Ive had this game since it first came out and ive never been able to do that well on the jumping rope game. Decided to start playing it again last night and was trying it, kept getting stuck at 200, tried it again tonight and was getting stuck from 200-201. Finally got through to 300 and from there on it was smooth sailing and I ended up going up to 3898. :)
Exactly. After the 300 mark it's all high-speed jumps until you crack, they don't change the style anymore. Same happened to me, once I got past the tricky part at 200 and mastered the high speed after 300, I went ahead and reached about 2400 something myself. I remember I used to play the jump rope soo much back in the day, I was able to play it with my eyes closed (even though all you need to do is press X when you hear Vivi's feet smack) and memorize the rhythm change at 200
I've found it's easier to just copy what Vivi does with your thumb. When his feet are on the ground, press x and hold it until he jumps. So when he's down your thumb is down. When he's up, your thumb is up. :D
I'm playing this again on the PSP (Downloaded from the network) and I just must get the jumprope king badge again. I did once when the game first came out on PS1. I clocked 38 hours playing this stupid mini game before I finally got to move on, but damnit, I got the badge!
I remember I did this on my PS1. Great memories. I actually reached 1000 jumps as well and I did it solely on the sound that Vivi makes when he jumps. In fact, I found that looking at the screen after jumping 300 times distracts you. If you go by your hearing after 300 jumps and keep a steady rythm, you'll get it no time. Awesome game.

I'm doing this right now... but I use a little "cheat"... as I play FFIX on the PC, I can make save states... in the right moment I always press START and save on 2 different slots... I can't do it else, respect to everyone who does it without cheating :D
In addition to 1whoistornapart's method, you can use a counting system to help you learn the timing and how to anticipate the bubble. Just focus on hitting the first two bubble's in each pattern, then count in patterns. (etc. 1..2..1..2..1..2..1..2 OR 1..2..3..4..1..2..3..4).
If that's to confusing 1whoistornapart's method is just as effective without it, so just try to follow it.

I. Hate. This. Minigame. I can't get it for the life of me. The highest i've ever gotten, and i've played the game through 4 or 5 times now, is like 160. That and the freakin Hippaul racing is a pain too.
Great job! Myself, I got it by surprise. I thought the limit was 999 and tried to reach it. After 1051 I realized that the actuall limit must be 9999 and that it was bullshit trying to get it. So I stopped.
Fun thing with the special reward though, Squaresoft sure knew how to make our efforts rewarding.
@lorkain The video shows you. 300 gets you the Tiger Racket Card and then 1000 gets you the King of Skipping key item. I just did this. I was having trouble with the transitioning into the 200 pattern, but I finally got it down. My vision always started to get a bit messy when it hit around 200. After that I had trouble transitioning into the, high-speed, 300+ jumping. Once I transitioned, though, I made it to 1000 first time. Got more nervous towards the finishing line, though. Feels good.

hehe, i tried to do this years ago. Got the ntsc psn version now, thankfully a lot faster than I remember. I get easily distracted in the first area by all the dialogue boxes, think I'll wait til disc 3.
Gahhhhhhhh..... The initial fight scene score 100 was WAY easier than this nonsense! Probably the only thing I won't have on my save...(besides Excalibur II).

No, even in the beginning of the game (you know the part where you just control vivi) you'll se em kids in the plaza and just talk to them and you can do the minigame.
The minigame can be played over and over, you don't get "one chance" only. Just locate them in the bell tower thingy and play till you have tunnel vision.
Yeah, your last comment kind of confused me. You said no when I asked if I could play the mini game as many times as I liked even after the destruction of Alexandria so I thought that that moment in disk 3 was my last chance.
Now I get it. It's a relief too. Wouldn't want to stay in Alexandria playing jumprope all the time until I got the reward.
I love mini games in real games like this. I made it to 1000 with this myself and I was so focused on it that I kept going till tunnel vision hit and I messed up at 1214 lol. I love it when the give rewards for people like us who go to the extreme
This video gave me motivation since now I know its possible for humans to do it unless you tell me otherwise. I play this on the PSP and my hands get sweaty towards 100. This will take weeks to do for me But I'll keep trying for that 1K.
What exactly is the time signature on the 200's? I can't seem to figure it out on sheet music. Though, I'm no musician by any stretch of the imagination.

Well, the only real method I use is described in the video info. Just listen to Vivi landing and eyeball the exclamation mark. Though being a musician probably helps a little in keeping a steady rhythm...
I must stress that staying calm is very important. If you're nervous, you're likely to overthink things and mistime jumps. The more confident you are, the easier it becomes. Fear is the mind killer!
@PhoenixHelix If you have an emulator you can use save states, I realize it's cheating but it's a hell of a lot less painfull than doing it the regular way
If you're referring to Rat Tail, Griffin's Heart, Doga's Artifact and Une's Mirror, they can all be sold in Treno once, and once you buy and sell all of them you can get the Magical Fingertip which allows you to obtain Excalibur. Also, if you go to the gramophone in the Black Mage Village with the Artifact and Mirror, it plays a track from FFIII.
LOL after 300 Vivi's feet freeze from doin the action so fast. XD 5 stars by the way, Kudos for getting 10k. Best I've ever gotten was 6.3k and my arms were killin me for 2 days afterwards n.n
In my opinion, this is the hardest item in the game to get. Even harder than Excalibur II (although doing excalibur 2 with a perfect game looks harder). Full kudos to you, and anyone else who has got it :)
In all honesty I don't find Athlete Queen hard. It would be hard to do fast, but then I have never been in a rush to get it, and a win rate of about 70-80% towards the end is fine for me. As I have said before, as I use PAL an e2pg is essentially impossible for me, and that is the only situation in which you would need to get Athlete Queen quickly.
Well, my arms weren't the ones that were tired; it was my eyes. Seriously, sitting there for an hour and a half straight trying to get 10k jumps will put your eyes to work. If you're good enough to pick up where you left off, you could try that to keep from staring at the TV so long. All I can say to give advice on how to get there is watch this video and get past the tricky 200 jump part and the rest is simple. If you're going for the 10k jumps, have a glass of water next to you.

I must thank you personally because I was never able to get that far for the longest time. A few years ago, I got 3,187 jumps and my file got corrupted and I was as far as the third disk. I just recently picked it up again because of your videos and it's been most helpful, especially your guide. Soon as I saw your jump-rope video, I went right to it. Now if only I can get the hang of Tetra Master. I so suck at that card game. If you have the time or have AIM, can you help me out?
I congratulate all of you who achieved this annoying and tiresome task. The hardest part IMHO is the jumps from 200-299. After 300, it's just muscle memory and repetition. Now I was insane enough to see how far I could go no matter what and I was able to get to 10,636 without messing up! I didn't even bother trying to pause and picking up from where I left off or anything. If you're really that anal, just settle for the 10,000 jump limit but no more or your eyes will bleed.

YES!! YES!! YES!!! I FINALLY F*CKING MADE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!!!!! I feel like the happiest man alive right now!! took me 2 times today, first I came to 830 then I got 1020!! I never thought I was gonna make it, I really thought I died at 999! The secret is listening to the sound of the shoes, still it's a bitch, but I never have to do it ever again! Now i have a perfect game with all items (except Ex II of course)
My highest score was like 890 or so....yesterday i did it for the first time in like 6 years, got 500, today I can't get past 370....got any tips for the rhythm? I hate this quest....it's the only things besides the 12 hour quest that stands in my way for full completion!!!
Well, I got the Exc. II with 28 minutes to spare, and this only takes about 10 minutes, so you could do it. It doesn't matter though, since I did this *after* getting the sword :P

Awesome. I always tried this but never got very far. Always upon starting a new game, I vowed to get that pesky key item. I never could. :( I may just try leaving it until Disc 3, like your video depicts, then see if it's any easier. The music is a bit calmer than the jumpy festival theme for when Vivi first tries it...maybe that is what's putting me off? Or maybe I'm just crap at timing? :D We may never know...Congratulations on getting it though...I am envious.

I've found it's easier to just copy what Vivi does with your thumb. When his feet are on the ground, press x and hold it until he jumps. So when he's down your thumb is down. When he's up, your thumb is up. :D

I love mini games in real games like this. I made it to 1000 with this myself and I was so focused on it that I kept going till tunnel vision hit and I messed up at 1214 lol. I love it when the give rewards for people like us who go to the extreme

Man i luv FF9, personaly i think its better than 7, just because of the sheer imagination involved in creating it. Totaly a video game masterpiece.

Well, the only real method I use is described in the video info. Just listen to Vivi landing and eyeball the exclamation mark. Though being a musician probably helps a little in keeping a steady rhythm...
I must stress that staying calm is very important. If you're nervous, you're likely to overthink things and mistime jumps. The more confident you are, the easier it becomes. Fear is the mind killer!

If you're referring to Rat Tail, Griffin's Heart, Doga's Artifact and Une's Mirror, they can all be sold in Treno once, and once you buy and sell all of them you can get the Magical Fingertip which allows you to obtain Excalibur. Also, if you go to the gramophone in the Black Mage Village with the Artifact and Mirror, it plays a track from FFIII.

In my opinion, this is the hardest item in the game to get. Even harder than Excalibur II (although doing excalibur 2 with a perfect game looks harder). Full kudos to you, and anyone else who has got it :)

In all honesty I don't find Athlete Queen hard. It would be hard to do fast, but then I have never been in a rush to get it, and a win rate of about 70-80% towards the end is fine for me. As I have said before, as I use PAL an e2pg is essentially impossible for me, and that is the only situation in which you would need to get Athlete Queen quickly.

Well, my arms weren't the ones that were tired; it was my eyes. Seriously, sitting there for an hour and a half straight trying to get 10k jumps will put your eyes to work. If you're good enough to pick up where you left off, you could try that to keep from staring at the TV so long. All I can say to give advice on how to get there is watch this video and get past the tricky 200 jump part and the rest is simple. If you're going for the 10k jumps, have a glass of water next to you.

Hippo races too are not difficult as they seems.

WRONG, Excalibur is the third strongest weapon for Steiner, the second strong weapon for Steiner is Ragnarok followed by Excalibur II.

Wow I have to congragulate you on this. Personally I can never make it past 50, I'm probably too easily distracted.
Heck I've never been able to get the thing in FFX for avoiding 100+ lightning strikes in the Thunder Plains.
I guess I'm not cut out to do these kinds of mini-games

I must thank you personally because I was never able to get that far for the longest time. A few years ago, I got 3,187 jumps and my file got corrupted and I was as far as the third disk. I just recently picked it up again because of your videos and it's been most helpful, especially your guide. Soon as I saw your jump-rope video, I went right to it. Now if only I can get the hang of Tetra Master. I so suck at that card game. If you have the time or have AIM, can you help me out?

I congratulate all of you who achieved this annoying and tiresome task. The hardest part IMHO is the jumps from 200-299. After 300, it's just muscle memory and repetition. Now I was insane enough to see how far I could go no matter what and I was able to get to 10,636 without messing up! I didn't even bother trying to pause and picking up from where I left off or anything. If you're really that anal, just settle for the 10,000 jump limit but no more or your eyes will bleed.

i got to like 800 safely, then i tried to save state and i save stated right as a missed a jump, so it kind of messed it up XP
gonna try it without save states now
I do own the game, but my third disc is messed up, so i'm starting again on my emulator.

YES!! YES!! YES!!! I FINALLY F*CKING MADE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!!!!! I feel like the happiest man alive right now!! took me 2 times today, first I came to 830 then I got 1020!! I never thought I was gonna make it, I really thought I died at 999! The secret is listening to the sound of the shoes, still it's a bitch, but I never have to do it ever again! Now i have a perfect game with all items (except Ex II of course)

Well, I got the Exc. II with 28 minutes to spare, and this only takes about 10 minutes, so you could do it. It doesn't matter though, since I did this *after* getting the sword :P

Awesome. I always tried this but never got very far. Always upon starting a new game, I vowed to get that pesky key item. I never could. :( I may just try leaving it until Disc 3, like your video depicts, then see if it's any easier. The music is a bit calmer than the jumpy festival theme for when Vivi first tries it...maybe that is what's putting me off? Or maybe I'm just crap at timing? :D We may never know...Congratulations on getting it though...I am envious.

This is one of the top 3 most insidious mini-games ever devised. I could never get past around 205 jumps or so because the sudden random changes throws me off when I'm in a rhythm.
