sue looks like jane from Coupling. i think the people who are criticizing this film are focusing too much on details that were relevant when the film was made; obviously some of the ideas about men and women are outdated, it was made in the 1950s! but the overall message is, i think, very pertinent to modern times. people get married for the wrong reasons all the time, and i agree with the minister: similar backgrounds and a solid base in friendship are important aspects of a good marriage.
@LOAblue Yeah. It's not normal for a woman to compete with a man. Astounding what's considered the norm at this time. Here's a clue: no era is completely normal. The 50s, however, are a good demonstration of strong families.
@EvilsOfFeminism No era is completely normal... but not "normal" for a woman to compete with a man? compete with him how? having as much or more education as him?
@LOAblue Educated in what, exactly? Women have always been educated. Men have always been educated. There just wasn't cookie-cutter education before. Such things are only possible in a fluffy, imaginary technological world. Do you even think women would be driving if men hadn't made the automatic starter? The fact is that women and men couldn't be cross-educated, because that's what it really is. Perhaps everyone will get it when civilization collapses again.
I love that being good friends is number 2 on 'Cupid's Checklist', behind having similar backgrounds. It was even funnier that the prospective bride and groom didn't think to point out that maybe that order should be reversed... thanks for the cute and funny short!
The best part of this video is Larry's eagerness to commit. So many guys (and some girls, too) today are like big kids, putting off any major commitment until they're over 30. They just want to party, spend money on going out, play video games, and live selfishly. At least Larry is trying to marry her instead of convince her to give up her virginity to him with no promises on his part.
This was produced way back in 1950, as part of Coronet's "educational" series of "instructional films" for classrooms across the nation- this one aimed at high school students wondering whether to take that "big step in life"....
all she has to say to her parents is ...."if I get married you won't have to pay for 4 years of college (and that useless fine arts degree)
