Im thinking about getting this, is this good for overall van halen tone? i want something that can sound close to the sound he had on the 5150 tour but much cheaper than the real thing. Also is this a good amp overall? Thank you
@5150suckit5150 It can get very similar tones to the 5150, classic and ultra amps but more versatile than a 5150. Need a plexi to nail early vh tones. The JSX is a great amp, i was playing it today after not using it in a long while and forgot how good it is
Hi man. Do you have noise problems with your JSX? I've been haven a buzz from all the channels (of course on the ultra channel the noise is very high, i can not take my hands off the guitar). There is also noise coming from the clean channel. It is really bothering me
Nice demo! I had the head version of this amp and it is amazing. Unfortunately way too much power. If you listen to Joe's interviews that's what it was designed for was touring. I would take this over a Marshall any day! Peavey are the most under appreciated amps out there. Lots of people rip on them but a lot of great artist have them in their back line. You can always get a great deal on one.
what do you think does anyone know a similar type amp to the jvm i have a bugera v22 and a ibanez rg but not doing the van halen type distortion well at all almost no gain got a hot british pedal but too loose no tight distortion i want a jvm style sounding amp for under 700 dollars dont mind if used anyone know some amps is this amp similar to the jvm
can any tell me i know its probly a silly question but i cant find it out any were like in places where its getting sold but dose this amp have a effects loop???
@paulscape72 i have just got a peavey jsx head second hand to day im gessing i could get the same sound out of the head as from the combo could you plese tell wot setting you hav the clean cannle on???
@paulscape72 can u explain how the fx loop with the level knob works or what it does? does it have knobs for both send and return? nice demo btw, im thinking about getting one after seeing this vid
Hey man howzit going, I am running EL34's in the JSX at the moment, my settings on the Ultra channel are Treble 5.5 Mid 7 bass 7.5 gain 4.5 pres 6 Res 7.5 I run a tubscreamer to tighten things up and add some juice. Level 3'oclock tone 0ff - 9'oclock depending on guitar Gain - 0ff - 9'oclock depending on pickups This at the moment is the best metal tone i have got,i prefer EMG's but the EVOs have grown on me lately! i have had the amp 1 year and LOVE it!!! Tone is a never ending Quest eh!!
Thanks for posting this vid, and great playing! Do you have the JSX running through any effects aside from the Wah? Is your JSX stock with EL34 power amp tubes?
Yes it's a stock JSX with the EL34's. Its raw into the amp with the amps reverb up reasonably high. It does take pedals well though and has a good FX loop. You can also hear this amp raw with its own spring reverb on my recent '52 telecaster video. Cheers
Thanks man! I'll check out your Tele vid because I play a '72 Thinline reissue, and I'm curious to know how that will sound with the JSX. Typically I run it through a 212 DeVille.
Great playing! I just got a Peavey JSX and I'm loving it. My only quip is that there seems to be some noise coming through, even on the clean channel (though it's very bearable on clean). I can hear some hum in your video too, but that may just be the mic you used. How do you find the noise level on this combo?
thx, i actually recently got it but it blow out on me :(... The fuse was freaked up and busted but i love the sound of this amp, i just find when i roll back on the presence the sound is a bit to deep for me but with a lot of presence it is to much up in your face and i'm trying to find a balance but so far no luck... thx
My jaw dropped with the MT2 + clean sound! I own a Peavey Ultra Plus 120 head, when I'm looking for the extreme distortion (Chrome style), it comes from the effects on the clean channel :D When it's basic rockin', it's crunch. When it's solo á la Santana or Bevis Frond, then red Ultra.
I'm getting my JSX half-stack this weekend. Can't wait!
I don't understand why people complain about the JSX clean channel. Sure, it doesn't sound like a Fender or Roland Jazz chorus, but it sounds pretty good in its own right (IMO)
are you meaning the MT2? if soyou're right...I dont think I ever used apart from this demo...its another pedal collecting dust. I dont even use any OD's or distortion anymore after buying an Elmwood amp. If you're referring to the JSX and my taste in women you would take the comment back if you saw my wife)
on another note, im looking for an overdrive pedal...for a crunch, mid scooped badass lead sound through a jcm 2000 dsl 50. recommendations dude? i was looking at MXR pedals..
Boss SD-1 or MXR ZW overdrive would be my choices. (I drive my JCM800's input with SD-1 with very little drive set - and I play thrash/death metal). On the other hand JCM2000 has planty of gain - I would try some Eq in fx loop - it makes miracles.
get some equalizer. Ive got MXR 10band KFK and loves it. (NO BOSS GE7) plug as first after preamp. Than shape yr sound as you like. To cut through just put moar mids and less lows. You can try also (instead) put eq before preamp, and get rid of lows, and highs (not all of tham) and boost mids - alone you will sound like shit, but in mix should it sound good, and it cut throught awsomely. keep trying
im lookin for an overall great sounding high gain amp with good clean channel also. lookin into either a mesa stiletto deuce or this amp. any suggestions?
I tried almost every head on the planet and the clean sound of the JSX convinced me immediately. The ultra channel should easily fit your hi gain needs ! ;-)
this demo was just with the video camera's microphones. if you send me your email i'll shoot you an audio demo i did of this amp using some shure 57 mics.
For sure man - its 120 watts. Would sound even fuller through a 4x12. One thing about the JSX is it seems to sound the same at low volumes and high. Other amps I own can be alittle flat at lower volumes but slay at higher volumes. Cheers
Hey Man I just finally got my JSX combo! I am so thrilled... everything seems to work fine with it as well. The sounds that come from this thing are just exquisite! By the way... I see someone else has asked you for the settings you used in this vid.. I'm also a little curious as well. If you wouldn't mind. You might want to just post it in the video description... incase any one else was wondering as well... thanx Paul!
I have the JSX head on a marshall 1936 2x12 cabinet. I'm thinking of getting the combo because of its size, power switch and portability. I've never been thrilled with the open back design on past amps I've owned, ie Marshall. I'm curious if you have an opinion on open back vs closed back cabs. Did that make a difference when you chose this amp?
The open back works great on the combo and with the resonance or putting it against a wall it sounds like a closed back. All my cabinets (2x12 + 4x12) are closed back tho. Only thing about the combo is its heavy so you'll need wheels if you want portability! Cheers
So I bought a Peavey JSX combo yesterday. I have 2 issues with it. 1. It hums. I expect some hum but this is a little much. 2. And most important--- the volume seems VERY LOW for a 120W all tube amp... Any one else have this problem or is just my amp???? I mean at 5-6 volume it sounds very "calm" relative to what you would expect and seems to have used most of its reserves?????? My 50W marshall on 6 would send the police over to the house for disturbing the peace. I do want to like this amp
I only get hum on ultra ch with gain up high & the noise gate down low, otherwise mine would be comparable to other amps of similar gain. Have you checked back of the amp and ensured the selector switch is set to 120w, not 60w? My JSX is pretty loud but marshall's (even 50w) are notoriously loud. My JSX is louder than my 90w elmwood. Also check the FX loop-if you had the FX knobs down and the selector on with the footswitch it might come out low. Otherwise they are certainly loud amps.
I managed to work the issue with loudness out. (playing with knobs) It would have been plenty loud for my use. However, the darn hummmmmmm ( in A ) would not stop??? The funny thing is I really really liked the amp. It's sooo versatile and sounded better than some amps ( Mesa ) costing a $1000 more. I did return it but only because I want to do further reasearch and shopping around. I'm going to sample another JSX, different one from a different store an see if there is any difference. thx
I have the JSX head, since the eq is active, you will get a volume loss if you roll down each eq. you really need each one on 5 or more to not get a cut in volume. I only get hum with one of my guitars. I would say it is the pickup in my guitar. The others are nice and quiet. Perhaps you have a shielding issue. The amp is so high gain, you are going to notice more than on your Marshall
nice chops. Could you play bluesy stuff on this amp as well as metal????? I have a Marshall now, the distortion sound is too dry and I'm looking for a new amp. The Jsx seems like a good amp and alot of amp for the money.
please please email me your settings !! I really like this tone in a combo. I plan on getting a splawn, but for now I need a good combo in the house. Much appreciated bro!! nice playing there I must add. very smooth !
Quite low - the preamp on the crunch and ultra was at about 1 - 1.5 and the master volume about the same (1-1.5) with the clean channel being higher around 2-3. Something like that.
Nah sounds great at volume - you might need to adjust some EQ (reduce mids, treble or presence a bit) though as your ears perceive sound differently at lower volumes and the JSX's EQ is quite responsive (unlike an old marshall for example). At volume you can get that singing feedback like Satch. Cheers
It makes you crave pizza. No seriously it doesn't do a lot but makes the sound wider and somewhat bassier, but Ive found the resonance knob works better for getting a 'BIG' sound.
It was over $1000US but I can't remember how much I paid for it now. Its a great amp, I also own a Marshall plexi and an Elmwood modena90 amp and the JSX is not going anywhere.
Awsome dude! i run a JSX top and a 6505 cab, which is great but when i play the solo stuff its not very "clean" its kinda buzzy fuzzy overdrive. but the sound you have is a lot better, could you share your settings please?
Fairly neutral EQ and pres/res from memory. I do remember when I recorded the clean channel I had its volume up much louder than the other channels and the reverb on quite high too.
Mainly because the JSX is more versatile and can pretty much anything the 6505 can do. I also have a modded plexi marshall for full on authentic VH stuff - it gets that woody tone the Peavey's can't. 6505 are good amps too though.
Actually the clean is quite good for a higain amp. Its not fender tweed but quite lush and clean all the way up to 10. It sounds better loud and on 120w mode. In built reverb helps. It is a little compressed though. I like more open clean sounds but its definately one of the better clean channels for a modern amp. Cheers
what do you mean by 120 watt mode? Is the combo less than 120 watts? If there is some sort of switch, please tell me, because I cant find one on mine lol
WHOA?!?!?!??!? What kinda funky guitar is that??????? its achoustic but must have super low action or somethin, cuz hes shreddin, and it has a humbucker too!?!?!?!??!?!!??!? WEIRD! lol.
It just looks like an acoustic cuz the pickups are colored yellow/black. I had to look twice too at first haha. But it's not a sound hole, just a pickup.
Great vid...great playing. JSX is a little rich for my blood...settled on a Bugera 333xl. It's I guess supposed to be a JSX copy. Have you ever played through a Bugera amp? Have a comment?
Has Peavey ever contacted you? With all of the views of this video, the decent sound quality of the recording, and your skills I'm sure it has inspired MANY ppl to buy a JSX... I bet peavey is grateful...
Think about this... say 3% of viewers decide tobuy this amp because of you... that's over 300 AMPS!! Only 300 or 400 of these amps are probably sold in a year because of the price... amazing what you might have done eh?
You know I wrote to Peavey twice in regard to the JSX and they never even wrote back! I never asked for anything, just some technical advice and complimented their amp. They weren't grateful to me as a customer so I wouldn't expect them to be grateful for helping them sell amps.
And the sad thing is that I can picture the CEO of Peavey, Hartley Peavey, sitting on his pompous ass surfing Youtube for anything that has to with his products... coming across your video and saying "hey this guys is pretty good..." What a jackass... lol!
i'll get a JSx soon what cab do you recommend? perhaps i'll build a custom oversized one, what d you think? what speakers do you think will sound best..? i'll get an axis musicman too..
the diff between the high and low gain inputs is the high gain is for high output pickups such as active or high output passives, and low is for well low output pickups
Sorry dude, its the other way round. The high gain applies higher gain to the input for lower output pickups, and the low gain applies low gain to the input for high output pickups
PhatOnion i recommend trying a Crate Palamino V32 its a sweet at tube amp combo for i think its still 500 bucks check harmony central its the best bang for a buck i have one but its obselete now that i have a Bogner Shiva but i was saving along time for that (2200)
Palomino V Series... Awesome Tone... Depending on the size and wattage.... From 399-999. Check out musicians friend for pricing... guitar center carries most of them. Also check out Peavey's ValveKing series... that is what Joe Satriani based his amp after...
The V series are great amps. I would also recomend looking at the B- 52 AT- 100, or AT- 212. They're incredibly versatile, all tube, and great value at $750 new.
Im thinking about getting this, is this good for overall van halen tone? i want something that can sound close to the sound he had on the 5150 tour but much cheaper than the real thing. Also is this a good amp overall? Thank you

Easy fix, turn down the bass a bit and the treble up a bit.
what guitar you have matters too, as well as the acoustics in the room.
There is plenty of clarity with the combo. This thing is a beast. HUGE sounding combo!

I'll PM you the settings. Splawn's are overated IMO. Try looking at the Elmwood Modena amps. They kick ass but are expensive.
paulscape72 3 years ago
If you could send me the settings you used in this video that would be great. I have the same amp, a Ibanxez S470, and a MXR KFK EQ.
yupkool 3 years ago
PM sent. How do you use the EQ with the JSX? I have a MXR 10 band but never use it much.
paulscape72 3 years ago
what is the mt2 pedal? who makes it?
devilsbow 3 years ago
Its a Boss metal pedal. Its buzzy and fizzy but Ive heard it can be modded for better performance. Not my cup of tea though...I never use it
paulscape72 3 years ago
do you recommend any distortion pedal that was around $100. I think the metal zone is pretty harsh but there aren't a lot of other choices for $100
k1ng92 3 years ago
Maybe Boss OS2? It has both overdrive and distortion. You dont really need a distortion pedal with a JSX though!
paulscape72 3 years ago
OMG why the hell did you turn that shitty MT-2 on? That sounds frickin horrible
HorlicksGuitarist 3 years ago 3
Yeah it sounds pretty bad huh. I wasted some $50 on that POS...
paulscape72 3 years ago
I love your rig... and your shoes!
EPILPROCKER 3 years ago
Thanks man ;)
paulscape72 3 years ago
The Elmwood is a great amp for sure but no I dont think its worth the extra money considering what you get.
paulscape72 3 years ago
how would you compare this amp to your elmwood? worth the xtra money for the m90?
dvlORangl 3 years ago
Please can u tell me what volume you had it on ?? thanks olly
Ollyknkn 3 years ago
Quite low - the preamp on the crunch and ultra was at about 1 - 1.5 and the master volume about the same (1-1.5) with the clean channel being higher around 2-3. Something like that.
paulscape72 3 years ago
Nah sounds great at volume - you might need to adjust some EQ (reduce mids, treble or presence a bit) though as your ears perceive sound differently at lower volumes and the JSX's EQ is quite responsive (unlike an old marshall for example). At volume you can get that singing feedback like Satch. Cheers
paulscape72 3 years ago
Some people have told me the JSX doesnt sound as good at higher volume, which seems backwards seeing as it is a tube amp. Whats your opinion?
beeplord 3 years ago
What exactly does the "fat" switch do?
parkersvx90210 3 years ago
It makes you crave pizza. No seriously it doesn't do a lot but makes the sound wider and somewhat bassier, but Ive found the resonance knob works better for getting a 'BIG' sound.
paulscape72 3 years ago
i own a marshall JCM 900 stack, and i must say, im really impressed with the range of tone this JSX can pull out! how much did you get the amp for?
jwalnut 3 years ago
It was over $1000US but I can't remember how much I paid for it now. Its a great amp, I also own a Marshall plexi and an Elmwood modena90 amp and the JSX is not going anywhere.
paulscape72 3 years ago
I think about $1500 inc int shipping - they go cheap second hand - bargain!
paulscape72 3 years ago
hey man,,,
your soun is really great!!!!

that kramer looks nasty man
Rhoadsy3pro 3 years ago
Very good, you kill! I like the tone.
Soldano88 3 years ago
Awsome dude! i run a JSX top and a 6505 cab, which is great but when i play the solo stuff its not very "clean" its kinda buzzy fuzzy overdrive. but the sound you have is a lot better, could you share your settings please?
PeaveyIsTheShit 3 years ago
Pm'd you the settings...
paulscape72 3 years ago
what are your settings on your clean channell? it sounded great, i cant get mine to sound like that
NineMonthMedia 3 years ago
Fairly neutral EQ and pres/res from memory. I do remember when I recorded the clean channel I had its volume up much louder than the other channels and the reverb on quite high too.
paulscape72 3 years ago
looks like you like VH why didnt you go with the 6505?
peaveypower212 3 years ago
Mainly because the JSX is more versatile and can pretty much anything the 6505 can do. I also have a modded plexi marshall for full on authentic VH stuff - it gets that woody tone the Peavey's can't. 6505 are good amps too though.
paulscape72 3 years ago
its a little bright imo
beeplord 3 years ago
It is a bright amp, but you can beef it up by raising the resonance or using a different cab. The combo is open back.
paulscape72 3 years ago
WOW man!! That was great. How long have you been playing?
01axegrinder01 3 years ago
very nice guitar playing
higain2 3 years ago
damn dude not only does the amp sound kickass ur a damn good guitarist keep it up. liked the van halen btw :)
coonass90 4 years ago
How do you like the clean channel on this amp? I've heard that it is somewhat bland. Is this true?
mahonmic 4 years ago
Actually the clean is quite good for a higain amp. Its not fender tweed but quite lush and clean all the way up to 10. It sounds better loud and on 120w mode. In built reverb helps. It is a little compressed though. I like more open clean sounds but its definately one of the better clean channels for a modern amp. Cheers
paulscape72 4 years ago
what do you mean by 120 watt mode? Is the combo less than 120 watts? If there is some sort of switch, please tell me, because I cant find one on mine lol
NineMonthMedia 4 years ago
WHOA?!?!?!??!? What kinda funky guitar is that??????? its achoustic but must have super low action or somethin, cuz hes shreddin, and it has a humbucker too!?!?!?!??!?!!??!? WEIRD! lol.
GibsonSGKing 4 years ago
Its a solid body electric called an OLP MM1. It's a licenced cheap copy of the Ernie Ball Axis guitar. Cheers
paulscape72 4 years ago
Is this OLP all stock?
jbstorck 3 years ago
yep stock
paulscape72 3 years ago
It just looks like an acoustic cuz the pickups are colored yellow/black. I had to look twice too at first haha. But it's not a sound hole, just a pickup.
sircraigery 4 years ago
Great vid...great playing. JSX is a little rich for my blood...settled on a Bugera 333xl. It's I guess supposed to be a JSX copy. Have you ever played through a Bugera amp? Have a comment?
jbstorck 4 years ago
Never tried the Bugera sorry. Sounds good!
paulscape72 4 years ago
Very tasty riffs. Can't get enough of it. Your riffs on the crunch part... where did you pick that up? :)
sp00ne 4 years ago
Think Im just improvising some ACDC, blues and Hendrix (wah) during the crunch. Thanks!
paulscape72 4 years ago
I'm looking at either buying this or a H&K Switchblade (They are around the same price). I haven't played the JSX yet...
Any suggestions?
urdaaj4 4 years ago
Has Peavey ever contacted you? With all of the views of this video, the decent sound quality of the recording, and your skills I'm sure it has inspired MANY ppl to buy a JSX... I bet peavey is grateful...
Think about this... say 3% of viewers decide tobuy this amp because of you... that's over 300 AMPS!! Only 300 or 400 of these amps are probably sold in a year because of the price... amazing what you might have done eh?
firekid1239 4 years ago
You know I wrote to Peavey twice in regard to the JSX and they never even wrote back! I never asked for anything, just some technical advice and complimented their amp. They weren't grateful to me as a customer so I wouldn't expect them to be grateful for helping them sell amps.
paulscape72 4 years ago
And the sad thing is that I can picture the CEO of Peavey, Hartley Peavey, sitting on his pompous ass surfing Youtube for anything that has to with his products... coming across your video and saying "hey this guys is pretty good..." What a jackass... lol!
firekid1239 4 years ago
Hartley if you're reading this - send me an old wolfgang you must have lying around or a HP guitar and I'll forgive you ;)
paulscape72 4 years ago
Ahahahaha! Thats weird... you replied at this comment 30 seconds before I clicked to show my buddy the Amp... LMAO!!!
firekid1239 4 years ago
Funny thread... I bought MY JSX because of Paul. And since I have been told that 4 people have bought one cause of ME. Fuckin Peavey!
BFahz 4 years ago
i'll get a JSx soon what cab do you recommend? perhaps i'll build a custom oversized one, what d you think? what speakers do you think will sound best..? i'll get an axis musicman too..
bowo89 4 years ago
Try celestion V30's or a mix of V30's and G75t's in an x-pattern. Also check out the H30's.
I dont think the JSX cab's and speakers are bad either.
paulscape72 4 years ago
NICE
Diisafatslag 4 years ago
nice tone, how loud is that?
bowo89 4 years ago
Pretty low volume... its got a great master volume...whisper quiet or high voltage. Tone stays pretty much the same!
paulscape72 4 years ago
man how long have you been playing - I'm guessing at least 10 years probably more? You one of the best ive seen on the net. Makes me wanna quit! LOL
mallamoozoo 4 years ago
20 years on and off...Im just a hack and feel the same way when I see other people playing!
paulscape72 4 years ago
the diff between the high and low gain inputs is the high gain is for high output pickups such as active or high output passives, and low is for well low output pickups
marshallvalvestate 4 years ago
Sorry dude, its the other way round. The high gain applies higher gain to the input for lower output pickups, and the low gain applies low gain to the input for high output pickups
stuh84 4 years ago
and also for use when you have a lot of effects sucking gain from the chain...
paulscape72 4 years ago
hey, can you tell me what's the difference between the low gain and high gain input?
Klobaerscht 4 years ago
how much do you pay on the 5150?
thehireedd 4 years ago
Not much at the moment as the floyd is broken. Its easily fixed..just haven't got around to it yet. Its cool guitar and plays well!
paulscape72 4 years ago
What guitar is that? lovely tone.
Great playing too mate.
jimladen78 4 years ago
Its a cheap OLP MM1 with floyd. And a custom 5150 at the end. Cheers

find a used jsx on ebay, retube it, buy a new olp floyd rose gutar. Drop a duncan distortion in the bridge. There you go.
lizardneck 4 years ago
Why would he need to find a used Jsx when he already has it?
yourmercifuldeath08 4 years ago
wait, uhm, were you talking to guy in the vid, or some dude in the comments?
yourmercifuldeath08 4 years ago
a guy who commented on how to get the tone for under a grand
lizardneck 4 years ago
Ohh I see, my mistake.
yourmercifuldeath08 4 years ago
Do you know a way to get this tone out of tube amp for less tha a grand? help!
PhatOnion5150 4 years ago
PhatOnion i recommend trying a Crate Palamino V32 its a sweet at tube amp combo for i think its still 500 bucks check harmony central its the best bang for a buck i have one but its obselete now that i have a Bogner Shiva but i was saving along time for that (2200)
rnrbear101 4 years ago
Palomino V Series... Awesome Tone... Depending on the size and wattage.... From 399-999. Check out musicians friend for pricing... guitar center carries most of them. Also check out Peavey's ValveKing series... that is what Joe Satriani based his amp after...
firekid1239 4 years ago
The V series are great amps. I would also recomend looking at the B- 52 AT- 100, or AT- 212. They're incredibly versatile, all tube, and great value at $750 new.
breitbreit 4 years ago
joe based his amp after the XXX series.. you can see him using the XXX on the yngwie G3..
bowo89 4 years ago
it's an olp. Nothing to be ashamed of. They are really good guitars. It's the player not the guitar anyway.
lizardneck 4 years ago
No its an ernie ball music man
