SL players doesn't have a big social network and/or intimate relationships in RL, or generally lack social skills, or maybe mental issues. We are all in the same boat, we should just get our RL back on track. Any internet society is for losers/outcasts etc.

If you say that people only stand around in them, you certainly don't know them well enough. Many of their engines allow their users to create games within them, too.

But Second life can be seen as pathetic because it implies that most of these people can't get by in the real world, and so they have to escape into a rediculous world where they don't have to be themselves.
