Graphite is easy to machine on lathes or mills it takes no special tooling high speed or carbide tooling works fine, graphite comes in several grades some is denser and some comes copper impregnated like poco C3 it is best for fine details and high resistance to wear.
I don't know what just happened.

Graphite is machinable, it's just very abrasive. Typically, diamond coated mills are used.

It is very easy to machine graphite as it is a rather soft material.
