I am a grappler (Judo & Sambo player) and I've attended dozens of BJJ comps, I got to tell you ... even for a grappler like me this fight was very boring. I like aggressive BJJ (Like the style Renzo & Matt Serra has). I completely understand the entire chess match going on between the two players but it's very boring for me to watch. Maybe because I am used to fast passed grappling as done in Judo & Sambo... but even in BJJ matches, I tend to use fast passed grappling.
de la riva had his guard open for over 5 minuets and nakai didnt even make one solid atempt to pass. If it was ibjjf nakai would of gotten penalized for stalling and as for the giving points it would be one advantage to nakai for the footlock and 2 to de la riva for taking top after nakai released it plus one advantage for almost passing towards the end.
If for some reason it was scored to a tie which i doubt it was i think DLR would of won for pushing the pace in the last minuets of the fight
jajajaja any whitebelt can tell de la riva won by a sweep and 2 advantages.jajajajja how can you say nakai won jajajajajaja. moreover he should have benn penalized for being so passive on top jajajaja
Del La Riva didn't do anything and since he didn't come over the top when Yuki went for the footlock he didn't get points. When Yuki sat on his belly he got the 2 points and advantage for the attack.
Nakai had various training here and there - let's not forget he was already a Shooto LEGEND and absolute BADASS before losing to Rickson. What I've heard is that when competing BJJ he was awarded the blackbelt since that's the level he should be in competition
once he lost to rickson he saw how good bjj was, and trained with rickson for a little while, then he just started training around, and the federation gave him his black belt after awhile
you guys are really stupid . and are posting out of fantasy land. Jiu jitsu is not about how fast u can choke someone, or how fast you can pass the guard. if you wanna see fast things go watch the ufc . this is a battle of technique between to grand masters, not brutality as you guys wanna watch. and in tournaments there is more than submissions as the way to victory , there is also advantages, and points .
This is the problem I see with SO many grapplers having just one type of movement for the majority of their strategy. Its almost as if they depend on it and without it, they seem unsure of other potential options. Why not get head control when someone is squatting like that? Why not shoot for a double foot underhook (butterfly)? Front gi chokes, ankle sweeps-there are soooo many more options than just stalling for so long. I like Mr. DLR but this was not his finest and he did not truly win.
Were I admire de la riva's style, I fight in Judo matches, where I need to be fast or they stand you up. Can anyone recommend some other fighters with fast paced styles I can study?? some of my favorites are the Camarillos, Ronaldo Jacare, and the Wernecks. thanks
man, this is a boring fight. ok, the end is good, but the rest of 80% is boring. no speed. like they do not even want to fight. no disrespect, but with fights like this, bjj will never make it to the olimpic games. vieira's and garcia's fights are way better. much more dynamic. like a fight should be.
De la riva is the man. he has great composure and an unusual style that makes it hard to roll with him. he just ties up your legs and drives you crazy. then he gets side control and submits you with a choke. weird style, awesome jiu jitsu player.
He was awarded his black belt in BJJ by Carlos Gracie Jr. So yes he is a legit black belt. De La Riva is just much better at Jiu Jitsu and that's why he won.
Maybe Nakai is a hero, but he clearly lost this fight. He did absolutely nothing during all the fight. He only tried a foot-lock. Poor guy, he is not aware that de la Riva has an abnormal ankle and cannot feel pain in a foot-lock...
Que luta roubada.........o juiz deu 2 pontos p Yuki Nakai da ond !?
Roubadaça !!!!E ainda o Japones so amarrou !!!

Conheci hoje o Mestre Ricardo, n seminário em Aracaju-SE. Uma pessoa admirável, de postura sem igual, um verdadeiro Mestre.
I met the De La Riva today in Aracaju-SE, Brazil. An admirable person, a unique approach, a true Master.

eu sou fão do yuki porque já vi ele lutar várias vezes e só vi ganhar uma. ou seja ele quase sempre se ferra, mas nunca desiste.
ohvtnc 1 year ago
@ohvtnc Ele amarra demais a luta, mesmo o oponente estando com a guarda aberta, ele não faz uma postura ofensiva, então só leva ferro!!

Not to take anything away from the man, but I read that Nakai never had ay formal training in BJJ. So how does he hold a Blackbelt?
kirokyukan 3 years ago
he earned it like most bb's.. he trained bjj hard core after he lost to rickson.... he got his bb from carlinhos
fozzit 3 years ago
So I don't actualy need to attend BJJ classes to achieve a Black Belt in BJJ? How does that work? I'm not mocking anybody, and I really am curious.
kirokyukan 3 years ago
he actually moved to brazil for a bit and trained his ass off.. he got his black belt like everyone else..

no, he was a judo black belt.

He was training way before that. I seen him play in Hawaii back in 93 as a purple belt a few years before he fought Rickson.

what kind of belt did the japanese guy have? Does it belong to anyone of BJJ-belts?
hijodeargentina 4 years ago
Its for the score keepers and judges. Judo uses a blue belt or sash, if the player is not wearing a blue gi.

I think he was asking about the yellow and green belt which as kosenjudo responded correctly, it is for scoring.

Yuki uses a unique posture in guard here, interesting how he stays very low but square in order to avoid the DLRiva guard game.
DLR has crazy flexibility, smart and patient. Yuki had his chances but couldnt quite capilatize.

Well that's a pretty biased observation. A single foot-lock is one more submission than De la Riva went for.
