I have enjoyed this organ each summer since 1962 ,when i was 12, today I 60,and am saddened to think it is all gone! My Grandmother and I would set and watch this for a long time. She would be 109 this year. Myrtle Beach was a lovely place ,they have ruined the town and the joy of the beach by removing this landmark. They have other lovely places today. but it will never be as special as it was were it was!
The organ is still in Myrtle beach and is playing again. It's at broadway at the Beach and from what I'm told it plays year round now and for more than 3 hours a day. All of the original music that played on the organ since the 50's has been restored and scanned onto midi and plays again on the instrument. I'm really wanting to go see it again.
Yes, it was near the carousel. If you were looking at the carousel from Ocean Blvd, the organ was back and to the left. In many of my younger years, the organ was not playing; often it was just simply a garage door that was shut...so you might remember seeing that. But, you could see the organ easily from the blvd.
The A Ruth & Sonn German Band Organ has been relocated to The Pavilion Nostalgia PArk located at Broadway at the Beach. It still plays daily and just recieved a $20,000 touch up. It looks wonderful sounds as great as it ever has. The individual that I was talking to, he was doing the work on it, said it was 1 of 2 WORKING organs of this nature left in the world!
Sounds correct except for the "1 or 2" part. I don't know what they mean by that; this is a Ruth model 38; they originally built about 24 of this model, and I know for sure of at least 7 still in existence today. All of them play! As to Ruth book organs, I would say there must be at least over 50 remaining, and fairground organs in general, there are hundreds, of all sizes and makers. All the model 38 Ruth's were slightly different though; this one has an extra-fancy facade.
Wow, nice arrangement, and I guess if this park was going, might as well go out with a bang, eh? I like the larger fairground organs, since lots of notes and registers means there's more potential for interesting things going on, such as near the end of this clip where the organ darn near duplicates the concert band score! (bass: tuba part, accomp: alto horn, trombone: trombone, trumpet and melody splitting the trumpet, clarinet and piccolo parts, and of course the drums filling in)
Although I can't really stand that constantly playing bell ringer. I agree it was a good arrangement. I'm a fan of the smaller Wurlitzers, but they can't play this tune as well as a big organ like a Ruth 38 or a 100-key Wurlitzer Monster (if you haven't heard the Kit Carson "Monster" recording, Art Reblitz did a fantastic job with the score.)

Where was this in the Pavilion? Near the carousel? We went every summer, during the 80's & 90's & I am having a hard time remembering right now =(

It was a nice arrangement; the organ just returned from Ohio (I think) that weekend to be refurbished, so it was definitely sounding great!
