  • The book my ex has of Tommy's early life going into the business as a rock 'n' roll singer was called, 'The Tommy Steele Story' which I assume they made into the film of same name.

He might not have come back into Rock 'n' Roll, but he did go on to be a great all-round family entertainer - and - he does come from Bermondsey!

Don't remember 'Bermondsey Boy' but maybe he brought that out in later years, as of course, the other one was brought out in the 50s presumably.

  • Hi Mum60, The Book Bermmondsey Boy came out in 2007.

I still think this is one of Tommy's best songs.

  • @Mum60 Yes, the book 'The Tommy Steele Story' was written by Tommy's manager in the late 1950s. :)

  • But like Wee Willie Harris said onstage at Southwark Park this summer, Tommy Steele couldn't wait to get out, and he never came back. I thought it was a bit of a cheek when he called his autobiography "Bermondsey Boy".

  • Wee Willie Harris is till such a big star isn't he!!! Sour grapes from a has been to a much bigger star.

  • @Moonsoon70 Tom was born a Bermondsey boy, and still remembers his roots -hardly a TV interview goes by without him mentioning Bermondsey -and of course he did the TV special about his life in Bermondsey and London. At least Tom still lives in London -Max Bygraves (another Bermondsey boy) lives in Australia!

  • From one bermondsey boy to another Tommy you were and still are great mate ta for the memories mate..

  • bermondsey through and through
