That large auditorium reverberation was because Whiteman had leased Orchestra Hall (home of the Chicago Symphony) for these recording sessions. Most dance bands of this era were recorded in studios which were designed to minimize reverberations.
I agree with 78 TIMOTHY. The record has a hauntingly-clear sound, that is not found on most Victor records. Whiteman loved cars and booze. Sometimes he would mix the two, and try to race the state troopers. Plenty of fun in those days.
This record amongst some others were recorded in Chicago Whilst Whiteman was headed back from the coast from a a gig at the Million Dollar Theatre in L.A. on earlier business than King of Jazz and they were recorded just after Whiteman signed Crosby and Rinker to a Contract. The Ballroom that these were recorede in is in Chicago, which accounts for the "Hippodrome" Sound that we hear, which I rather like.
The photo of the guys in the pool is great! And I'm glad you got Laurel & Hardy in there as well. I posted a response to your question about the unknown band photos on the Bix forum, check it out when you get a chance.
The record was made in Chicago and has the same acoustic as the Victor records made in Los Angeles. Its nice. You certainly are doing a good job with the visuals. I've been able to get my postings to sound pretty good but I'm completely ignorant about how to include pictures - other than just holding them up to the camera :-(
Excellent job, my friend! Good call on leaving the audio as is, it sounds great, and the mixture of period images - movie, and sports icons; vintage cars and illustrations, makes for a great looking video! I'd say on your first try, you knocked it out of the ballpark!
