Any bonus that was contracted for should be honored. Are we going to unravel all of contract law here? Where does it end and at whose discretion? Once you start arbitrarily voiding valid contracts, credit goes out of the window and economic activity will simply collapse.

Many of them got the bonuses because they were hired on AFTER the bailout to clean up the mess left by the scam artists. Due to the rules of the bailout, they could only have a one dollar salary, and the bonus was the rest of their pay. Okay I read some Mary Ruwart and I ~agree with her on some points, for example foreign policy. Then again I don't agree with her on education for example, letting parents decide the curriculum? Great, they'd be teaching intelligent design in the Bible belt thus destroying their children's education.
On the other hand, Rush certainly doesn't agree with her as he's as hawkish as you get. He completely supports the war on terrorism, rendition, torture etc. these nice "freedom" things.

Certain parents now are teaching their kids creationism above evolution (and those kids listen and admire their parents, often). I feel Mary Ruwart's take offers no loss, just the gains she describes. At any rate, to read her book "Healing Our World" would explain to you how it is folks like me can appreciate Rush despite disagreeing with him on points such as Drug Legalization (which Mary, a good libertarian, supports), and thoroughly believe he has the interests of the common man at heart.

First, a bonus contract that is paid out REGARDLESS of how bad you screw up, IS NOT based on merit.
Second, AIG et al executives are not "poorly paid" and rely mostly on bonuses, they are paid well and rely on bonuses TO AFFORD THEIR JETS AND YACHTS. You know, luxury items. That's not "poorly paid" at all, now is it?
Third, Citibank just stopped "bonuses" and upped pay by as much as 50% to some executives. Wow, I feel so sorry for them.

You are correct! They do get paid well regardless of the bonuses. I worked for a company that gave bonuses, and in the small print it stated that the bonuses would be discontinued in a case of company bankruptcy. When our company went into chapter 11, we lost our bonuses. No one whined because we were not pansies like the AIG execs getting pedicures.

There are more people being affected by this than the super rich executives. This is a carpet bomb to hit 3 people. These were not bonuses - they were contractual agreements to pay for works rendered. Employees sacrificed weekends, worked extra hours, etc. and this was their pay. It's certainly good that we're spending our moral condemnation on paying employees for doing their jobs rather than, say, continuing to kill people in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I don't really know whether to feel bad for Rush or not. He really seems like there is some serious self-loathing going on in his life. It's kind of weird. He's been caught how many times with drugs "that weren't his"? It feels like he hasn't even thought about what he's saying before he says it and it's like he's trying to convince himself. Cenk again is showing his lack of study. First, the wealthy pay 95% of the NYC tax, that is why without them the city would fold. Next, Limbaugh is saying that the pay structure was approved by the same politicians that now decry it. AIG was encouraged to insure the banks that were making the loans that the Barney Franks and others in Congress were encouraging. The Barney Franks of this world knew about these bonuses a long time ago. Why complain now? Because it is politically expedient.

Even if Dave were correct, would 50k be a horrible salary? There are a lot of people living in New York City who make 50k and less. I can tell that a lot of people on this forum have no idea what NYC is like. 50 + % of the people in the city don't own cars.

if u actually did your research, AIG fired all the employees who made the bad trades. The exec's getting paid large bonuses are ones who are turning the firm profitable again, not running AIG as though it'a a hedge fund. The bonuses are used for retention of talented people.
Even so, i still dont agree with the bonuses; you dont need to pay large bonuses to retain talented people in the current climate - Hedge funds arnt exactly head-hunting at the moment.
