I got 152. It was cheating, using cheats: I was using the Custom Level Code, and the replace cannons with stars; however a star appeared in the Jolly Roger Bay painting room. It was not what the code should do! Plus, no star appeared outside the castle.

How it worked (sorry for my bad English:P):

He used a Action Replay and played the test level. He also used the code: 99 coins. Then get, in the test level, a yellow coin and the star you get, counts for 3 stars. I did the same with my savegame.

I think I know what happened. Cause' there is a glitch where you go into That luigi painting in the boo mansion and get all the red coins except the first one you see. After you get the other 7 , get the first one and two or three stars would appear instead of one.
