've noticed is that more "circular" letters/numbers are lighter colors. Such as C, Q, O, 3, and 8, which are all yellows, peaches, and light oranges.

Does that ring true for anyone else (the letter shape playing a role in its color)?

  • that rings true with me! =)

  • @tsheidi Hey, I'm like you - I associate colors with letter and numbers but instead of similar shapes having similar colors, multiples of numbers have the same colors for me. So like 3 to me is a medium green, 6 is a light green and 9 is a dark green.

  • @Thoughtful16 That must help with math! My 3, 6, and 9 are yellow-orange, orange, and brown, respectively. While they're not as close as yours, those colors are still similar. I wonder if there is some kind of pattern there among synesthetes, like vowels commonly being the brightest/most saturated colors :)

  • @tsheidi Haha it sort of does...I mean it helps me remember the formulas I have to use in math xD Hm idk, I honestly don't know any other synesthetes so I haven't been able to catch a pattern lol Hm well my vowels aren't all bright..my As, Is, Os and Ys are all bright but my Es are black and Us are...uh a greyish bluey green color lol

  • 3(red)+6(yellow)=9(orange)

Unfortunately, 5 is blue and 4 is green so that doesn't usually work out as nicely. :p

  • hey i dont have synesthesia - is this video like really what it looks like when u hear music? I think that is soo cool!!

  • meh, sort of. this makes too many odd shapes and stuff.

it's more focused than this. but maybe that's because this music is pretty abstract

  • monday - blue

    tuesday - yellow

    wednesday - green

    thursday - orange

    friday - red/navy blue

    saturday - purple

    sunday - grey/white/yellow

  • for me it's

    monday - yellow

    tuesday - blue

    wednesday - red

    thursday - dark green

    friday - dark blue

    saturday - red

    sunday - dark red

  • i have synesthesia too and your colors are so wrong for me lol mine are:

    Monday - White

    Tuesday - Light Brown

    Wednesday - Yellow

    Thursday - Dark Brown

    Friday - Red

    Saturday - Dark Blue

    Sunday - Light Blue

  • wrong!

    monday - yellow

    tuesday - black

    wednesday - red

    thursday - dark green

    friday - purple

    saturday - light blue

    sunday - white.

  • lol, so many people have Synesthesia

and your wednesday and friday bug me a lot!

  • well, for me:

    Monday-bright, grass green

Tuesday-deep sky blue, with lighter patches

    Wendsday- yellow and gray

    Thursday-dark purple with some blue

Friday-bright yellow, with white, blue, and pale green patches

  • January is a light peach pink with grey for the n, february is grey with some lavender, march is dark blue-black (but the ch is peach), April is read and purple, May is Blue-black, june and july are almost the same as january, but with out the grey, August is grey-red, september is yellow (but the b is black), October is Black, November is grey-brown, December is Grey.

    1 is white

    2 is green

    3 is blue

    4 is brown

    5 is grey

    6 is peach pink

    7 is vividly yellow

    8 is purple

    9 is red

  • wow thats is so cool cuz all the ones that start in J are like the same color! same with me, but, january is the most different because its not JU its JA...

  • i read the book A mango shaped space.......and is this really what the girl could see?.......thats crazi....yet i would love to hav that ability

  • Not really. Mia described her synesthesia as strictly colors, and not pictures.

  • i love that book!!!

  • I read that book to, i wish i hade synesthesia

  • january is pink february is light blue march is orange april is light green may is beige june is light purple july is dark purple august is light grey september is brown october is white november is golden december is blue hows that for synesthesia huh?
  • same with me july and june are both the sameish color!

  • monday is blue..tuesday is white wednesday is a brownish bergundy..thursday is black..friday is dark red..saturday is yellow and sunday is light blue...its been like that my whole life..i always thought it was just me never knew ther was an actual name for it

  • I am with you on Saturday and Sunday. The number 7 is always a deep red, without fail.

  • Quick question from a non-synesthesiac: have you noticed similar color/music mappings in others, or are the specific mappings individual? And if you were to rationalize why a certain note or image evokes a certain emotion/color, what would you say?

  • Dr. Richard Cytowic, the leading authority on this subject references occaisions where there are similar "interpretations" among different synesthetes. But he states that usually these "interpretations" are subjective. Different patients have interpreted the same stimuli in different ways.

  • In response to your other question, I would have to say that (with regard to this piece) all the sonic and visual relationships are developed intuitively. Many people who have synesthesia may not "intperpret" the sounds and visuals the same way I did here. For more information, check out Dr. Cytowic's book "The Man Who Tasted Shapes".

  • Thanks! I'll look into that book, I keep hearing people talking about it.

  • Sorry to bring up an old topic, I finished reading the book, and wow...lots of interesting material in there, not even the stuff about synesthesia. Philosophical ramifications of some of his conclusions of the origins of reason are very striking (i.e., reason is derived from emotion).

  • I envy you

  • Hey, I'm a synesthetic and I dont suffer from it...really it doesn't make so much difference, of coures we're different, but that's great sometimes...I fell kind of sorry for those who cant see the color of the music, because it's just beautiful. You should tell your friend to stop feeling sorry for herself and strat enjoying it...

  • What program did you use to make ths?

  • Adobe AfterEffects. It also uses a comination of hand made stop-motion animation and cel-style drawn animation. (via pencil test). There is also a little Flash involved, when it was still the property of Macromedia. Probably MX. There are also some analog video distortions made using a DV camera.

  • It seems like there is at least some degree of intense discourse surrounding synesthesia and folks who have it. There is a great book called "The Man who Tasted Shapes" by Richard Cytowic, a neurologist in Washington DC (or around there at least). He's a great person and he also has a small networking community (online) called synesthesia web ring. cytowic dot net

  • sweet

  • HUMMMMMMMMMM THATS IT !!!!

  • Hahaha, well I have synesthesia. Parts of this vid were pretty spot on, and others were not. For instance, the drums (for me) were an orangey brown color, and the guitar was a wet, bright silver-blue.

Also, pictures do not pop up for me when I hear music. The colors blend and swirl on a black background. But cool stuff man :)

  • HAh I wasn't the only one having problems. Especially since my shapes are mostly angular, it was kind of off on what it looked like... although it's cool, and it tries...

  • Great!! You are opening up a new realm, where visual and sound patterns support each other in a very enjoyable way. Fascinating! We wanna have more of it :-) -- fridemar.

  • something I could eat chicken to

  • PRETTY COOL.....REAL TRIPPIN' SHIT !!!

  • i know you weren't meaning to be rude but my friend has synesthesia and it's not 'cool'. sometimes she wants to kill herself because of how she is so different from others and she feels like she can never fit in....

  • it can be an effect from halucinogenic drugs man

  • Dude, tell her to get real it's not the end of the world. She's different, so what ? Different is cool too

  • man i have synesthesia too and wtf y would u feel that way about it I think its a gift; it helps my music in my band, it provides an extra sensory thing others dont have and its a major positive for me. y dont u tell her to look at it for wat it is and to stop feeling sorry for herself

  • she isn't 'feeling sorry for herself'. it's just that she feels different sometimes, because her parents and her classmates treat her differently.

it's different for other people. not all people think it's a gift, you need to accept that.

  • i still dont get that; she has music-colour right? if so perhaps she should try explaining to people about the way she feels and how these people make her feel by babying her. at least she doesn't have some REALLy bad stuff eh, people would treat her a LOT worse if she was cycloid pshycosis or something like that

  • It is very unlikely that a synesthetic suffers from his/her condition; all I ever read about is just one case. I think your friend suffers a psychic disorder instead of synesthesia (which isn't a disorder). The latter is often experienced as unharmful and even helpful in recognition and memory, and might even improve an experience.

  • omg, shut the fuck up. You`re a moron.

  • this is beautiful
