  • ... If she didn't spend so much time showing off how long she can hold a note for, she might keep in time...

  • yes birds please teach her to sing -.-

  • She actually has an incredible technique. Her voice is harsh, but beautiful. The whole point is that Anthony is suppose to be able to hear her from her window.

  • Her vibrato is good, but my god, this song is not meant for her!!!!

  • "YA GUNNA BUY ONE OR NOT!? MY ARMS ARE SO TIRED!"

  • Johanna was meant to be insane. Right??

  • This was the worst thing I've ever listened to.

  • tbh i think the whole broadway production was just terrilble! ohhh my god my ears!!!

  • This was how certain people sing on Broadway. Fairly high and loud. The Johanna in the movie had a much sweeter, quieter, less vibrating voice, which was great, but would never work on stage.

  • I bet they only picked her as Johanna because of her Vibrato, which is pretty good, she just needed to learn how to not take deep gasping breaths and go all over the place.

  • Wow. When she started singing it was like totally unexpected and she sounds awful. I know it's Broadway and all but she needs to control her voice more.

  • worst Joanna is the history of sweeney todd...

  • She's suppose to sound like a bird. That's why they chose her to play this part. Her voice is beautiful.

  • @sammygirlxoxo1232 but...birds sound beautiful....

  • Please, birds, teach her how to sing!

  • @psychic92 ive been saying that for years!!!!

  • ...Is it bad that I've tried (and succeeded maybe once or twice) to sing the song this way? :3

  • Two things I thought when I saw this firstly...What on earth was that??? and Secondly.....She is crazy and needs to go to a mental asylum lol

  • @PhantomFan1a LOL SHE DID!!

  • If I cannot FLYYYYYYYYYYYYY-- *pushes her off staircase*

Well, guess she was right. She definitely can't fly.

  • In this version Joanna just sounds crazy

and Anthony looks like Ken from Barbie XD

  • Her facial expressions are hilarious.

  • I wonder if there was a purpose behind her singing in this....fashion...even though it's not my cup of tea she is skilled- remember it may have been the director telling her to sing a certain way xD

  • "BIRDS, WHY ARE YOU SINGING? WON'T YOU TELL ME? WHY WON'T YOU TELL ME, BIRDS?!!?!?"

  • @AkanemaruNayuchi Bird: 0.o

  • Wow! this is such an interesting interpretation! I wonder how it compares to sondheim's original intentions! it's a much darker way of performing this song unlike the overly fragile performances you normally get, probably not of any interest to you "RENT" and "Wicked" fans lol but I feel this is a stunning performance, it's so unhinged! very convincing

  • @20hawk This is actually from the "first few years run" (or close to it) of Sweeny Todd in the 1980's. The original production was very dark and comic...which we were lucky enough to see (many times). This singer replaced J. Barker who sang the song and part very similarly, over the top. Listen to the orginal Broadway cast CD with A. Landsbury and Len Cairou...who is the "best' Sweeny for me.The production, over the years, has lost it's hard and dark edge and gotten too melodic for me.

  • @MsCemmi I have to correct myself. I also saw Sweeny Todd with George Hearn and he had a great voice and wonderful stage presence...tough call but now I'm leaning to GH.

  • This kinda makes me wonder why people like her are actually allowed to be in shows like this, it kinda defeats the point of being a good performer. I mean, this isn't nice to listen to, I'm an aspiring musical theatre singer and part of me thinks what the hell is the point of paying 9000 pounds a year for a 3 year musical theatre training course when they let people like her onto the stage? Sigh.

  • its like she sings like Fiona from shrek and blows the bird up XDDDDD

  • Carlotta Giudicelli (aka, prima donna) from Phantom Opera comes to mind...

  • is this a parody? she's out of tune and out of rhythm, not to mention the vibrato that sucks. : )

  • this vid sucks!

  • I don't know why people are being so harsh. Sweeney Todd is commonly done in opera houses all over the world because it is (obviously) very operatic. It's SUPPOSED to be like this. The show is meant to be done by those who are actually trained in music and theatre Betsy Joslyn is brilliant. For those of you who are comparing to the film: I consider the film to be a totally different thing. Tim Burton cut vital songs that helped the show breathe, and the actors were a mess vocally; very amateur.

  • @ai133n7 no shit, sherlock

  • She was a terible Johanna, but Hearn's AMAZING preformance as Sweeney made up for it...

  • ....I like the 2007 version better.

  • SHE"S SOOOOO SHARP!!!!!!! SORRY PERFECT PITCH I CANT HELP IT!!!!

  • Actually looked this up worried that perhaps I was a little harsh when describing this song in the original Sweeney Todd movie to someone. I am no longer worried.

  • To be fair, nothing about this version is really good. For example, love Angela Lansbury, but I don't enjoy her version very much. I have little love for the original Broadway cast. The concert version is the best version, hands down.

  • @Sasoriscarecrow Yeah every time I listen to Angela Lansbury as Ms.Lovette I'm just like uggh Mrs.Potts what the hell......

  • And.. her face turned purple towards the end xD

  • @OfficialTobiasRagg They also took out Johanna's part in the Johanna quartet, which really drove me crazy. They shouldn't have removed 'Kiss me', or the scene where Anthony and Johanna meet. Tim and Sondheim reached the agreement that it needed to speed up, but by speeding it up they sort of 'killed' Anthony's romance with Johanna, which is a real shame.

  • FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! Johanna is supposed to be insane! She's been locked up from the world with a perverted old Judge who is clearly romantically infatuated with her, She has barely any interaction with the outside world. Plus, Sondheim himself had the final say, and she was on Broadway, so she must be very good, which she is.

  • poor bird...

  • @MargaridaDeCarvalho i am ROLLING!!! this comment made me laugh so hard on top of what the video had already done

  • my ears hurt!!!!

  • She's supposed to sing to the birds, not kill them

  • Well, she was on Broadway alongside Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou, so, she must have been doing very well.

  • How many times can one person be sharp in a song? My goodness... How she was allowed to go on singing like this for paying audience members is beyond me.

  • I SAW HER GO CROSS-EYED!!!!!!!! And this a musical not an opera!

  • I don't get it.. she is intentionally doing all these things with her voice you guys... TEACH me how to sing....

  • This is an absolutely TERRIBLE rendition of this song.

  • wow from sweeney todd the new one this one scared me

  • I understand the depth and meaning of this song but that can still be reached by not over singing not necessarily softer, but with a lighter tone which would show the characters age better a full voice like this resembles someone much older than 16

  • @OfficialTobiasRagg Kiss Me is my favorite! I was so sad! It also cheapened her relationship with Anthony by not letting them meet and develop feelings.

  • @OfficialTobiasRagg It's a good thing some of us are intelligent and understand the depth of this song... I enjoyed the movie, but I hate how it killed a lot of the intelligence of the show...

  • uhm.

  • I don't think everyone here understands this song... the Johnny Depp movie really killed Sweeney Todd. Johanna is supposed to be completely insane, as is most of the characters in Sweeney Todd. This girl has a beautiful voice, she's just acting the role.

  • 1:20 his expression " Oh shit......."

  • @sasoriscarecrow mm, true true, but i was reponding to another comment, which say that she has a strong singing voice like the other johanna in the origanl movie

  • Like a woman possessed!! Hahahahaha! Couldn't be any worse!

  • oooooo god she is all over the place...all over the place

  • wow. that woke me up a little

  • how do you know if she's like the original johanna when the original film isn't a musical??

    V

  • Comment removed

  • @2009adez Those are two COMPLETE different adaptations, dude. Please don't mistake it for the musical. The musical and movie are completely different. In the musical, the victimize Sweeney, but in the movie he is just ape-shit.

  • o.o

  • You can fly, so please... do not sing :)

  • 1:20 xDDD

  • ok i know its weird but...she have a good voice!

  • How can he fall in love with that? O_O' I think she overdid the crazy... Even if it supposed to be there. She's destroying the beautiful song. :(

  • What's the name of this screamer?!

  • The movie is muuuch better

  • I am going to apologize to my voice teacher for any moment where I even remotely suggested vowels aren't important when singing. Every time she said "lark" I just about screamed from the heinousness of it all. D:

  • I dont think Anthony came to see her singing, more to see what was dying in the street and making a strange noise.... lol jk

  • @HunterjumpTheMoon LMFAOO! sooo trrrruueee XD

  • Apparently people don't realize she's supposed to be the comedic relief. Hah.

  • @beanie021 In my opinion she is not supposed comic relief, she and Anthony are supposed to be representing the purity in the word and all she is representing is craziness.

  • @Musicalmaina She is SUPPOSED to be?? That was the intent of her character in the original stageplay actually so...

  • The Johanna on the Broadway soundtrack with Angela Lansbury and Len Cairou is SO much better.

  • holy shit o.o

  • holy shitttttt my ears D:

  • holy sh*t.... this was my face ---> O.O like for real.... i think im gonna need therapy

  • That is a really heavy vibrato

  • ...I like it..

  • oh my god D:

  • What a F***!!!

  • Yes, because someone forced to live with the man who raped her now presumably dead mother and sent her father away, the same man who also very plainly wants to sleep with her, forced to stay inside almost all of the time if not all the time, would be a confident, plucky, mentally healthy young lass who wasn't even a little bit stir crazy or full on crazy. Okay, that's my little rant, but I really like this interpretation. I think another part of it is people just aren't used to soprano voices.

  • this is obnoxious

  • holy freak. I used to like this song.... but I can't unsee that.

  • omg.

  • I am ten shades of jealousy over her voice. I wish I was a soprano. But noooooo, I'm somewhere between alto and soprano.

I used to not like this song because of the craziness in how she sings it, but then I learned Johanna is supposed to be crazy, lol. After listening a few more times, now I love it. XD

  • She scares me..

  • @liiSa15hvh

1.22 he looks pretty scared too XD

    sorry for my bad english

  • I saw this version of Sweeney about 10 years before the movie version was made, my two friends who introduced me to it warned me ahead of time about the lady singing this song and her version of it. And even then? I don't think I was prepared for it.

In fairness though, I do like her version of "Kiss Me" from this show, and she's fine in the Johanna Quartet. It's just Green Finch that's . . . yeah . . .

  • @LadyNewhampshire Actually . . . Betsy (the woman singing) was picked because she happened to be dating George Hern - the man playing Sweeney in this production - at the time. This was a recording of the touring company of the show. The original Anthony and Johanna from the Broadway show were changed in this production, though you can still hear them on the original cast recording album of the show.

Betsy's bad vocals on this song are rather notorious really.

  • can we just look how pitchy she is?!?!

  • johanna was supposed to be kind of insane, that's why she sounds "crazy"

  • She's amazing, but I don't think she's right for Johanna.

  • LOL! Just a little bit too much vibrato...

  • Was Christina in the hospital? :-DDD

  • wow . . .someone had their morning coffee

  • Folks - I hope you realize the performance here was as the girl was portrayed in the legendary Broadway performances that made it so you even know what/who Sweeney Todd is - she's a bit of a ditz and golly, she sounds like a bird, which was the idea here. Take it in the context of a performance. I saw her live and the audiences loved her over-the-top Johanna.

  • @jumbysmom Over the top is one thing. Going cross-eyed while singing high notes and being incredibly shrill is a completely different matter.

  • O.o

I'm just gonna...go somewhere else now...

  • she sounds like a crazy old lady who has 500 cats at home

  • @NatalieSilverBelz I hate to be that guy, but isn't she supposed to be somewhat crazy? She basically lived with Josef Fritzl.

  • I cant stop laughing haha this is the true entertainment :D

  • she's not even singing notes. Crazy bitch.

  • Dear god this is the most demonic/insane version of Johanna I have EVER seen.

  • I love the way this crazy girl sings and she's hot.

  • My mom couldn't keep a straight face while watching this last night. We have this DvD. xD

  • i think that it could have been done gentler and still have some of that slight insanity come out at the same time...

  • I think they mixed up the names on the casting list..the crazy lady is supposed to be her mother.

  • even the guy that comes in at 1:21 looks terrified O_O

  • @WaterAngel71 That's exactly what I thought when first seeing this.

  • @WaterAngel71

    hahaha

  • This is pretty spot on for Johanna in my opinion. She's going on about how she's going bat-shit being on her own with only her birds for company, so she's venting. It is a bit crazy, but character. If you've seen the rest of the show, you'll note that it's not all this crazy. I love this. The woman can sing.

  • *turns volume down quick*

  • Her expressions are hilarious.

  • Anthony looks like a Ken doll

  • @Alienz401 Omg he does XD

  • omg...... i dont know really what to say, she cant sing, no offense, and WHY is she outside instead of being lock up xD

  • what?????? This woman is a BRILLIANT singer and sings this sooo fucking wickedly!!!

  • I got half way through the video and couldn't finish it. I don't even want to know what lays ahead.

  • Sondheim envision Johanna to be a little insane due to the abuse by the judge. Calm down.

  • Oww

  • Most AWFUL Johanna I have EVER seen. And this is broadway!

  • that bird definately is crowing and screaming. 1:49

  • that bird definately is crowing and screaming. 1:58

  • hahahahahahahahahahaha

    that is all

  • i think she scaring all the birds in the street... poor birds :(

  • lmfaoooo 1:22 .... i'd be that shocked too

  • she sounds fat

  • ...or simply dying.

  • LOL her face at 1:53 - 1:55 xD

Also...she sounds like she's being kicked in the stomach every time she breathes.

  • She starts off good and crashes!

  • ....and the bird dies.

  • and this attracts anthony how.....?

  • LOL. i`m rofling.

  • Her voice is supposed to sound like a songbird's chirping, right?

  • wow, everyone saying she sucks, this was the ORIGINAL production, so most likely this is how stephen wanted it. so back off, its gorgeous.

  • @SuesFtw: Omg, AGREED!!

Her vibrato's pretty insane but holy crap, she sucks! Especially with the cockney accent, Johanna was brought up to be a lady.

Oh God, those high notes!! Somone shoot her!

  • i don't think she's 16 in this video...

  • Did Ms. Lovett Decide she should be Johanna?

  • Her singing is actually good; she just doesn't really have the right voice for the part..

  • Uhh....not to be mean but she does not fit the part of Johanna (in my opinion). :o

  • ok no disrespect to the singer, who happens to be AMAZING, but Johanna is, and especially in this song, supposed to be dainty and soft spoken. afraid to say, good singer. not a good Johanna. maybe prima donna from phantom would be better suited?

  • @luckybottlecap Not to be that type...but this is the original Johanna...approved by Stephen Sondheim...who wrote m/l for this...

Honestly, I think she fits the character perfectly. She's been trapped in this house for 15 years--she IS the caged bird, "maddened by the stars," as it were.

  • She's so off-key!! And why does she keep crossing her eyes? There's no emotion to this song what-so-ever either...

  • i loved this song until i listend to this .....

  • SHIT!! KILL IT WITH FIRE!! Johanna got possessed by a demon!!

  • this song is originally supposed to be operatic not bright...the girl in the movie sings it wrong

  • @navyluvr08 says???

  • @danefritz2006 says Stephen Sondheim, the man who wrote and composed it himself

  • @navyluvr08 ive never heard him say that. but i may be wrong. but i feel as if this is just a bit much. plus she doesnt control her top notes. and she is a bit old.

  • @danefritz2006 i agree she is too old for the role so thats probably what makes people think her voice is too mature for it which it is but it is supposed to be operatic

  • She started having an asthma attack near the end there...

  • Read the comments god like @LiahLovesCheer2013 I TRULU CAN'T STOP LAUGHING xDD

  • wow all of you guys are stupid. who ever said anything about her sining, this play is older then you, and just cuz you guys watch the remakes, and not the originals. the play in my opinion is way better then the re make so to everyone else, fuck you.

  • SHE GAVE ME A HEADACHE!!

  • OH GOD, PLEASE SHOOT HER DOWN WITH LIGHTING!!!

  • i almost busted a gut laughing!!!

i read the comments first like i always do and those got me all riled up to listen to her... i couldnt breathe, i was laughing so hard.

she looks about 30 years old, i didnt know Johanna was the age of my mother.

@martha3361... Anthony's reaction had me gasping for air, i laughed so hard!!!

when wever you are feeling down, you sure as hell can watch this to make you happy again.
