For me, Inspiral Carpets laid the foundations for indie music in this country. Most people would say Stone Roses, but none of the bands coming out of Manchester could touch this band. Fucking world class!!
As far as quality output start to finish and live performances - The Carpets blew the hell out of The Roses. The Stone Roses made one amazingly incredible album and from the footage I've seen, they were so-so live. The Inspirals made several amazing albums and their concerts are insane to witness.
Get Loaded in the Dark hits the Coronet on Easter Thursday April 1st 2010 and is set to be another sell-out event!!

Saw them live 6 times my fav band to come out of the madchester seen. There is a reform group on facebook which has some good footage check it out would be good to see the Inspirals on the road again.
Madchester (and the following Britpop scene) had far too many British reference points to be considered worth the effort transplanting to the US.
Ironic considering I've learnt about US culture and satire from watching comedies (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Family Guy, etc) that have been put on UK television. : /
It's ridiculous but probably true. All we ever got in the states was the Smiths, Oasis, a little Blur, and one or 2 Stone Roses songs.
It's taken me 20 years to discover this sound, it's a crime. It absolutely could have had a stronger following over here I'm sure. The Smiths were wildly popular, as was Oasis a few years later, but we missed out on lots of great music.
Lol, but if I see a US show on TV where there are Americans listening to the Happy Mondays, I'm going to assume it's not genuine.
One other thing that strikes me about that early 90s period, I often get the impression that Noel Gallagher and co. got their way with dumping 80s synth acts from the top 100 from 1989 onwards, but in America, it feels to me like a lot of elements from the 80s were carried on into 1994, only grunge set it apart.
Lol, Yeah although I did manage to purchase a Happy Mondays album in '89 on a whim, though I had no idea who they were. There were small pockets of folks who were into the Britpop scene, which sort-of overlapped with the "alternative" scene in the late 80's and early 90's. In the States, that period was marked by the decline of heavy metal and big-hair 80's bands, and the mainstreaming of rap and more and more dance music, alot of it loosely-based on britpop, till Nirvana showed-up around '92.
err just have to write this coz it's funny ; yesterday i dreamed & suddenly there was two words : "Inspiral Carpets". i had just read this before one time but it's since i've dreamed of this i'm listening to their really GREAT songs! :-)
@InspectriceGadget What a great dream! :D I wish I could dream of the Inspiral Carpets or the Stone Roses instead of dreaming of people who want to kill me! Ahahaha! :)
@SallyCinnamonette Hey can you speak French too? (sorry for bad english...) :D haha that's amazing to see another person bloody loves Inspiral Carpets & also Blur... ;) & ahhh, great to notice i still remind of this dream one year later! Thank you & keep on dreamin'...Dreaming Music for you i hope too!
To Malross, I thought the bumper to bumper comment meant that while there's a war going on people are still driving to work etc. as normal. It's a funny old world It's a funny old human race!
You know the bit in the song that says "the cars on the highway are backed up and bumper to bumper"? Is that a refernence to the Highway of Death from the first Gulf War? Anyone know?
I need to get some other videoclips in which there are familiar moment shots, that looks like they were a warm private document, a part of somebody's childhood memories. Send any.
one of their best. Not a big hit but last single released while they were first together. Very relavent today. 'It's a funny old world, it's a funny old human race!' how true!
1993 in border between Czech and Slovakia with a gun on my shoulder, after whole 15 months of service, that redhead girl in Prag (it wasnt easy 2 get 2 her second floor) and THIS song all around there. God knows, where she is now.

I don't know if this is the greatest band of the Britpop era, but this is definitely one of the best songs.

This is a great song, but don't get THAT carried away -- The Stone Roses simply can't be compared to any other band of the genre.
