I still have to wonder why there's a command to *delete your entire hard drive* in an operating system. What's the purpose of it? Can someone familiar with the OS explain why Linux has this?
@7ReyZor Oh, okay, that explains it, thanks. I know there's a really mean old trick you used to be able to play on newbie MS-DOS users. You'd say to them that there'd be something cool they could do with MS-DOS; all they had to do was navigate into the system file directory and type "del *.*"...
Heh non offense but your a bit of a inux noob =P. The | (pipe) is for piping commands into other commands so that is why cd | didn't work as it was expecting you to give it another command to run (why after enter it still wanted you to type something).
Also /proc is generated from pids/running processes. Calender and other stuff only worked because everything currently running will not actually be deleted until the file is no longer in use.
@Worfox13 Yes running programs are in your ram but the file itself is not deleted either and still remains on the hard-drive as long as there is an open file descriptor on the file. This is the case even for a 10 gigabyte video file if say your playing it with mplayer and the file is definitely not in ram. The files (even after being deleted) can still be accessed from /proc/pid/fd/$fdnum.
This is why its noticeable on some slow deleting fs cause when its in use it will delete instant
It just goes to show you all... the biggest threat to a Linux-Box is the user. If you don't know what you are doing then stick to your Software Manager.
@campaingboy73 Not really, it says it will destroy Linux if you type something wrong in the Terminal, and even gives you a reminder in the Terminal, so its just kinda an easier way to wipe your Hard Drive.
@KylerWyler It's hard to forget if it warns you that its there. Let's see if you are running Windows, clicked on a poisoned Google Image Search, and the virus creators ask you sincerely, "Are you sure you want to infect your computer with our fake AV?". (And I mean sincerely; click no and remain unharmed). LOL!! This is not evil. More so a game. Plus, even a good Linux user knows even if you re-install the operating system, some (but not all) of your documents can get recovered!
Very interesting. Ive held off infecting my Virtual Machine with viruses ever since that MS Points generator which nearly hijacked my network. I assume rogue anti-spyware tools need to connect to the internet to produce false positives?
the rm -rf / command removes a directory specified, if you run it from the root level of your drive, where all the directorys start, thats when sudo rm -rf / will remove all directorys, given the correct permissions
@rogueamp I know you made that Navashield video a long time ago, but can you do a removal guide for navashield? If you go to n a v a s h i e l d . c o m you can still get navashield so i'm sort of paranoid. Awesome vids.
What a wonderful demo to illustrate the depth of human stupidity! I love it.

ThePhantomSafetyPin 1 month ago
@ThePhantomSafetyPin It's just like the del command in DOS. Except you can specify a folder, and in this case the root directory is specified.
In other words, the command does not exist exclusively to delete the entire disk, however it can be told to do so if the user wishes.
