ive known this guy well, actually broke his back in this wreck,... fun fact he is the younger brother of gene snitsky the wwe wrestler. sorry to say i miss him dearly, he has passed this past summer rip derek...i love ya.
must be a great sense of relief, to lose your brakes, then see the sign. phew! then you start free sailing.. yes, i get to enter the sand pit, i've always wanted to see how this thing worked, then, bam!
Ramps in mountain regions have smooth, inclined ramps that allow friction and gravity take over. and the vehicle slows upwards. This flat ramp and the mounds of gravel spaced at intervals replace the effects of an inclined ramp (albeit more violently!). Newer flat ramps have softer and deeper pits alleviating the need for mounds. Bummer for the truck on this round, but it sure beats losing control and crossing a median into oncoming traffic. Or a couple trees on the noggin'.
Wow - Thanks C&D!! I live very near this ramp, and it has actually been completely rebuilt recently. The new ramp is straight and doesn't use mounds of gravel, but a stretch of gravel covered 'road' that the trucks sink into.
Yeah I go to school in Boone, NC and there are always tons of signs for trucks about switching to lower gears, etc and there are a good 5 runaway truck ramps (like one every mile). I'd be terrified of being in a runaway truck....scary! Those drivers sure are brave....
yea and the tractor trailers other than a mechanical failure shouldn't have an excuse for putting it in one. most of the time it's because they don't use the trolly bar and they pump the brakes. which draws air pressure and the brakes get hotter faster. once they get hot hold your ass because they're useless and you're going for a ride. unless you're empty a jake ain't even going to save you.
Note the Wilkes-Barre exit off of the PA Turnpike NE Extension (Rt 115 outside of Bear Creek I believe).
First of all, they ban trucks going downhill for obvious safety reasons. Second, if a truck does violate that ban there are runaway truck ramps there as well. Of course, they will be fined for the violation.
obviously, you are dumb, because they don't 'ban' trucks like that....least not here in the US. Runaway truck ramps are there for a reason...for situations just like that. Truck brakes can fade if you're in the wrong gear or dont stop to check your brakes at the top of the hill. You dont go down slow enough, you run out of air in your brakes, and POOF...you're out of brakes.
true you don't run out of air and you're brakes are gone. but once they get hot enough they're gone. don't matter weather you try to lock them up or not. and personally i think it's sad that this kinda stuff has to happen. esepcailly when they put a fail safe at 60 psi. or at least that's what it is on the pete i drive over the summer.
Interesting, the ramps I've seen in Australia are more like a rollercoaster "U" - the truck enters at the bottom of the "U", rolls uphill to reduce momentum, then if the driver cannot actually lock the wheels properly it rolls backwards up the other side of the ramp.
The reason why ramps are built is not because a truck will runaway if it loses air pressure (In that case the parking brake would lock the wheels up). The weight of the load and not using any sort of engine brake can cause the brake drums to overheat while going down hill. This overheating causes brake fade. Sometimes the brakes can get so hot that the drum glows red and the inside of the drum becomes slick against the brake shoes.
Basically, yes. Usually they are used in mountainous regions where, after scaling down 5 mountains which will accelerate your car/truck well above 100mph your brakes get too hot/worn and stop working without much notice.
FUCKING japs are stupid ass fukk i wish i could get rid of them!!!

THIS STOP DOESN'T PREVENT CRASHES....IT CAUSES THEM!!!
DUN DUN DUN!!
Seriously though, this may be a relatively unsafe one...but at least it stops the truck from rolling into traffic or a town.

As per Car and Driver, damage is usually limited to lower engine accessories and fuel tanks. This truck didn't read the same article we did.
I think the crew that was supposed to grade these piles of gravel missed a spot!

They're supposed to gradually drag the truck to a stop. The rocks are probably the wrong kind. Notice he just rolled over them.
