  • fucking amazing

  • I have loved them since 1979 and never stopped. Even as they evolved. The early days were the best but the sadest day ever was when phil left because they aslways threw in some classic with every consert!!!!!!

  • I've been obsessed with the album Trick of the Tail for two weeks now. I won't go a day without playing the whole thing, not to mention a couple songs twice over.

  • @lavaxtris1 same here

  • OH god...what an amazing version. These guys will always be my favorite. They're just the perfect band; end of story.

  • As nice a guy as Chester is, he just pounds ALL THE TIME. There is little to no subtlety in his playing.

  • Phil was in his prime during this era, his vocals are amazing on the Duke record and tour.

  • 13 dislikes?? Must fans of the song I can't' dance....lol

  • i'll never understand why genesis didn't officially release this concert vid.

  • a trick of the tail is Genesis's last album, as far as I am concerned

  • @escapefromitaly What about Wind And Wuthering? My favorite Genesis is Trick Of The Tail through Duke. Phil's voice sounded best on this tour and record in my opinion.

  • its definately not the duke tour as he didnt have a beard then, was older looking and it was the time when girls were taking more an interest in the band..the duke tour was my first time seeing genesis in southampton gaumont now the mayfair.

  • @markjgoffin Yeah it is. 1980. Duke tour.

  • I love those 2 albums, Trick and WW are my 2 favs, and then Duke Great all the way through.

  • @Ludhamlad Duke tour....1980 bro....

  • The rumor has it that this song was about Peter Gabriel leaving the band. Read the lyrics and tell me what you think. I think Gabriel turned around and replied with "Solsbury Hill" on his solo album.

  • @roccotool As with 'Angels never know it's time to close the book and gracefully decline (Ripples)?

  • makes my heart sing, trick was the 1st album i ever bought, had the good fortune to see the W&W and Then there were 3 tours, the 90's big venue tours were but a pale imitation, nice namechecks on JLP, RTF, what about Stanley Clark (Schooldays),Quantum Jump etc

  • @Ludhamlad Yeah, speaking of fans, I drove to Florida once to see them, guess it was around 1990. Phil came out, sat down on the edge of the stage, and called the thing off. Said his voice was giving him problems. Now, I think he could have spent a bit more time, and everyone seemed to think it was a joke. But when it turned out to be real, there was lots of booing and stomping of feet. Not what I would have expected in the 70's.

  • @Ludhamlad Yeah. I felt like a golden oldie at their concert in Detroit a few years back. Flew in from Japan to see that concert. 13th row center section. I was singing along to I Know What I Like and this young guy behind me, seeing the concert with his mom, asked me what album it was from. I think a lot of the crowd probably wasn't really familiar with early Genesis. I remember traveling from N.C. to Virginia a couple of times in the 70's. Drove from N.C. to Iowa once.

  • @Ludhamlad First tour I saw was W&W at the Atlanta Fox Theater. Only time I saw Hackett with Genesis

  • @Ludhamlad Have to agree.

  • I saw this tour at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey...unreal.

  • The Squonk is a legendary creature reputed to live in the Hemlock forests of northern Pennsylvania.

  • Genesis, my all time favorite band, saw this tour and many many other tours. Phil is a kick ass drummer, him and chester together, a high light of a concert. Hope their is a reunion concert, I'll be there.

  • This the Duke Tour - 1980 - i saw them at portsmouth guildhall - their last uk date on this tour - they were superb

  • What a far cry from Phil's vocals in the 2007 reunion.. his voice is badly shot now. let's reminisce then..

  • Trick + W&W are such great albums! I think 70's Collins-Era Genesis is some of the most underrated material...

  • in loving memory of my uncle Sandro...who teach me and growed me with this beautiful band...

  • WAS AT SHOW IN PHILA -OUT-SIDE- TWO DIFFRENT TIM'E !'S PHIL'S TOUR??//OR MA MA ~LAND OF CONFUSION TOUR ! WAS ON GROUND'S BOTH TIME'S SUMMER DID I WILL FOLLOW ! OR FOLLOW ME ! WAS THE BEST ! DONE AS IT WAS DAY TIME SUN WAS SETTING ! WAS SO COOL ! COOLER FULL OF BEER AND GOD KNOW'S WHAT ! FROZEN MUSHROOM;S !

  • @Ludhamlad you are correct, this is May of 1980

  • @Tommygun1028 It was 6th May 1980 in fact, I am pretty certain. The night before the BBC Whistle Test recording on 7th May 1980. The 6th May one was much better! They washed their hair for the 7th May one! Mike and Phil both had less unruly hairstyles onb the 7th. Phil's voice was rough as a porcupine's ass in places for the 7th May gig that was broadcast. It's magic, whatever. I love this 'Squonk'. It might as well be about me. :-( It is like 'Trick of the Tail' live, 4 years later.

  • @Tommygun1028 Also, Phil couldn't sing this song in 1976 with the power and soul he displayed here in the 1980 version, although he always had a lovely voice for the softer material like "Entangled" and "Ripples". His voice steadily improved with each tour, but the quality and projection of his vocals made a quantum leap in between "And Then There Were Three" and "Duke."

  • Will always remember this Trick of the Tale tour..we were in beautiful Toronto,Canada 1976...ahhh the greatest generation...feel so sorry for the kids today.

Thanks for this and bless all my Youtube friends!

    G

    Toronto

  • @repelghosts Wasn't Phil's first ever singing frontman gig at London Ontario Canada, 1976? So you had one of the VERY FIRST Phil gigs! Imagine you have a tremendous group, one of the best ever, your famous singer leaves and then you start afresh with one of your own family as new singer. That is so wonderful really. No-one says that it is so BRILLIANT that they had the talent to replace Peter Gabriel in the band already and didn't have to recruit an outsider. That is why Genesis is so special.

  • Wow! I just saw a video of Daryl playing with Jean Luc Ponty. Hmm. The guy had his medals before joining Genesis...

  • @vivelavidarocka Ahhh, someone else who knows of Jean Luc.

  • @3daypriest Isn't a shame? IMO one of the best composers of our time. Just saw him with Corea & RTF. Ergasmic!!

  • @vivelavidarocka I've got a lot, if not most, of Jean Luc's work. I think Cosmic Messenger is my favorite. Can hear it in my head right now.

  • Where Is Peter Gabereal????????????????? Viva Peter and thanks for trying phill

  • @xylographersbus You are mistaken. Peter NEVER sang on "Squonk". This was originally on "A Trick Of The Tail", the first album AFTER Pete had already left the group!

  • @SilentWingsOfFreedom Thanks for correcting me on what Peter did not sing on due respect to Phill Collans thx agin

  • @xylographersbus No problemo!

  • @SilentWingsOfFreedom I think Wind & Wuthering came out right after Lamb and before Trick. Gabriel left after Lamb.

  • @bdfilms01 Wind & Wuthering came out 6 months after A Trick Of The Tail. Both came out 1976.

  • @SilentWingsOfFreedom Well said. On the 1993 Virgin UK remasters, the stupid record company put Wind and Wuthering before Trick of the Tail on the album picture list. Idiots. Just because they were both 1976 and someone cocked up. Of course Trick was before Wind as you say. Tric was recorded I think Oct/Nov 1975 and released early 1976 The Trick tour, then the Wind album later in 1976, then Wind tour in 1977 (most of Seconds Out live album is from that 1977 tour).

  • @TheOmanJam Ahh, "Seconds Out". My favorite live album by ANY band! It definitely marked the end of an era for Genesis. They were still good after 1977 but the magic was gone. :(

  • @SilentWingsOfFreedom Right you are. A Trick Of The Tail and Wind and Wuthering were the first two Genesis albums I listened to.

  • OK Iam looking for Barbara from 1978

  • A Squonk is a possum like creature that is ugly and often hunted and ridiculed in PA.

  • I always thought the ending on this song seemed a bit strange on the album, but here in concert it makes sense. Feels more natural than on the album.

  • Yes it is Chester! I remember Phil's shirt on the Tour . I queued up overnight outside Birmingham Odeon and got 4 front row tickets

  • Chester is Main Man!! Bill Bruford is Very Good on the Skins, but for Me its Chester every time.

  • @walaron1 gotta be joking bruford has much more talent than chester

  • Absolutely based on the date this is Chester - having seen both live in the 70's and then both solo Phil and Genesis the 80's and the 90's, Chester was always the better match for Phil's drum style.

Was lucky enough to see Phil's 1st solo tour at Penn State in the old Rec Hall (seated 5,000 max) in a first row seat directly over the stage - still maintain was one of the best showmanship shows I ever saw. Real w/out all the lasers, etc.....Just being himself - felt raw...

  • This is Toronto? Probably explains the absence of dim-witted heckling.

Sometimes I'm not proud to be English.

  • @TheExcelsior1 Actually it's the Lyceum Theatre in London

  • the best band ever

  • Sorry guys, but it's time to admit that Phil was the superior live singer. Oh, and Chester is twice the drummer Bruford ever was with Genesis.

  • @BillBrolse agreed. i love gabriel genesis to death, but he often sounded pretty bad live. he had his "on-nights" too though. he sounds mostly good on the shepperton studios 1973 footage.

  • lets be careful before we jump all over someone....Bruford played live with Genesis for maybe 6 months in the mid 70s....I'm pretty sure it's Chester Thompson after that

  • great beard

  • Grande Phil grandissimo Phil

  • @MrContemarco63 diciamolo forte!!! non mi piace chi, storce il naso sostenendo l'assoluta superiorità di Peter Gabriel. sono 2 grandissimi. punto.

  • What an aweful version of the song. I rather listen to the studio version.

  • @PhilistineTheArtLuvr ha ha... it is different for sure...

  • Daryl Stuermer on guitar... played with Ponty, Gina Vanelli... great guitarist.

  • @dsteele1 Daryl has some pretty good solo albums too. Steppin' Out is really good. "Go", well, it took a few listens.

  • good days thanks for posting good song

  • Saw them at the Richfield Collisieum south of Cleveland about this time.

Seeing Peter Gaberial and Phill together was unbeliveable.

  • obviously it's chester!!

  • I love the subtle fusion spin these guys put on their songs in the mid/late 70s and early 80s

  • They should have kept this song in the setlist on EVERY tour. The 83 medley was okay, but a full version would have been better.

  • I always found this song to be much better live than the album version.

  • @ladyjerrico check out the 2007 remix in the Genesis 1976-1982 box set. It packs a lot more punch than the original mix.

  • Thought it was live in Toronto,Canada 1980...looks like it...

  • @repelghosts This was recorded at the Lyceum Theater in London 1980

  • @Tommygun1028 Tommy's dead on. I have two copies of this performance, both noting it was the 1980 Lyceum Theater show. Actually, among a lot of the bootleg traders it's simply known as 'The Lyceum Show' since it's one of the more heavily trafficked...:) Can't remember offhand who originally filmed / produced the performance

  • That's Chester Thompson on the skins!

  • Jeez, what a stiff and lifeless version this is. Viva G+ Bruford 76!!!

  • Thank God ...... I saw Genesis live once .... I can die in peace

    Adair Torres

  • Phil is good, but he's no Peter Gabriel

  • Phil did some of his best work in a Hawaiian shirt.

  • @N1095A I heartily agree!!! Not to mention "The Bearded" Look suited him well.

Gabriel always reminded me of a "Mysterious Traveling Minstrel" in his shows, whereas Phil "felt" like a bloke you could have a couple pints with swapping stories.

  • No bay thats Bruford on the chops..long before your time kiddy...he was in Brand X a bar band for the real 'listeners'..who appreciate this form of prog rock....$20. bux if you can tell me who made up the rest of Brand X...no computers G...you have 30 seconds?

    Gemma

  • @repelghosts Chester Thompson is on drums here

  • @Tommygun1028 chester played for zappa also!!!

  • ..."surprise, surprise"... This is my youth

  • @repelghosts john goodall was the bassist

  • @daddysevenpointfiver I think he was the guitarist. Percy Jones was the Bassist.

  • @repelghosts not Bill Bruford on the drums actually its Chester Thompson

  • @jim546 Both Hackett and Rutherford played the guitars on "A trick of the Tail"

recordings of the album. Live, yes . Steurmer played lead guitar.

  • GREAT STUFF!

  • It was wonerful in front row ,dead center in 1980 in Toronto..little too close though K...email me

    Hard Hugs

    Gemma

  • Love this song! Thanks for this. Such a good song. Never gets old.

  • what's a squonk?

  • @nat00ben06

It's kind of like the sound of a Duck

  • @nat00ben06

A Squonk is a small creature with a beard that spends much of its early life hiding behind drum kits. When abandoned by its vocalist, it ventures forth to the front microphone to confront an audience, only to scurry back and hide behind the drums when confronted with instrumental passages.

Sadly, in later life, it can often be seen singing insipid pop songs.

  • @TheOmanJam but he did well... great play along..

  • Darryl stuermer, a quite acceptable guitarist.

  • sherytoo , Mike Rutherford played ALL guitars on And then there were three .

Daryl was only guitarist for live shows

  • steve hacket played guitar till the and then there were three album.

  • @sherrytoo no, Steve Hackett's last album with Genesis was Wind & Wuthering. Daryl Steurmer was the guitarist on And Then There Were Three.

  • @Tommygun1028 Steurmer was only used in live performances, Rutherford did all guitars on that album.

  • @jim546 Thanks, I didn't know that

  • @Tommygun1028 and genesis would never be the same again :(

  • who is playing guitar

  • Timeless & Epic

  • Perfect song and performance!! The bass line is phantastic and I also love how Phil is telling us the story - with all the gestures, you could believe he's really got the poor Squonk in his sack.

  • Phil Collins was just so awesome. Powerful singer, great drummer and song writer. Very under rated, truly one of the all time great rockers...

  • Back at this...Daryl S. is good, really good. Must be a strange position to be in for him

  • Phil is on FIRE

  • Phil was a different human being here. It's hard to imagine how he became so 'Hollywood' and did all that insipid stuff later with Genesis and on his own. You can see the mischievous spirit of Collins and the band here - where did it go? I guess they just went for the money later and forgot the spirit. Now listen 'ere Collins!

  • The bass line on this is so fucking awesome and love the keyboard outro at the end!

  • THIS IS SO GREAT!! Thank You :*

  • Chester is all over the drums...wow, excellent. Thanks for posting.

  • Hey, check out Moonlit Knight Genesis Tribute out here on youtube, and if your in the North West of england, come an check us out. Cheers ;-)

  • 1986 so very sad. All the king's horses and all the king's men coulldn't put him together again was there a sadder Genesis song? But LONELY MAN ON THE CORNER!!

  • Damn, its hard to listen to the album version of this song after hearing this. Phil's raspy voice and his phrasing on this version are so solid, and the bass pedals are so huge, it's my favorite version. And when people slag Phil, just direct them to this video. It will have the same effect of throwing a pie in the silly sod's face. 4:42 to the end in particular. (I can't listen to the album without the whistling bit now. Phil was The Kid.)

  • Phil is singing through a Shure 57?? Was that really the mic of choice for the tour?

  • @ReverbAndBeer No, it's a Killeen harmony.

  • Yeah I saw them at Winterland in SF in the mid 70's? They wrere great!!

  • This is Genesis, so they can do what they want, but the song does call for closed hi-hat in the beginning. Like when I play it in my band, at the 1min and 58 sec mark (shameless plug). Search "waiting room promo"

  • Love it!!!

  • FABULOUS! Did you know today is the 30th Anniversay of this Sqonk rendition 6th May 1980 it was - and now it's 6th May 2010. I bet the BBC don't bother to broadcastit! The BBC actually showed some songs from 7th May 1980 on TV that year on The Old Grey Whistle Test programme, (not quite as tight a performance as the bootleg video of the 6th, Phil's voice was rougher on the 7th) but wow, what a group!

  • God, A Trick of the Tail was SUCH A GREAT ALBUM! Not too many people know about it.

  • I´m not fond of how Chester developed the beat on that song since the 70s. I personally think that nobody played Squonk better than Bill Bruford. He made the song flow while Chester emphasizes too much on 1s and 3s. Also, the permanently open hi-hat doesn´t really fit in here.

  • @rybnikpl weren't open hi-hats in the albumversion to,,. I thought so,,.

  • thank you Thank You THANK YOU TOMMYGUN ~ !!

  • You're WELCOME!!

  • @Tommygun1028 Tommy, do you know where this was filmed?.

  • @jonquil4000 at the Lyceum Theater in London in 1980 and is available on Genesis Six Hours Live 2-DVD set available at Tommygunvideo website. Click below the video to see my website or send me a msg

  • thank you Thank You THANK YOU TOMMYGUN ~ !

  • KiCk ASS!!!

  • The way the beat kicks in is out of this universe.

  • AMAZING SINGER

  • that tour was angry phil tour, right?

  • Chester was kickin the fuckin drums here!

  • Collins is a fuckin dynamo here, Gabriel or no Garbiel.

  • holy fuck, this is a great song. amazing live video, too.

  • love the deep bass of the old Moog Taurus 1 bass pedals

    great song!

  • Not to mention that typical Yamaha CP70 "Clang" that Tony is using here, I actually like it better than the Pianet he used on the recording.

To get back on Rutherford, I played a Shergold Doubleneck like the one he uses here, it was like strapping on a grand piano, by far the heaviest guitar I ever played.

  • hackett is my favorite musician of all time, but daryl can definitely play...

  • Is that really Daryl?!?!?

  • Nope,,,,,stunt double

  • YES...IS DARYL ...

  • Americans....well there is merely 2 kinds: the hamburger-casino idiots , and the genuine PEOLPE. TOMMYGUN is CLASS!

Bernard De Schepper is my name.

  • hello friend! 5***** for this Genesis vid

and have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    SUN :)

  • Those were the trippy days. the days when we listened to pre-commercial Genesis music and knew that consciousness would turn mystical one day. I'm still hoping for that kind of spiritual evolution in our lifetime.

  • And do you rember such bands like YES, ELP or King Crimson? That was fantastic, wasn' that?

  • Wow, Collins was in superstar form. His voice was perfect as well.

If casual fans like that, they need to seek out Seconds Out right NOW!

  • Too bad this song was only played live for a short period. I believe after Duke, they never played it live anymore

  • @jossy2112 At least they play Los Endos.

  • @jossy2112 They did bring it back into the set on the Mama Tour in the oldies medley they did including such songs as Eleventh Earl Of Mar, The Lamb, Firth Of Fifth, and The Musical Box and others. They switched that medley up a few times over the course of the tour, but Squonk was included for a while.

  • Who is the guy with the perm on guitar?

  • @Stroboskop Daryl Stuermer. Replaced Steve Hackett only live.

  • @Stroboskop it's Daryl Stuermer. He looks a lot more respectable these days.

  • Dont care what kind of shirt he wears, talent is talent my friends!

  • F#($#*ing A!!!!! Phil was on F#@($# INg fire in these days!!! It reminds me of my childhood, my teenage years, damn, were those the daze!!!!!!

  • Love the use of the Moog Taurus bass pedals by Mike!

  • Great performance with a really inspired Phil Collins...very good the whistle at 4.47!

  • hawaiian shirts were in fashion in the uk in the 80's these songs remind me of smoking weed in the summer school holidays

    happy times

  • Comment removed

  • hawaiann shirt phil wow

  • It seemed for awhile parts were interchangeable, but the outcome was the same---Beautiful,heartfelt,pounding music...

  • This reminds me of how I had " Seconds Out " on LP years ago and played the shit out of it!!

I need to finally buy a copy of it on CD.

  • Once again the lack of anything resembling intelligent comment/discussion on a youtube comment board reigns supreme! Thanks for not letting us all down, asshats. Great video, by the way. Phil's hawaiian shirt/beard phase... and they made fun of Pete's costumes... tsk tsk

  • better than the no shirt and wristband phase? lol

  • i really hated the guitarist they picked after hackett, this one guy with the 80's mustache adds so many little frills and unnecessary notes in his solos

  • Daryl Stuermer- he was great in Jean Luc Ponty's band, but I can see your complaint.

  • It's called individual style.

  • well everyone has their opinion, cheers:)

  • Cheers back to ya, friend!

  • Phil is very expressive in this performance. I wonder if it's the beard? :)

  • How can any Genesis fan not know thats Chester on drums????

    That astounds me!

  • There's a discussion about this?
