My dad's a huge fan of Wilco. I knew and liked a song or two, but wasn't really a fan until I looked through some lyric books and saw that "Took the guitar player for a ride/never once been satisfied/thinks he owed some kind of debt/took him years to get over it" line. Recognized it instantly as "amphetamine" by RFTT and Pete Laughner, and vowed then and there to get to know Wilco. now I'm a fan too.
This was back when Wilco was amazing. Jay Bennett can not be replaced... now they just come out with this mellow stuff that is just waiting to be placed in the next Toy Story movie. I miss the real Wilco... the Fillmore in 97, wow. Being There, wow. I think they are still riding that wave!
I could be wrong, but it doesn't look like it. 4th verse cribs the lyrics from the 1st verse of Amphetamine & the verse melody is a total lift. Thing is, who ever heard those old Rocket recordings? most of which were never 'officially' recorded. I see it as a rather nice homage, but it would be nice to think Laughner was given his due for the inspiration. Maybe that's the point tho. It's a music fan in-joke. Spot the obscure reference, claim 100 kudos points & go home happy with yourself...
illman76, I would rather introduce people to Peter Laughner (great writer!) and Rocket From the Tombs (great band!) than keep things to myself for the sake of in-jokes and some elevated sense of music-nerdiness. Today, you hear a lot of people complain about a lack of good music. There's more good music than ever before (old and new), but it can be harder to find to due to changes in the industry, and when people keep good things to themselves, it doesn't help.
It doesn't let you listen to the new record any more... all the other albums should play when you click the songs. If not your browser might need a plugin or something.
Best Vocal Performance Ever :O ! But the rest of the band does not follow Jeff..

Just my humble opinion. ;)

Hi TCC. I agree with you entirely and think it's a shame that Laughner wasn't credited in what is a fairly blatant lift of melody & lyrics.
illman76 2 years ago
@illman76 Laughner is credited on the album's liner notes and has been ever since it came out

Judging by the fact that no one is dancing or rocking out or anything, it's got to be England or New York.
