The locomotives you captured in this video are the GP38-2, a diesel locomotive possibly smaller than the Dash 9, which is the most commonly seen locomotive on the railroad. If you ever heard of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad (BNSF), you'll see mostly Dash 9s and maybe some GP38's in tow behind a Dash 9.
Yes, that was the mainline they left the cars on. What if a fast moving train were to come barreling down the tracks and hit those abandoned cars? What would happen would possibly be the fast moving train derailing as it rammed the cars straight on.
in Bliss Idaho where I live they do the same thing the train heads to Gooding Yard and hands its cars that are going east to the Shoshone Local and any cars going to Nampa Yard are placed on the main and the engines run around and hook onto the rear and pull the train back to Nampa Yard so the cars can be switched out.
Haha, they really shot off there. The local here does the same thing, but with the train attached! He/she (yes, we have a female engineer) will ease the slack out, then throw it in notch 8 and hall ass.
@M1911A1 Exactly what I do in railworks! =D Maybe not the best for your passengers per say, but if you do it without breaking a coupler it's a great way to start off. No ripple effect through the train which makes the loco jump randomly in speed.
They were running around the train. They will head down to Chehalis Jct and cross over to the other mainline. Then come back up the other mainline past thier train to Napavine South and back on to the other end of the train. That gets the pointing the right direction to head back to Longview, WA.

hmm that's strange. Maybe the engineers were afraid of boxcars or something

They were dropping the cars to be loaded.

Those first two engines are former D&H GP39-2's. But, have different horns from when they were in-service on the D&H.
