  • I think I've pieced together the French lyrics

"Je suis tellement triste naturellement, et j'aime tant garder ce sentiment

,en cas de simple desir, l'allumette qui porte ma flame."

  • Please help, can someone fill in the missing word in the French lyrics?

Je suis tellement triste naturellement, J'aime ton ??? car de ce sentiment, en cas de simple desir, l'element qui porte ma flamme

We worked very hard, but couldn't complete it!

  • my fave one of theirs.... still got it on vinyl too :-)

  • Wasn't this track also on the A Paris EP (1983) along with Long Hot Summer?

  • I had never heard this before. I'm almost in tears!

  • Great to hear this again after about 27-28 years!! Reminds me of my teenage years drinking woodpecker cider from the local off licence.

    Where have the years gone?

  • @ramborich24 In an alcohol induced haze lol

  • anyone know what feriae pecuniae sunt omnia actually means?

  • I know the match that started my fire, sadly she's married!!!

But it was good fun while it lasted.

An absolutely fantastic song, totally under-rated!!!xxx

  • Hi it's Elizabeth, the match that started your fire x

  • Used ti have this 45! I love it!

  • What a song!! Such emotion throughout lyrically and musically.. Fantastic!!!

If this song were an OFSTED inspection it would be OUTSTANDING!!!!!!

  • What a song!! Such emotion throughout lyrically and musically.. Fantastic!!!

  • What a song!! Such emotion throughout lyrically, musically.. Fantastic!!!

  • tescovaluecrisps..THIS is one of Weller's best songs. You cocknocker.

  • the match that started my fire,,,

  • Introducing the style council cd on ebay for £5 if anyone interested, and no it's not me selling it.

  • Outstanding song and brings back great memories. Nice one Paul.

  • Brilliant song, grabe.

  • According to the linernotes on "Introducing the Style Council" Weller originally wrote this song for "the leading Frech Chanteuse - Suzanne Toblàt" .

Where can I find her music?

Does anyone have the French Lyrics?

  • @olleinsulander Wow! that is a very interesting and unexpected fact indeed

  • @olleinsulander Apparently, if I remember correctly, there is no such person. That was an inside joke, a play on Mick Talbot's name....

  • これはおしゃれだ、独り呑みに最適だ

  • so many memories this track reignites, it just does not get any better, tsc forever....FANTASTIC..

  • hello man head....................

  • Eternal tune.

  • This song it's going to be part of my life soundtrack .(If my life was a movie).

  • La favolosa musica degli anni '80, Paul Weller è l'artista musicale tra i più geniali di quel periodo!

  • Beautiful song....thanks for sharing :)

  • I love this song...esp Pauls vocal version..... Beautiful lyrics and the meloncholic vibe always makes me emotional...

  • Great TSC, great Paul. They colored my youth.. I think they'll always remain in a special part of my heart.

  • what you gave is desire, the match that started my fire

  • fantastic song lot of my life has been like this song x

  • tops thanks...

  • Wonderful song, one of Weller's best. He must rate, along with Chris Rea, as one of Britain's most under rated musical treasures ...

  • @anridapu

personally i don't think Weller is under rated at all. Chris Rea is under rated, but for a good reason.

  • @GeminiSpaceship Compared to the ad nauseum coverage of mainstream acts he is under rated. What is the 'good reason' you refer to?

  • @anridapu

    His music is shite.

  • @GeminiSpaceship Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Even a shite one.

  • why does I-tunes in the united states suck ...??? cant get this version on their collection

  • best paul weller song ever

  • Man, I love this song so much! This version is just wonderful. Weller is amazing. Always will be!

  • a real genius not understood in his time... love Weller too much

  • the man is brilliant and has musical depth on so many levels. He can do a song like this and still blow people away with stuff like Come On Lets Go

  • Whatchya' think Evoluzion?

  • Comment removed

  • One of my favourite songs of all time.

  • considering this was on the first ep, i think this is the real version.

  • Kick out the style bring back the Jam, never a truer lyric penned

  • yeah, but it was when tears for fears went from 'mad world' to 'seeds of love' which kinda negates it :)

  • i agree in a way because the jam had much more meaning in ther lyrics but dont get me wrong the style council was still a truely immence band.

  • reminds me of bein a student and loving it (LS) X X

  • this version of course is the best! but traceys awesome too..weller is simply one of the greatest!

  • Agreed.

    A genius.

  • My favourite Weller tune and that's a big back catalogue to choose from.

  • Timeless.

  • While I'm on the subject...I stood in a lift in Mornington Crescent tube with Bruce wotsit from The Jam..now he looked a right splash! Mr Weller?..never met him, but let's face it..the guy's WELL-talented.

  • What a fab sound! This was the height of chic when it was released in early '80's. The '80's were heavily influenced by the 60's..but still had a slant of its own..Great times. I saw the piano-player on stage in a pub in Clapham!!! when he was in band called The Merton Parkers.. Right arrogant sod!!

  • This is the version from "Introducing The Style Council" the extended EP (33rpm),

That mini-album had THE BEST EVER version of Headstart To Happiness on it.

I really NEED that album on CD.

  • @hanovagia It was also on the other side of the 12" inch of 'Long Hot Summer'. Along with 2 other tracks called 'Party Chambers' and 'LeDepart'. Pax to all from Ian 'SoulBoy' Smith.

  • @hanovagia I have a feeling the EP as it originally was released is now available from itunes, if that helps at all (:

  • @hanovagia email me.

  • They were never big in the States, but I watched them when i visited the UK. this was as good as any he wrote in The Jam.

    Brilliant sad beautiful song.

  • I'm Surprised you say this is "rare". This is the version I've got in the Long Hot Summer EP. Have I got something special and I've no clue?

    $ir Dancelot

  • same here ' i only know this version . brilliant

  • In my opinion, far superior to the album version.

  • Both of them are great: And you're fool if you don't appreciate The Style Council altogether with Everything But The Girl (Tracey sings and Ben plays guitar too)

  • nande kore ga rare version nano?

introducing ni haitteru original version jyan!

  • I love this song his french isn't bad either

  • If paul Weller saw this side show he would die.

  • by all means, he would!

  • Es una de las canciones más maravillosas que he escuchado en vida....

  • the best song ever fantastic lyrics i have always loved this song and always will xxx

  • please play this at the gig in Cambridge in december, love to hear some of the more obscure stuff from the great man ,

    Awsome tune.........

  • 最高!!!有難う。

  • The original version of this song is the best sung by Paul!

  • I'm Only Sad In A Natural Way!

And I Enjoy Sometimes Feeling This Way!!

The Gift You Gave Was Desire!

The Match That Started My Fire...

  • Yes, for me, too. And they prove there was definitely some good music in 80s going on, and some great songs were written then. It was not all just fashion ...

  • Style Council always brings back great memories.

  • I will ALWAYS love Paul. He is the best!

Don't you just want to wander around Paris listening to this??

  • great voice great song

  • I am older than Paul Weller and I still swoon and marvel at his music during the Style Council period.

  • if you noticed the french ,i am sorry for you

  • you clearly cant appreciate a genius when you hear one. its you that i feel sorry for!!! PRAT!

  • I love the way Weller has stayed with us all these years. Always doing want he wanted to do and never being dictated by fashion. Though when this wonderful song came out a lot of people were a bit surprised. "I'm only sad in a natural way..." Check out the French actress Juliette Binoche who later said "you know, I don't have to be happy to be happy". Those Frenchies sure have a healthy respect for melancholy!!

  • long healthy life to you paul..godbless you for your tremendous talent you shared to us all these years...

  • Ok the french bit at the end might not be brilliant ,but who cares when he wrote & sang one of the most beautiful songs laid to vinyl

  • wellers french is fine shithead!!

  • There was nothing wrong with the 80's as a whole musicaly

  • For Yeboah.

  • Maybe that's because he's English..?

And his French may not be that brilliant, but I bet his music's a damn sight better than yours.

    LOL.

  • One of the greatest tunes ever made.

  • Casual Affair is pretty good but is not on here.

  • Exactly.... He has made some amazing songs.... this is one of his best!!!!.....GD

  • @hwschildt Amen

  • @hwschildt so of course.

  • i have this version on vinyl! fabulous

  • paddy, weller, frame, morrissey etc.....fantastic talents from that part of the world....

  • una de mis canciones miticas, paris, el sena el acordeon, una melancolía de fondo

  • bitterestpill83 - NOTHING indeed beats the 80s.

  • I don't post a lot but tell me there's been a cooler more stylish man on the planet, despite reference to Marriot/ Davies (who I worship etc) this guy was the dogs knees fact. Answers on a psotcard please.

  • Absolute classic

  • the cappucino kid....

  • I just found my vinyl copy of this song. It is called a Mini LP titled "Introducing the Style Council."

The liner notes say "Paul orignally wrote this songe for a leading French singer -- Suzanne Toblat.

    Nothing can beat the 80's.

  • epic!!

  • Haven't heard this since 1983. Thanks for the memories. Still sounds so good.

  • I LOVE PAUL WELLER

  • I;m searching for the D.C.Lee version...any one has that?

  • I've heard all the versions and DC's version is without doubt the best !....another song I'm looking for by her is 'Hell or High Water'...think thats what it's called and it is incredible !

  • I know Everything But The Girl had a song called Hell or High Water, not sure if that's the one?

  • i haven't even thought of this song in years but like an old friend, they're always great to see; both paul's and tracey's versions are exquisite...

i agree, this should be re-released; don't make me break out the vinyl!

  • i still have the vinyl too!!!

  • What an amazing song. Does anyone have the clip of Paul signing this on some tv show from May of '83? It was posted on youtube a while back but got removed for some reason.

  • Am loving the Style Council at the moment, specially this tune.

    MODS!

  • I wish Mr Weller would release this track in its own right. It was only in effect a rarely played Bside to Long Hot Summer in 1983.

Now that he's secured his legendary status Mr Weller should share this beautiful gem with the world at large and not just die hard fans of TSC.

  • Probably the most beautiful song/tune ever. Ever!

  • Awesome song by a very very talented man. I saw him in Brixton 3 weeks ago. Brilliant performance by him.

  • Genius.

Sidecrusher is right, the melody is simply amazing...

its so original and totally unique

  • Agreed.

  • style council, take me straight to time and place, great album!

  • Brilliant.

  • Thank you. I never heard that version before. Very nice. I saw the Jam a million years ago and then the Paul Weller gig last week in Cardiff - he still does a fantastic gig - first class.

  • my youthness..i grew up with them...proud i had them to show me what means makin music

  • Best song ever.

  • for you Jane

  • canzone sublime. gli style council hanno fatto storia. peccato che non ci sarà più nessuno come loro. 'Our favorite shop' è un cd pazzesco.

  • this is the best song ever made ..

just listen ..just fuckin list to the melody

  • They must be jealous of how much Paul Weller is cool and talented!!!

  • i too have no idea why style council are slagged off. that 'material,' "our favorite shop," and above all cafe bleu and all the exceptional "odds and ends" and b sides Paul W. was writing are generally, FAR superior to the jam. (indeed i know folks that love the SC and dislike the jam, truth told.)

so, stop slaggin' em,' and get on up!

  • amen to that...he had to grow up and mature some time..

  • I'm in a jam covers band, however I maintain that Weller to this day wrote some of his best and most accomplished music with TSC. Trouble was it was a post punk homophobic or maybe homoerotic nation that couldn't appreciate progress or class and this is from a massive jam fan. longe live TSC.

  • jesus...this song still brings a tear to my eye for no personal reason whatsoever.......have all their stuff on vynil still.

  • It's difficult to say how much this song means to me - the whole period, in fact. The Style Council soundtracked my coming of age; they were my 'Catcher in the Rye', as I looked out on the world and towards socialism, or at least my earliest take on it. It remains a mystery to me why people slag TSC. This is music full of yearning, driven by a man whose passion for winning hearts and minds was bursting out of TSC's impressive, experimental back catalogue. Music that dreams are made of.

  • Jim, I second your every word and lived those times in Brazil. I had the vinyls of course...

Good to know there´s more people like us in this world!!! Patricia Actis

  • TSC was my 'Catcher in the Rye', too, and they never go out of date still now for me.

  • God this brings back memories, still got all my vinyls on these guys!! Simply brilliant!!!

  • that guitar at 2:37, makes a statement by itself.

i love this song so much!

  • BE STILL MY BEATING HEART!!!!!!!!!

  • terrific...

  • Thanks for that eatmypies...if you've got meat and potato, i'll eat one!

  • Anybody got Paul singing a live version of this. Heard him sing it live on Radio 1 an age ago and 'Ever Changin' Moods' with Mick Talbot,as on 'Cafe Bleu'. Brilliant!

  • go to pauls official website and buy it there

  • This version by Paul is waaaayyy better than Tracy Thorn's. Her's was just boring and flat. Paul put some soul into it.

  • so many great memories.this song is 1 of his best really relate to it brilliant

  • The missing sentence in French is: ton cadeau s'appellait désir (your gift is called desire)

  • Introducing the Style Council is such a classic album. Not one bad cut on the entire mini LP. Depending on my (many) moods I flip flop over which tune is my favorite. This week it's definitely "Paris Match". Thanks for posting

  • i enjoy sometimes feeling this way...

  • Simply hair-rising... So many souvenirs... Tracey Thorne's version is best sung, but I find much more feeling in Mr Weller's singing. By the way, I'd be very grateful if someone could provide the french lyrics at the end. I haven't been able to find them anywhere, and my French is not good enough... I just understand the first and last lines, "je suis tellement triste naturellement" and "l'allumette qui porte ma flamme"... or something like that. Thanks in advance.

  • the french verse is the english verse just before..same but in french..im only sad in a natural way and i enjoy sometimes feeling this way...ect ect

  • Thanks a lot... I had gathered so much, but since there was no direct translation, I had my doubts.

  • In the end of this song Paul says :"je suis tellement triste naturellement, mais j'aime tant garder ce sentiment ...

l'allumette qui porte ma flamme (ad libs)

The match that started my fire (ad libs).

    Bye!.Josie.

  • thank you very much. That makes three lines out of four!!!!

  • It was my pleasure to give you a help with this translation !.

    Bye é Viva la musica!!!.

  • @jordijota01 We tried but I'm not sure we got it right. See my other post.

  • best weller song ever...

his version is FAR better than EBTG.

  • LOVE EBTG BUT YOU ARE SO RIGHT.

  • annies song !

  • what a track... weller is king .... makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck... and balls ! long live the jam... god bless weller

  • Hi Joeleaver listen to 5 mins of joy check out the Tube Station cover by Jaymod69 due for release late summer endorsed by Weller. They do a fantastic Malice. The boys do diffrerent versions of the classics including the Council, leave a comment on the site if you like it?

  • Man, Introducing the Style Council.... this takes me back to 1983.... If I would have had any idea of how special that those days were for me as a teen growing up, I would have really enjoyed them a whole lot more than I did. I guess youth is truly wasted on the young. I'll have to go in the garage and dig out my old records. Great stuff, and great post. thank you!

  • I'll email it to you if you ask me nicely.

  • I would be ever so thankful if you would email this to me!
