I once created a golem out of my own left arm using a scroll of golem creation. Also, gods get 'truly happy about your generous gift' If you give them one of their books, you could have gotten in good with Valpurus. Still couldn't pray to him since you wouldn't be declared his champion, but still.
I've noticed you never actually pray to the gods even though you still read their books and make offerings to them. Are there other benefits to keeping them happy besides what they give you during prayers?
I haven't really verified it personally, however, continual praying to the gods does lower their happiness towards you and can eventually make them ignore you for periods of time. So to read their books and make offerings to them raises their happiness and the more happy they are, the better your prayers will be answered should you need them. Despite it all you can still get dud prayer responses. I just forget to pray a lot. :D
Actually, they will like you better if you pray to them and they already like you. What does negatively affect your relationship with them is when you read the books of or pray to gods that differ much in alignment from them. So you are better off praying to a narrow section of the alignment hierarchy, then broaden it when you find altars and gain higher WIS. I usually start with the neutral gods then add seges and gradually become lawful.
