I forget who said it but it's so true... When a good movie and a popular movie are one in the same, its usually an accident. Most people don't know anything about this movie other than the love story in the foreground... its so full of political and historical metaphors (that were put there for a reason) and all most people care about is the love story. It's rather sad actually
This is a very political pro-entry of the USA into the war scene. The scene is set in December 1941, just prior to Pearl Harbour, and the USA remains at peace. Bogart's line is "I bet they are asleep in New York. I bet they're asleep all over America." And then he slams his fist in frustration. Makes me wonder if as he drowns his sorrows in booze, Japanese planes are at the same time taking off.
Ilsa's re-appearance awakes Bogart's character and mimics the wakeup call for the USA.
@stevo728822 The planes had taken off by the time this movie was made. The writers (the Epstein brothers) did the best that they could to make sense of a war that the U.S. had avoided until Pearl Harbor. The result is masterful and is a great comment on the early WWII years.
yeah this was always my favorite scene. Bogart brilliantly captured heartache in this scene. When he puts his hand over his face always makes me tear a little bit
Haha!
