Made the pilgrimage to this giant`s grave last week. Long trip. Autumn wind could have been a wee bit stronger, but the trees had a sway about them. L`s grave surrounded by others, with corny, but heartfelt messages. L`s austere and simple. Wish he was still with us. One of the greats.
We know what juxtaposition means - but it isn't the ungainly, academic language that Larkin would ever use. He's much better than that. And, MintySpunkBubble, Larkin and New Order are a perfect mix: both have that perfect English sensibility, remember Ian Curtis was the main force that started that band.
As well as a dull recitation, Bennett left a bit out: 'Religion used to try, that vast, moth-eaten musical brocade, created to pretend we never die, and specious stuff that says no rational being can fear a thing it cannot feel, not seeing that this is what we fear, no sight...'
There is a recording of Larkin doing some North Ship poems, on a news article here on youtube. I'd love to hear him do Aubade. Courtenay's rendition is good, but the poem is an angry one, and should be done in an aggressive style. If I get up the courage I might even do it! Thanks for posting these BTW.
Clever use of song with this. The steady, soaring synth and drums really meld well with the voiceover. "Sound formed in a vacuum may seem a waste of time" indeed.

"Juxtaposition"? What's he rattling on about? Great stuff, love the New Order music. Take it easy.

Hmmm, ok, just for litte old you...
Juxtaposition
"Main Entry: jux·ta·po·si·tion
Pronunciation: "j&k-st&-p&-'zi-sh&n
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin juxta near + English position -- more at JOUST
: the act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side; also : the state of being so placed."
Alan Bennett and New Order aren't exactly two things you'd think of going well together are they?

I thought this was a good juxtaposition of stuff. Thanks.

Anybody got Larkin doing it? I have Tom Courtenay on another page.

Bennett didnt leave this out - its in his original recording
Also the timing of his sentences has been pratted with here and ruins his version of it

Well spoken.

I agree with gingaz13. It's tantamount to hubris trying to soundtrack a poem as brilliant as this, anyway.

Gotta love the Larkin.

I think that's a fair comment.

Um...enough to have Bennett and Larkin as a double act. New Order besmirch it with their tinkly bontempi. Liked the window at the start.
