I am searching for inspiration on such a device as I have an old clock coil to rewind.I'm looking at making a DIY, coil winder and like your traversal system.
What code does it you.Can you share it with me as it's shows to be very useful.
Very Cool, have you tried this with really fine wire? Like the kind of magnet wire they use for guitar pickups, 42 guage I believe? I like the idea of using the nylon screw as your guide, very clever. I suppose one could even wrap the screw in teflon tape to make fine wire glide even better. I'd be interested in the code too. I need to wind a pickup for a buddy of mine and I think I'll use my lathe as a winder but I still need a way to traverse smoothly. What did it cost to build? Thanks!
Hi
Just wondering if you have this completed?
I am searching for inspiration on such a device as I have an old clock coil to rewind.I'm looking at making a DIY, coil winder and like your traversal system.
What code does it you.Can you share it with me as it's shows to be very useful.
I will post the results once finished.
Well done!!

BRILLIANT!!!

Where did you acquire the stepper motor and controller? What part number? I am having difficulty knowing what size to use... Thanks, BP

Yep - this was prototype #1 for both hardware and software. I currently have a screw made from solid teflon as a guide, it seems to work very well.
Approximate cost for auto-traversal components:
$25 AVR Butterfly
$20 stepper motor driver
$15 stepper motor
$5? Homemade teflon screw guide
$free sample gear tooth sensor from Allegro
$25 misc components: 4.5v DC power supply components, case, connectors, switches, etc.

VERY COOL! would you share the code for this? I plan to implement a new winder using something similar with an AVR.

Yes, I'll share the code and help you out... as long as you post a You Tube video when it's completed! :)
