FFVII - Midgar Zolom - Earliest/Lowest Level Beta

i remember using beta to destroy all my enemy's for quite a bit of the first disk. i still have my copy of FFVII and it is the BEST game of ALL TIME!!!

This is too hard lol , i have my party Cloud lvl 21 Barret Lvl 20 and Aerith lvl 20 but i always die when he uses Beta .

Excellent fight for such a low level, though I have to say one thing. I notice that your "Enemy Skill" option is disabled, probably because it's empty. At this point in the game, you should at least have the "Matra Magic". It is available right after you exit Midgar, you get it from those big mechanical things just outside the city. Used to be my first priority every time I exited Midgar when I was playing FF7 back in the late 90's.

oh and in my case, i somehow found out that the Zolom always kick party member(s) who inflicted the most damage... so i avoid attacking it with the Enemy Skill holder. at some chance, the Zolom bite too after doing it's Beta...

To those who are wondering why Midgar Zolom sometimes takes double hits from the Poison spell, make sure you have you're battle speed set to the highest and make sure that you set the ATB to ACTIVE.

Failed this on my first try due to the exact same issue (had ATB on Wait), got it on my second try with the ATB set to ACTIVE.

Haha, nice work!. I just leveled to get Fire 2 and beat him using that (this is right after Kalm for the first time), although he kicked the char out who had it, so I had to wait to get limit breaks and then just heal every other round. It was pretty effective....didn't get beta though, that's the next step. Just a little tough with chars around 700 HP...but I, like you, like the challenge.

@juliowashere it happens occasionally during the battle with the midgar zolom every time he uses a counter attack. it happens once after he kicks someone out of the battle, and then again after he uses beta. once for the counter and again for the upcoming turn.

Hmm... whats the deal with the poison damage at the end? Is that a glitch? I just did this with lv 15/13/13 characters, and after Beta he -ALWAYS- gets a physical attack in. No "maybe", its a 100% shot. And he is poisoned, but he never takes that much damage in a row.

Well done. I just got beta at single digits lvls on all characters and used a similar strategy, but used cloud/nanaki/aerith.

You have to back row everyone, and put everyone in sadness to make it work. It doesn't hurt to have everyone come in with limit gages full either, though you clearly didin't need it.

yeah.....can you share some knowledge....I have my team on a min lvl of 18 and up and I gave barret the Talisman, fire on his armor, and sadness......I still get pwned in one attack from beta. in this video he hits 400 somthing, when I get hit it knocks off 800-900 dmg and I die from one beta on Full health. Aeris has higher spirit and I think Cloud's spirit-HP ratio is best (haven't played 7 in a while). With Fire--Elemental linked on your armor, Beta shouldn't hit higher than 500. You can equit a Talisman, that boosts spirit, as the acessory to enhance your defenses agaisnt Beta, as Beta is a magic attack. I killed Zolom learning Beta at level 15. Try to finish it off with a Limit from Cloud, for some odd reason, if I don't use a Limit Break, it sometimes fires two Betas in succession, killing me

@xRaize9593x put your characters in the back row, give them all sadness, and use the 'defend' command with the character who's wearing the enemy skill materia just before the zolom casts beta. also make sure that character is wearing the talisman and using the elemental-fire materia combination. all of these factors reduce the damage to a point at which your character can survive the attack.

If you got the Elemental Materia from the mayor in Midgar you need to equip it on one of your characters in the armour slot, and attach it to a Fire Materia. Since Beta is a fire spell you will lessen the damage you take otherwise death is almost guaranteed.

The reason he does this is because Beta is a counter attack, not his actual turn, so he casts Beta then goes ahead with his actual turn and kills you.

Defend lasts until the character enters another command. Fury doubles the rate your limit gauge fills and reduces the accuracy of your attacks. It doesn't reduce defense or increase the damage the character takes. Hope this answers your questions:)

This requires alot of luck for him to die when he does, Sometimes he will cast Beta with 1000/1500+ Hp left and this tactic will not work as one melee attack will kill you and he won't die to poison quick enough. Every time I have attempted this he has survived at least 2 more turns then killed or tailed my remaining party member.

Still a good job but ever so lucky.

So to counter this I wait for him to go down to 130 ish hp so i can attack, wait for him to counter with beta then one poison will kill him. So I try to do that and the poison hits twice and he dies before I can attack, so gay

Seems like you don't have Sadness status then. It reduces damage by 30%. You can buy Tranquilizers in Kalm.

Also, the regular attacks deals 80 damage thanks to Defend.

(This aint a low lvl party) When RED XIII atks the damn Serpent it uses beta (as youre guide tells me) However I dont get the Zolom to low health but my Barret survives the attack.. But Explain this: Why doesent Barret do anything when I tell him to use Hi-Potion right after the damn Beta? I mean he doesent move or nothing he just takes a hit from the zolom bitch and dies. Well, there are 4 E-skill materia: Popped out of Sample: HO-512, inside the Junon "Respectable Inn" (you know, the tutorial room), inside the City of the Ancients, and found on the Chocobo Sage's chocobo. Though, it's not like you really need even 4 people with Beta, Trine, Pandora's Box, Shadow Flare, White Wind, or Big Guard anyway, even against Bizzarro-Sephiroth ;).

Good video. My strategy was a little bit different. I didn't have anyone use sense so it was kind of hard for me to determine when to finish the monster off. I just basically had one character get knocked away and had another character immediately attack the MZ to trigger beta. As soon as it used beta, I had Cloud use his limit break to finish it off. Either way, tomato, tomatoe, it's the same thing.

Garland, the only problem I'm having is I didn't bother getting Elemental material in the Shinra HQ, I just bashed all the options mindlessly to be presented with a Potion. If you don't have the Elemental Materia, you have two choices: either learn Planet Protector with Aerith (kill 160 enemies with her) or wait until you get the Fire Ring in Costa del Sol. Take note that you cannot return until you have the buggy.

You can't get MBarrier until Rocket Town, so that's out of the question. In Costa del Sol, you find the Fire Ring, which makes Beta deal 0 damage.

btw, damage calculation with sadness:

Dmg 2 = [Dmg 1 - (Dmg 1 x 79/256)]

Meaning if original damage (dmg 1) is 400, it'll be dmg 2 = 400 - 123 = 277.

Lowest Level or Lowest Average Level? If it's the latter, Barret is at level 8, with (for comparison) Cloud at 10 and Aeris at 9. Youd have to make sure Barret gets as much HP and Spirit as possible (not sure if Aeris' higher Spirit makes up for her low HP. Probably not), and even then you might have to add a level. I'm sticking close to LAL myself, and I got Beta after the Fire Ring. There was never a time when I wished I had Beta, as Limits and Right Arms still did enough damage at that point.

Yep. It was actually the lowest damage Beta dealt in the four battles I fought. It killed me once and dealt 427 twice, so that Barret only had ONE HP left :D
