@seizetheweakened Yeah. That's one of the reasons The New Main Street Singers were my favorite in the movie. Perfect satire of The New Christy Minstrels (who I actually do kind of like).
I'd like to some in-studio footage from the recording session. It's pretty obvious that Steve Martin's singing lead vocal and probably playing banjo as well. Very Martin-like to do a project like this as a goof and then make sure your name doesn't show up in the credits anywhere.
@tdelamont What? This was a live performance they recorded for the movie. The people on stage are performing and singing. They also did the soundtrack recordings.
@LtZaroff They are definitely playing live, and did really do an actual concert, but they replaced or enhanced the live recording to fatten it up in post-production (for instance, three-part female harmony when there are only two women in the group).
@tdelamont Yeah, it's always been obvious to me that the audio here is at least partially canned. My understanding is that some of the performances in the movie were completely live and some were half and half. All of these folks can really sing and play well, though. I was lucky enough to see the extremely brief Mighty Wind concert tour in 2003. One of the best and most fun concerts I have ever seen. Boy, I wish I had a DVD of that show.
Does everyone realize that all the lines to this movie were Improvisation? They were given a rough idea of how the story line was to play out and the rest was off the top of their heads in one or two takes. Same thing for Best in Show and Spinal Tap. While Guest and Levy provided the story and an outline of the roles, the principal players were required to create their characters and they did it brilliantly.
@valar83 That's great! And therefore (when I first watched a bit of this movie in the Living Room with my dad today; in and during my process of doing some Cutting & Organizing Work on some of our Pumpkin Carving Patterns)... I love this Cool, Great & Fantastic "Never Did No Wandering" Train Song (sung by The New Main Street Singers) so very much as one of my absolute favorites, too!
Parody is the best way of doing something straight you like doing and which seems out-of date without being criticised by others .Well done! Two faced performers, aren't they?
@3Pitous not just without criticism, but with acclaim! I love these decietful a-holes all the same. I want to set their cardboard cutouts in my basement so I can sing with them.
All republicans to a man jack ..... theyll properly name names and put poor ol peter seeger out of work for a another decade or so just to leave him standing their singing ,,,,,, hey wha happen I can't do my wuerk....and ....er...so forth... etc

@ChildofBrando the old guy is George Menschell (played by Paul Dooley) who according to the film was a founding member of the group. Dooley can't play the guitar, which was worked into the script in true Reiner-McKeen-Guest et al fashion. Blink and you'll miss it, but although he doesn't play a note he takes a moment between songs (3:07) to tune the guitar. As usual with this team, every time you watch the film you'll find things you didn't notice before.

R.I.P. Paul Dooley !...and if you notice, he never plays a note on his guitar, he just snaps his fingers ( out of time )..

@oldfmfcorpman That's the gag. He's the only original member of The Main Street Singers, and they don't let him play.
