  • I love how Ric, Ben and Eliott are totally grooving during the very cool break at 1:40-1:55 capped by Ric's "That's right." And Ric's voice is very underrated, even by Cars fans for some reason. It's not as classic or versatile as Ben's but totally unique and interesting, which is after all what rock/pop is about. Incredible band!

  • @IntheBloodDoc i agree 100%,ric seems to get some poor comments on utube

  • 2.44,,whats that grin about,do you think he said to himself i nailed that one?

  • ric is super cool in this one,,the swagger is the mutts nuts

  • one of the best wistful yet ironic love songs ever.

  • Wow, that is killer listening to Elliott smoke out a big fatty tone from that Les Paul's neck pick up. Can't do that with a strat. Different from the recorded version and I love that raw punky side of the Cars.

  • This is such cool stuff, the cars.

  • what kind of clothes is ben orr wearing?

  • @Shinekillr Looks like he's letting his inner "Star Wars Geek" shine through. Uniformy. Way hot.

  • amazing song and sound. i remember watching this on TV when i was 13 or 14 and thinking 'what a cool song and who is the adorable guy in the middle?' went out and bought 'shake it up' and the previous 3 records. i also began my lifelong fantasy love affair with benjamin orr. i just wish they would release the entire fridays series on dvd - there were some great performances of which The Cars was one.

  • I remember watching this when it aired!!!!!! Damn I got old quick!!

  • @rots4me XD

  • I, like dobegirl01 put it so eloquintly, I miss you Benjamin "since you're gone". May you rest in peace. I was fortunate to be able to have seen them live in concerte at the Buffalo Memorial auditorium New York 11/17/ 80.

  • Like Ben's jumpsuit

  • my favorite band back in the day and I love their music but their live show I went to lacked emotion.

  • sigh..........

  • sigh............

  • Benjamin Orr is so missed now that The Cars are back together.

Elliot Easton is rocking it then and now! Professional All The Way!

  • @JesusFreakJene I so agree with that, he is remembered big now ! Long live the legacy!

  • These guys are a PRIME example of what a tight rock group is supposed to sound like live. GAWD i miss these days of just cool great music. The Cars are one of the ALL time best, in my opinion.

  • what the .....!!! the guy in a blue dress so thin and moves like a puppet.....

  • @volikoto its called stage presence and Ric had tons of it... he looked like an animatronic puppet rock star he was such a presence and spectacle just to look at him and the beautiful music that was coming from him and the band.

  • Every so often I come back to this video and marvel at how cool these guys were RIP Ben!

  • @6cobaltblue1 Good stuff, we request you keep us informed on your latest studies.

    So much to learn,

so much to share. So many people need to be made aware.

There are so many distractions that are fun but not entirely beneficial for us. Just a few minutes a day of reflection and searching for truth does wonders for our soul development, and then we can continue with our other wordly, mindless, entertaining pursuits! :)

  • this song reminds me of a lost lover in a death and makes try move on its a good song

  • Ricks style choice was a little off this day even though its still cool some how. He reminds me of a big blue praying mantis for some reason........hehe

  • I must say the lead singer looks a bit scary here though. But they sure are great.

  • Ok, it's official. i'm a Cars fan:) i like this song, but my all time fav song from them is title i'm not the one.

  • I always thought this might be their best song.

  • Elliot doing his best Fripp, here.

  • i love the cars and i think they were great live although i never got to see them. I have a question: um the cars were like realy really big right? so why is it that the last 4 live videos i have seen here on youtube has been in small venues (small for a band that has sold millions and millions...)? like i woulda thought they were playing really big venues back in their heyday no?

  • @bakerbrown6 They played stadium tours in the 80s.

  • @bakerbrown6 ....I think most of what you see are the "Midnight Specials".. I saw them at a sold out Hartford Civic Center show..they ROCKED...

  • @bakerbrown6 They had "a bunch" of top ten hits and were definitely big for, I would say almost a Decade. Definitely a great run. They had A LOT of FM air play in the early 80s. Plus, the appealed to many different types of people.

  • @bakerbrown6 This performane was televised across the entire US. Big enough for you?

  • @bakerbrown6 wow:-) awesome!!!!

  • man that blue suit is the shit!!!

    .

  • @msgigi100 so is the keyboardist's haircut!

  • @bakerbrown6 I saw them live in Omaha, Nebraska at the stadium in 1978...........when all their hits were like number 1.......they are truly an underestimated band. They were just as good "live" as any video, MTV, etc.

  • @bakerbrown6 man things were a little different in the 80's. i would assume that this is just for a TV appearance. they had these types of shows back then. MTV was just getting popular and a lot of bands would make appearances on smaller shows but it would get them exposure. yea they played arenas but could also do this stuff. got to remember there was no internet for this kind of exposure. you actually see it more with 70's bands. these guys were late 70's early 80's. this song was 81.

  • @bakerbrown6

The Cars were the best band of their era, their music stands the test of time, it can be played today on almost any type of radio stations and sound brand new. Rock Legends.

  • @bakerbrown6

The Cars were the best band of their era, their music stands the test of time, it can be played today on almost any type of radio stations and sound brand new. Rock Legends...

  • @bakerbrown6 the cars did play monster concerts. I did concert security in the 80's seen a million people and met alot of musicians. The Cars played in front of crowds exceeding 40k people, easy. My band "12th street gypsys" is working on our version of Just what I needed. If everyone subs me, I will keep you updated when the video comes out. We do take requests as well

    Adam \m/ \m/

  • @bakerbrown6 They did a lot of TV appearances such as Fridays, SNL, Old Grey Whistle etc. which had small studios so many videos on youtube come from those appearances which I personally love because it really shows what great musicians they were. Those big venues are not good for music quality.

  • @bakerbrown6 Boston was all about the clubs.

  • @bakerbrown6 This particular video was on ABC's "Fridays" late-night program... a short-lived competitor to "Saturday Night Live". The Cars were the musical guests. They have headlined at many large venues and they are one of the most notable eligible exclusions from the R&R Hall of Fame.

  • @bakerbrown6 not every body jumped on the band wagon until the 4th or 5th album...

  • she can leave any time

  • 8 people have thrown it all away

  • The dead sleep in death while only the living are aware of their spirit.

This is why Christians believe in a resurrection for those who truly appreciate God's loving kindness.

  • @BonerMaroner You can't have Boner in your name if you're going to post comments like that; it's

    just wrong!

  • Weak.

  • Great band....2 great lead singers.....

  • 8 people took the big vacation....

  • """cries""" Benjamin I miss you "since you're gone" can't help it I'm sad:(

  • This might be The Top 3 Bands of all Time... Hit after Hit after Hit after Hit... and 50 more

    The Cars are EPIC

  • Ric's got such a unique voice; and the CARS awesome sound and Benjamin orr OMG dark hair agaahhh

  • Some think Ben was the best singer, some think Ric was the best singer. I think they worked the best as a duo much like that of Lennon/McCartney or Daltrey/Townshend. I think that sort of contrast made their songs great because both guys sang differently but great.

They're both great, and the band isn't the same when one of them isn't there.

  • The Car stated in an 2011 interview that they decided not to hire a new base player.. because it just wouldn't be the same to replace Ben. RIP Ben!

  • this is the fucking best

  • Sweet.Thank you.

  • orgasmic bass <3

  • Y U no got blonde hair Ben?

  • I love what rachelsonfire said about Ric. So many people make fun of his looks, but if you ever really look at him, he's got gorgeous eyes, and a beautiful smile and his lyrics are just so incredible. I catch myself in all of his videos just waiting to see if he'll "flash a fragile smile", its incredible when he does smile. He's got a gentle speaking voice, and I truly think he's shy and uncomfortable being in the spotlight on stage. I've never heard lyrics like he writes anywhere. Ben + Ric #1

  • This song is no longer about a woman, and now about a point in time - smoky bars, simple stages, no autotune, no samples, music that didnt suck...

  • nice band ! my favorite

  • I love that classic smile at 2:45

  • That blue guy sticks out like a twig in a pile of branches

  • YEAH! the cars live. that rhymes with give not jive.

  • Best band ever!! Loved their songs, clothes and BEN!!

  • Rick's blue suit: No can do.

  • Love The Cars, but if it weren't for Benjamin Orr, that would have been one ass ugly band. He was hot enough for all of them.

  • @hollyawoods lol. No doubt

  • @hollyawoods LMAO soooo true!!!!!!

  • I will bundle Elliot up and take him home with me. I hope he likes Reese's pieces.

  • There is no Death, as some people expect it.

We only move on, or cross over

Your physical body will grow and wilt and disappear like a flower.

    But your essance continues on............

See you on the other side if I don't meet you on this plane of existence.

because I want my afterlife to involve Cars fans!

You guys are the tuned in type I love to associate with. Rock on!

And keep exploring the YOUniverse inside you.

  • @IVatworky Beautiful statement -- The dead live on because the living carrying them.

  • @IVatworky I'm with you dude. No death in me or the Cars music

  • @IVatworky

Oh that was nice. Thank you

  • @IVatworky awesome cars have always rocked, hit after hit, best band ever

  • @IVatworky awesome cars have always rocked, hit after hit, best band ever.

  • @IVatworky I agree ; such a beautiful statement; thank you:)

  • @IVatworky ROCK ON ,,,,,,ROAD DOG!

  • fucking love the cars, most under rated band ever

  • @odeball22

They were rated pretty highly actually

  • Benjamin Orzechowski was Russian and Czechoslovakian :)

R.I.P Ben we will always love you <3

  • I just blocked and deleted a commenter for being an asshole and calling me names in a message because he didn't like my response to his bonehead comment.

Don't post stupid and offensive comments on my videos!!!

  • @paintdiva -this was a hilarious response to whatever was written by the "bonehead"....love it, and thanks for posting this video...so fun to watch-the music lives on! bravo!

  • @paintdiva Why don't you just disable the comments on your video's?

  • @krit5 Because most youtubers/cars fans are having a good time here and I can moderate. There's a lot of comments here!

  • @paintdiva Well, I will leave a nice comment. *grins* I love the Cars and have loved them since I was a kid. Thanks for posting this. I can listen to them on my records but it's great to see them in concert. And it's also great to be able to post this comment. I disagree with the commenter who says you should disable commenting. People who do that are so anally retentive.

  • Why is it always their pop songs that become singles, but their rock songs only become radio hits? Although this song has sort of has a mainsream rock sound.

  • I have always loved them...it's the music of today 2011...you gotta admit ..this is a huge influence

  • Ben Orr likes like a young Emilio Estevez

  • This song could be about missing anyone. It isn't necessarily about losing a lover,. It is ambiguous and it can be about missing/ hurting the loss of a close friend.

So beautiful and cuts me to the quick EVERY time. I love it.

  • @nellielab Indeed!

  • Great song! Hey, dosen't Ric pitch for the SF Giants in his spare time?

  • the lead guitar is a lil out of tune

  • @meanbeats A little??

  • That pretty much says it all.

  • In the first few seconds Ric looked like an 8 foot tall Jeff Goldblum.

  • One of my fav cars songs!

  • I really love The Cars.

  • Such a cool, clean performance of one of my favorite Cars songs. Great musicianship.

  • and i tought i was Skinny

  • They really rock in this video.... Ric, Ben and Eliott...!!! I love thoses days and really miss theses guys!!!!!!

  • @sweetpea3339 What's to miss? New album out and currently on tour. Sad that Ben is not still with us but I'm still looking forward to seeing them on Thursday!

  • @swise63 You sound like a "NEW" Cars fan! BEN???? RIC???? Where were you!

  • @sweetpea3339 Where was I? I was seeing them play the Rat in Kenmore Square before they ever released their first album.... where you you? Besides I think Todd Rundgren was in The New Cars, not Ric (or Ben)....

  • @sweetpea3339 By the way, saw them this past Thursday night and they were amazing. Obviously Ben was missing but Ric sounded amazing, even singing lead on Ben's old songs. But even with just the foursome of Ric, Elliot, Greg and David they nailed it. New album is awesome and all the old stuff was spot on.

  • @swise63 OMG I did not know Ric was singing with them again.I have to go see them. It must have been a great show!

  • @sweetpea3339 The tour for the new album is over for now I think -- they only did like 20 dates. But at least get the new album if you haven't yet!

  • @swise63 Well I hope they tour again soon, and will buy the album immediately. Thanks for the info!

  • @sweetpea3339 It was , I was at the one in Roseland

  • @THECARS7879 me too! excellent show....!

  • smiling and embracing your viewers is MORE cool. Love Benjamin.

  • My favorite Cars song ever!!!!! And I love Ric in all his awkwardness. I can see how he got a supermodel wife. Seriously. Hot chics do dig nerds.

  • @littlewingmel: they both have a lot in common - Eastern European roots for one.

  • Damn, that's nice.

  • OMG whose the Videographer. Goes to the key board on Elliott's Classis Lead. Unreal!

  • Rick and that Gibson les paul sounds so smooooooooooooooth!!!

  • @dogdaisymax I beleive that is a Dean ML Ric is Playing

  • @Rev1Kev Yes you are right, but i was talking about the lead guitar.

  • Wow, I was only 7 years old when they played here. My dad had the vinyl and we spun the hell out of it. I remember my first album purchase was Heartbeat City a few years later and Coast to Coast hardware. Thats right, a hardware store that also sold records.

  • Long live the Cars!

  • rick o looks like a character out of an anime, like a robot android vampire zombie priest angel torn between heaven and hell and out to redeem the universe with his six string ax

  • What a fuckin great song.

  • Although they were considered a New Wave/Pop band because of all the keyboards, The Cars had two incredibly kick-ass guitar players.

  • Rick actually Produced Bad Religions Grey Race...Have always been a Cars fan since arcade days....Very cool post ty!

  • better when Ben Orr is singing !!!!!!

  • Love Elliott.......

  • the new songs rock!.... long live the cars!

  • So if Elliot is playing his solo, why is the camera showing everyone else?

  • R.I.P. Ben.............

  • Ric's funny enough for sure, and he's good on everything he sings on - like this song for it's sheer goofiness. But alas, having The Cars without Benjamin is a little like having chocolate chip cookies without any chocolate chips...

  • OMG! Are they playing actual instruments LIVE?! And I don't hear an autotune on the vocals! Something has gone terribly right!

  • I love the intro this song. Very symphonic and classical... This may be a stretch but it reminds me of A Clockwork Orange and some of Beethoven's pervasive presence in that film's unsettling soundtrack. This track here is no different. Why is it so unsettling?

  • ... the moonlight aint so great!"

    A GREAT line.

  • love the offbeat. Classic originality

  • The solo sounds so Fripp. Lovely stuff.

  • If I wasn't able to watch the NBA at night ( Yes, NBA was not shown live in the early 80's) I was watching Fridays! Thanks for the memories!

  • I guess if you went by popularity and sales, The Cars hit a homerun with The Cars, a triple with Candy-O, a single with Panorama, a double with Shake it Up, a home run with Heartbeat City, and a bunt single with Door to Door. If you count the first Greatest Hits, another homerun.

  • ...love that caddy okasek!!!...

  • I love all six albums but I think the first 3 were by far their best true to self works. the last three were more commercial yet more successful (because they were more mainstream) but not amongst my preferred favorites... From what I've heard these new songs are reminiscent of Panorama and Shake it Up ... we will see...

  • klassik 80's....lol the cars!!!!

  • It's absolutely amazing to me how closely the live versions of these songs sound to the studio versions. During that time period, that was not an easy thing to do. The Cars were incredibly gifted musicians and are sadly underrated. This music was the soundtrack to my life in the 80's. I even went back and "discovered" their earlier work after hearing "Shake It Up". I envy anyone who had the chance to hear them live. And by the way Ben was the classiest bass player ever, rest in peace.

  • This is the best Cars song of all.

  • The Cars...One, if not the best band of the 80's...Went to third base for the first time while this song was playing....Those were the good old days!!!

  • elliot was just a little under the note on those ending bars. but still, another stellar cars performance. the best band of all time... sorry beatles, but you never saw these guys do a twist n' shout cover.

  • Attention Cars fans! New Cars song!!!! Check out "Blue Tip" preview on the The Cars Facebook page~ Too cool for words

  • @relztrah Hey! 60 seconds of "Blue Tip" is better than everything by Green Day.

  • @paintdiva lolol so true

  • @relztrah Their Pinnacle was not Heartbeat City. Their Pinnacle was Cars & Candy-O. Their two best albums by far. They started going down hill after that. They had other great songs on their other albums but they were no way near their first two albums. Not even close.

  • @LesSmith45: Though their commercial peak was indeed Heartbeat City, I would agree that their earlier stuff, as a whole, was best. My favorite Cars albums would have to be Candy-O and Panorama. I actually like every single song on every album except for Door To Door.

  • @relztrah Not me, I can't wait for the tour. I've been waiting for this for the last 23 years. Don't speak for me, I think Blue Tip would have fit in nicely on the Shake it Up LP.

  • @relztrah I was actually disappointed when I saw them in '84 by then Hawkes was relying more heavily on sequencers, digital synths, and computers rather than his typical "Performance Art" style of tweaking the old analog synths during the piece. Don't get me wrong, I liked Heartbeat City, but I would say their Pinnacle was Candy-O, all of their other albums after that had great songs, but seemed to lack that cohesiveness of their first few albums.

  • @relztrah lol the song isn't that bad. Yea, the first 50 seconds or so sounds like a generic Atari bleeping video game, but once the main riff kicks in the song is good.

Each to their own I guess.

It's not bad. Just missing a good intro.

  • @relztrah

i dis-agree bro.... nuff stated here ...now shut TFU

  • @paintdiva Agreed. The new song snippets (including "Sad Song") sound fantastic. Sounds like Ric and the boys are dead serious about giving the fans a kick-ass new album!

  • @paintdiva

Just heard the new Cars album. Very pleased!!!

  • Ricky O is such a classy guy. Elegant demeanor, dark shades almost always...this forlorn, gaunt character seems rather sombre and aloof....he's created his own kind of beauty. Silent and cool..we rarely catch him smiling. I could never tell if it's out of confidence or shyness/insecurity. How does a performer make something so reverse work? Performers usually need to do just the opposite to survive..smile, embrace their viewers..but not with Ric. The epitome of cool.

  • @rachelsonfire That attitude is what made The Cars so cool~

  • @rachelsonfire not only that, but when ben is singing lead he just sits back and plays his parts and doesn't hog the stage. also, he plays the rhythm guitar while well-in not over playing his parts. rick has class.

  • @rachelsonfire You write beautifully.

  • @rachelsonfire it is called leaving them wanting more.

  • @rachelsonfire

Comment! I agree with you totally.

    He's oozes coolness!!!

  • Just a thought Has anyone seen Rick O'Casek sing without his Sunglasses ?

  • The lead singer does the same tippy toe thing that Mick Jagger does.

  • a true band!!

    love the CARS!!!

  • had this lil number in my head for days!!!

  • In fact, anyone who doesn't like this off-the-beaten-path very original song just doesn't appreciate good music IMHO... impossible not to like it...

  • this is one of my favorite cars songs and to hear a live performance is awesome.i used to watch friday's,but i guess i missed it the night the cars played.i wish this type of music would come back.sure beats the crap that is out today.

  • Gosh, I was 9 months old when this was made. I still grew up on their music. I love it very much.

  • They always dressed cool

  • Benjamin, you will always take my breath away... love and miss you!

  • is Ric playing a Dean guitar ? ....i like the click track driving the song >pretty cool...

  • @signalsyyz That is definately a "DEAN CADILLAC". Dean just did a re-issue of "The Cadillac" (circa 1980) but you won't find one that's white - let alone with the unique look of Ric's.

If you listen to this tune on Shake it up, there are really three percussion tracks driving the tune: The Click Track, Elliot Easton playing another close pattern and the live drums. I always hated the fact the Cars stopped using "live drums" for recording after Shake it up! Love this Tune.
