check the rpm sensor on the tranny clean all contacts on that sensor with wd40 or some type of electric contact cleaner. If this does not help, replace the whole tach with a used one.
I probably have some sort of misfire; at 25 and at about 60mph i feel the slightest sputtering/misfire. It smooth at other speeds. I could red line it if I tried but felt no need to go there. I don't get past 75-80mph really ever, so I can't say how it runs at faster speeds. I've read that bad capacitors on the tach could be at fault but I haven't felt like pulling apart the dash to see. I'm still averaging 28+mpg at 178k+miles, so I'm just putting up with these little annoyances for now.
misfire? also can you redline it if you wanted to? or are you controlling it to do it around 2-3000? theres most likely small pin holes somewhere and the electricity jumps and come back.
