One of the few songs where the lyric "babe" works. She slows it down and strips it. She often sounds like she's going to fall apart and almost loses the original tune, then catches it again, teasing the lovers of the original and opening the door for those that never heard the original. Yes she nails it. This is how to cover. She does alot of stuff like this. It's as if she discovered Alex Chilton singing "Holocaust" on the Big star "Sister Lovers" album and made it her starting point.
Very nice! I've always loved this song (since my old Buffalo Springfield LP) ... but I understand the lyrics and emotion much better on Emily's version. Good job, Emily.
You shouldn't base a cover on the original. I think it really limits yourself when you do so. Artists who just imitate couldn't call themselves artists.
Emily is amazing, and I believe she did a brilliant job with this.

What overated no-talent garbage! She must have indeed blown more than a few. Youtube overexposure, baby. I just had to listen to hear how mediocre this is... Yikes!
Gawd, I know a college dozen dorm girls who can chill a soul in a way bigger way with just a beat up old guitar.
I don't love it. The song doesn't really suit her voice or her "sound". Granted, she does feel the song and expresses that, but in her own way, which I don't feel does the music justice.
Stick to what works for you. Everyone has their own voice with which to sing their own songs.
"Stick to what works for you..." You sound like Mike Love's rant against Pet Sounds, and how on earth can anyone know even a thimble about Neil Young and say something like that. You never stick with what works, mate ... not if you are a true artist. You must be one of those concert goers screaming for all the "hits" from an artist when the artist is concerned to get over to you her newer ideas and work. I hate them worse than lepers ... P.S. Leprosy is also know as Hansen's disease. Now there's a band I miss. And a hole in the head.
the last line was straight from the on the beach album and has nothing to do with actual leprosy. revolutionary blues, Neil Young's sketch of the Manson murders ... you may not be aware that Neil Young thought very higly of Charlie's songwriting and singing talent.
Wow, I didn't know that. I think I would like to look into that. Then again maybe I shouldn't be surprised that just because someone's capable doing eveil doesn't mean they can't write.
Neil Young is on record about this ... how, every time Manson picked up a guitar and sang ... it was magic ... it was like a butterfly flying into a flame ... the song and lyrics would appear, never to be heard in that same form again. The constantly changing Neil Young dug that!

YAWN! you know what. i have the Knives Don't Have Your Back and What is Free for a Good Home but this cover is less than inspired. she runs it through the Emily Haines solo filter. this isn't her and Shaw taking on Elliott Smith. she just walks thrugh this one. it's like when Cat Power does a half-ass'd cover (some of hers are fantastic) it just takes the life out of the song. she brought this song down to being a medium grade track on her album. less than impressive given the original.
One of the saddest songs in the face of history, and you want "enthusiasm?" I am beginning to see what Hunter Thompson meant when he used the phrase "The New Dumb."

How should looks really matter? Music is about hearing. And, I'd say she did a wonderful cover of, "Between the Bars". Of course, it's not as good as Elliott's, covers barely are better than the original, but you should give her respect. I think it was a pretty good cover.

Exactly. She sings it with a strain I believe is from the heart. She sings it like she's exhausted, which is perfect when you listen to the lyrics.
It is terribly beautiful. I couldn't've asked for a better rendition.
nunzilla 4 years ago
that is such a stupid comment to make. straining indicates an inability to hit the notes.
she sings it like she can't sing at all. which is a very accurate statement.
if you listen to the original, you can tell the difference between singing from the heart and not being able to reach the notes.
your statement is almost as pretentious as she is.
