Thanks a lot for the video review, it helped me a lot. Now I know that is better to buy a kindle for me. I have a very good notebook, an iPod touch and a smartphone, so it's not worth to spend money on iPad just to read ebooks.
I write children's books and i've converted all my picture books to iBooks, I am wondering in all honesty - your own personal opinion, do you feel kids are truly reading books on iPads? (Kindles, Nooks)
If not now - do you really feel kids, schools, parents, will convert to e-readers? I've a ten yr old and it's a wee bit uncomfortable to hand her a $800 iPad, but I'm wondering if other people feel this way? Would love to hear everyone's reflections.
it's stupid to compare the IPad with the Kindle, as the two are NOT THE SAME CATEGORY. Sighs... Ipad is a full-fledged COMPUTER (tablet). Basically a laptop but with no physical keys (for some dumb reason, but just touch screen only) So it's bound to be more functional and nifty in certain ways. The Kindle is NOT MEANT to be a full-fledged computer situation, but SIMPLY AN E-READER. Basic for that. So videos like this (and those who make them) are being silly and annoying. False premise is why.
@goodereade well, I do understand that in a way. As people do use the IPad for e-reading, and e-books, etc. My point though is that it makes a bit more sense to compare the Kindle with the Nook, or the Sony Reader. As they are all the same situation, and in the same exact category. Whereas the Apple IPad is in reality a full-fledged computer. But even so, some people actually like the Kindle better because they say that LCD is not really good for long close reading, etc. It depends.
@SpeedyRemake It's not stupid to compare the two, though I think the comparison was flawed. The Kindle works great indoors, and it is silly to say that you should get an iPad if you read indoors. That is a completely invalid point. In actuality, the back lighting on the iPad can cause eye strain. In almost all lighting conditions, the Kindle is better for reading than the iPad. You can always use a booklight. A valid point of comparison between the two would have been in reading PDF's.
@SpeedyRemake That is the silliest set of comments I've seen yet. Being someone in the market for one or the other, and having a hard time deciding, I found the review quite helpful. Perhaps you shouldn't be so condescending; we don't all have the same level of knowledge on these devices, and some of us are seeking to learn. Your post certainly didn't offer any insight.
@mksthill I think it did offer some insight with the point that they ARE NOT THE SAME TYPE OF THING TO EVEN "COMPARE" IN THAT SENSE. One is a full-fledged computer (iPad), and the other uh ISN'T. (Kindle). One is mainly just for e-books and e-reading...while the other is basically a laptop with no physical keys. If you're in the market for an E-READER ONLY, then considering an iPad is a bit "stupid" as it's too pricey...and isn't really an e-reader only. (And in some ways lacks what Kindle has)
@SpeedyRemake You are blind if you think that Kindle is not a full-fledged computer. It has a CPU, a RAM, a pretty cool Linux-based OS with Webkit browser, and cool connectivity and battery life. Why not just to use cloud services or hack into internal linux firmware to get the commandline? People have run tcpdump and other cool tools on it already! That marketing shit ("this is a computer, and that is a reader") is for complete n00bs only.
@nrz666 of course ALL these things are "computers" to a greater or lesser extent. I think you may have misunderstood me a little bit. Even though Kindle Fires are "computers", and even Smart Phones are "computers" too, and many cell phones, they are NOT exactly the same same as an actual laptop or desktop computer. I meant it in the context of comparing the Kindle Fire with the iPad. There are DEGREES of "computer", is my point. Kindles are computers, but NOT the fullest types.
@SpeedyRemake This is the very case. You can do most things on both devices (except for video). I meant Kindle 3, not Fire. Why pay more just for color display (-> much less battery life) and for fancy brand for blondies? Want more apps - do it online, you have free 3G and full Webkit on Kindle. Not to mention jailbreak and getting normal Linux terminal instead of some closed firmware.
@nrz666 yeah, I meant Kindles in general, the 3 or the Fire. They're all "computer-ish" to some degree, and I myself have been saying that smart phones etc ARE "computers" in a real sense. But comparing the Kindle 3 (or the Kindle Fire for that matter) with a fuller thing like the iPad is not very fair or reasonable. Because Kindles (right now) and the iPad are DIFFERENT CATEGORIES. Both things are "computers" in a sense, yes, but iPad a bit more so, and is meant more for that.
It's actually not very healthy to read on a LED screen for your eyes. There studies that have shown this. So the comment on this video is wrong. It's not about reading in the sun. It's about your eyes. And by the way you can get insomnia when looking on LED screens for a long time.
I was going to buy a Kindle DX, but after this review, i went online, watched videos and reviews on the ipad and ipad 2. I think I already made up my mind, thank you for this video, it made me realize about some things I didn't take into account. Thanks.
@ocdist When do you read? Are you a vampire or something? Of couse I'm reading in sunlight. Meaybe you dont know what a book is, so let me tell you, that you would need light to read it. If I need a dark cellar to read a book with iPad, I'd rather switch to books. Apple is a criminal organisation. I wouldn't buy their crap anyway.
You can buy books from iTunes to read on an iPad, so it's a perfectly valid comparison to make for potential buyers. Obviously the analysis only needed ten seconds to point out that reading books on an iPad is miles behind the dedicated Kindle and bad for your eyes.
whichever you choose, get it for free! join playbookforfree.co.uk, choose if you want an ipad, kindle or playbook. Do an offer from a well known company such as coral, lovefilm or blockbuster then get other people to join up and do the same. Its that easy!
Bty, iPads virtual keyboard is way fucking better than that little piece of shit keyboard on the kindle. Also an iPad wasn't made for ereading, it's a fucking tablet, I have one, it's amazing.
Even though the kindle is for high light reading, I find that at night a simple book light plus the kindle is just as good and its light design and page flipper on both sides lets me lay down in all sorts of weird positions while reading. The ipad gives me a headache with time, the kindle doesn't since it's just like a book and not a computer screen. If you want to read, buy the kindle. If you want to browse the web and have the abilities a computer possesses, buy the ipad. Simple as that.
This review was correct until it said " If you plan to do most of your reading indoors, we definitely recommend the iPad". Unless you live somewhere without electricity or own no lamps, this is a completely irrelevant statement. If you have enough light to read any kind of printed text, you have enough light to read a kindle.
@buddycowfriendly yeah, but the new Kindles do have color now...such as the Kindle Fire, etc. It was only a matter of time... But even the original Kindles (1, 2, and 3) are very good in themselves still. And of course it's nice that prices have come down in general.... But yeah, Kindle now is color. With better browser too.
The kindle is better for reading in bed while trying to fall asleep. The backlight from the IPad LCD screen will prevent melatonin production which helps us fall asleep.
jesus crhist there comparing the 2 in terms of reading..... if your gonna get one of them to read for 8 hrs a day.... and money isnt a issue... ereader is better cus u wont go blind after a hour
I don't see any problem with comparing the Kindle & Ipad for the task of reading. I thought this video was helpful. I am aware of the difference between a tablet and an ereader. My problem is I need to carry a netbook or tablet anyway, but also read a lot of PDFs, so could I get by with only a tablet rather than carrying both? But for me, reading on a glossy screen such as the Ipad is out of the question, it's completely unnatural, so I guess I'm have to go for a netbook + kindle for reading.

Review is flawed in basics. You cannot compare e-Ink display with LCD iPad. Specially, when he tells us "Pages turn really fast on iPad, as compared on Kindle, but kindle is running on 3G, and page turn will be faster if its on Wifi........." . Its a plain lie. Page turns will ALWAYS be slower on eInk displayes because, eInks and LCDs are diffren technologies, Einks
i Like this Video couse I see right decision in this video.. If you want more multimedia and saxy visual thing It's just Ipad but if you simply love reading books, You have to buy amazon kindle
i also disagree with their comment on the keyboard. I personally have not replaced my macbook with an iPad, and I don't know that i will, but while I like the satisfaction of having physical keys that move and give me positive confirmation when I press them, these people completely neglect to mention the intellitype typing correction that actually means I can type as fast on the iPad screen with confidence that it will correct most of the words.
so if the Ipad and iOS devices have a kindle app that lets you access the full amazon/kindle library, in addition to the ibooks app, google books, and other book apps, then which one has a bigger library? I agree that kindle is better outdoors, ipad indoors, and the e-ink is easier on the eyes. I also think the Kindle is a reader and almost nothing else, while the iPad is a full-fledged tablet PC, though with a slightly limited OS. iPad is the future of computing, however.
@yapameilleur I will get kindle because I don't have space to storage all the books. Regular books are to heavy and to big to have it in my purse or to have more then one,... plus regular books are to expensive for me to buy 1 per week or more. I tried to read pdf on my computer and it is not the best way,...
This comparison is pointless. Selecting the iPad as an alternative to the Kindle makes no sense, one is a general purpose tablet computer and the other is a dedicated ebook reader. The comparison may as well be between the iPad and your local library.
If you do the majority of your reading indoor you recommend the IPAD?
Guys I believe you haven't spent enough time reading from an lcd screen. E-INK is to LCD what Paper is to LCD. There is no use of the IPAD for reading besides the casual type of reading one does when browsing the internet...
Why would anyone refer to an iPad as an e-reader? C'mon, if an iPad is a e-reader, then there's no reason why every laptop/netbook isn't essentially an e-reader (and then some). Oh, and laptops screens stay upright HANDS FREE, too. Enhanced, comfortable readability (offered by e-paper/e-ink) is what makes an e-reader; an iPad just brings another LCD screen. In my book, that goes for the Nook Color, too. It's a dumbed down tablet, with specialty reading software that's also available for PC.
Use a lamp, or one of those reading lights that you can get for the kindle, and you can read in the dark. I'd much prefer that over a blinding LCD screen.
IPad screen has been darkened on purpose. This video tries to discredit the iPad. It actually looks much better as they have presented. Video is a trap.
The ipad is AWFUL at displaying text. Its shockingly bad at it. Its useless as an ereader. Plus the LCD on the ipad will kill your eyes even after an hour of reading.
@soldersucker good to know thank you. not that i was seriously considering it for the price, i guess more like a fantasy gift lol. my only concern is i'm beginning to accumulate more ebooks in pdf format and i don't like the zoom function on the kindle. it's cumbersome to scroll mid-sentence but apparently changing to kindle format takes care of that. but there are also some charts in some of my raw food nutrition books, i wonder how the kindle format will deal with that.
@soldersucker Don't understand why you have 59 thumbs up for this idiotic comment. They're not in competition, if you're using an ipad prodominantly as an ereader you're an ignoramus. If you want to read, buy an ereader. If you want general usage of pc/laptop features in a portable manner, buy a tablet.
The fact this video is comparing the two is completely retarded in itself.
@boreddrummer Um...he has all those thumbs up because that's what he was trying to say. How did you take his comment as saying they were in competition with each other? He said it's "useless as an ereader", and he's right. It is useless, mainly because that's not what it's really intended to do.
This is retarded, how can you compare these 2 products that have nothing to do with each other. The iPad is comparable to a netbook, it's a portable computer with the advantage that you can read on it. The kindle is an ebook, it's just for reading, it's light portable and confortable, even more than the iPad. You won't be able to navigate the internet from it though... so really, what is this review? This makes no sense.
@roblanco he's comparing them as a e-Reader. And iPad came up short for reasons. iPad is trying to be like everything but in fact it's in the middle of nowhere. It cannot replace a laptop if you do more than just surfing or playing games or checking emails. It cannot be a good e-Reader. So what the hell is iPad good for?!?
@roblanco It's comparing Reading Features (considering Getting books remotely, entering information to get books, weight, changing pages, but most of all, reading). I would even consider putting on the side a real paper book to see how it compares (for example how fast is your page changing on a paper book). Never mentioned Angry Birds, Excell or other applications.
@roblanco You're right that asking "which one is better?" is pointless. But if you know nothing about either of these devices, a comparison of their features could be useful, and that seems to be what they do in this video.
@roblanco well...the review was really good for me cause i was thinking of buying the kindle, but i was also thinking.....if im investing over 180 dolars, why i dont invest kind of the double for the IPAD........well thanks to the review i can see is totally diferent and i should get both because the ipad matches a lot of my preferences, but for reading i also need the kindle.
@roblanco because you can show your grandparents the difference. and I dont know if you have a kindle or not, but there IS a browser on it. YOu can surf, and one of the amazing features is the ability to read blogs.
@roblanco because you can show your grandparents the difference. and I don't know if you have a kindle or not, but there IS a browser on it. YOu can surf, and one of the amazing features is the ability to read blogs.
@roblanco The Amazon Kindle 3 has a webkit web browser on it. Not anything fancy, but at least you can check your email, check your Facebook, google stuff, look things up on Wikipedia, etc.
@roblanco Maybe this comparison should have been called "Backlit heavy LCD screen with glare" vs e-ink for reading. This is the point.
I know a lot of people that bought the iPad to use mainly as an e-book reader. They would have learned that the Kindle could have been a better choice for this if they saw this video.

Specially, when he tells us "Pages turn really fast on iPad, as compared on Kindle, but kindle is running on 3G, and page turn will be faster if its on Wifi........." . Its a plain lie. Page turns will ALWAYS be slower on eInk displayes because, eInks and LCDs are diffren technologies, Einks

this is like comparing a computer with a book... i love the battery life and crisp text of ereader

guys, you're crazy... iPad & Kindle were made for different tasks.... and it's impossible to compare it...
P.S. Kindle isn't harmful to our eyes as iPad.)))

YOU CAN TURN THE PAGE BY ACTUALLY TURNING THE PAGE ON THE IPAD!!!! YOU SWIPE!!! DAH!!!!!!!!!!!

AmazonKindle is JUST an E-reader, iPad is a bit more... This compare is totally useless.

It provides international 3G for free but for you have to pay for browsing a lot ! and it is like shit
IaN4ify 11 months ago
fuckin dumbasses. ipad has 3G. HOWEVER you have to PAY prior to USE IT. Kindle provides 3g FOR FREE, and even INTERNATIONALLY.

i also disagree with their comment on the keyboard.
KohenChayil 11 months ago
so if the Ipad and iOS devices have a kindle app that lets you access the full amazon/kindle library, in addition to the ibooks app, google books, and other book apps, then which one has a bigger library? I agree that kindle is better outdoors, ipad indoors, and the e-ink is easier on the eyes. I also think the Kindle is a reader and almost nothing else, while the iPad is a full-fledged tablet PC, though with a slightly limited OS. iPad is the future of computing, however.

Do you like reading? Get a kindle. Do you like doing anything except reading? Get an iPad :)

Why dont you just buy a regular book? Still much better then both of them!!

@yapameilleur
Before I bitch and moan at you. Have you tried a kindle?
Daermonical 11 months ago
@yapameilleur I will get kindle because I don't have space to storage all the books. Regular books are to heavy and to big to have it in my purse or to have more then one,... plus regular books are to expensive for me to buy 1 per week or more. I tried to read pdf on my computer and it is not the best way,...

This comparison is pointless. Selecting the iPad as an alternative to the Kindle makes no sense, one is a general purpose tablet computer and the other is a dedicated ebook reader. The comparison may as well be between the iPad and your local library.

yes, its hard to type fast, when not being able to use your 10 fingers on a virtual keyboard.

If you do the majority of your reading indoor you recommend the IPAD?
Guys I believe you haven't spent enough time reading from an lcd screen. E-INK is to LCD what Paper is to LCD. There is no use of the IPAD for reading besides the casual type of reading one does when browsing the internet...
fardrum 1 year ago
Why would anyone refer to an iPad as an e-reader? C'mon, if an iPad is a e-reader, then there's no reason why every laptop/netbook isn't essentially an e-reader (and then some). Oh, and laptops screens stay upright HANDS FREE, too. Enhanced, comfortable readability (offered by e-paper/e-ink) is what makes an e-reader; an iPad just brings another LCD screen. In my book, that goes for the Nook Color, too. It's a dumbed down tablet, with specialty reading software that's also available for PC.
Shogun1982 1 year ago
you can watch porn on the Ipad. The kindle, only back and white photos
dayman52 1 year ago 2
Pro tip:
Use a lamp, or one of those reading lights that you can get for the kindle, and you can read in the dark. I'd much prefer that over a blinding LCD screen.

IPad screen has been darkened on purpose. This video tries to discredit the iPad. It actually looks much better as they have presented. Video is a trap.
kiermel 1 year ago
The ipad is AWFUL at displaying text. Its shockingly bad at it. Its useless as an ereader. Plus the LCD on the ipad will kill your eyes even after an hour of reading.
soldersucker 1 year ago 73
@soldersucker good to know thank you. not that i was seriously considering it for the price, i guess more like a fantasy gift lol. my only concern is i'm beginning to accumulate more ebooks in pdf format and i don't like the zoom function on the kindle. it's cumbersome to scroll mid-sentence but apparently changing to kindle format takes care of that. but there are also some charts in some of my raw food nutrition books, i wonder how the kindle format will deal with that.
wunderbeast 10 months ago
@soldersucker man I used my iPad all the time, I don't get any eyestrain at all mate
mobtekl 8 months ago
@soldersucker Don't understand why you have 59 thumbs up for this idiotic comment. They're not in competition, if you're using an ipad prodominantly as an ereader you're an ignoramus. If you want to read, buy an ereader. If you want general usage of pc/laptop features in a portable manner, buy a tablet.
The fact this video is comparing the two is completely retarded in itself.
boreddrummer 7 months ago
@boreddrummer Um...he has all those thumbs up because that's what he was trying to say. How did you take his comment as saying they were in competition with each other? He said it's "useless as an ereader", and he's right. It is useless, mainly because that's not what it's really intended to do.
intuit13 6 months ago
@soldersucker Many people read at night or under low light conditions and an e-reader does not work.
goodereader 6 months ago
@goodereader In this case, a regular book doesn't do the job neither.

Whats the storage space on the Kindle DX? How easy is it buy books and add them to the library?
irahc78 1 year ago
This is retarded, how can you compare these 2 products that have nothing to do with each other. The iPad is comparable to a netbook, it's a portable computer with the advantage that you can read on it. The kindle is an ebook, it's just for reading, it's light portable and confortable, even more than the iPad. You won't be able to navigate the internet from it though... so really, what is this review? This makes no sense.
roblanco 1 year ago 69
@roblanco he's comparing them as a e-Reader. And iPad came up short for reasons. iPad is trying to be like everything but in fact it's in the middle of nowhere. It cannot replace a laptop if you do more than just surfing or playing games or checking emails. It cannot be a good e-Reader. So what the hell is iPad good for?!?
Bossiiiii 1 year ago 2
@roblanco sorry but get your facts straight they even say in the video you get free wireless 3g anywhere in the USA and other countries.
lostpunker2 1 year ago
@lostpunker2 Dude I have a Kindle... believe me... it's not really made for browsing the internet.
roblanco 1 year ago
@roblanco that's exactly what interested me to watch this vid. As I watch I hope they realize they can only compare the eReader functions.
youmakeitwhatitis 11 months ago

actually you can surf the internet for free (i am in the UK so i get free wifi) with the kindle 3 as you just go onto menu->experimental->browser!
simples-(i am obsessed with the meercat advert!)
ALEXANDER WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!!woo thumbs up people!!!
(even though this has NO relation whatsoever to the kindle-I had to say that-its simples!
hypasingagal13 11 months ago
@roblanco It's comparing Reading Features (considering Getting books remotely, entering information to get books, weight, changing pages, but most of all, reading). I would even consider putting on the side a real paper book to see how it compares (for example how fast is your page changing on a paper book). Never mentioned Angry Birds, Excell or other applications.
fabulmanxxx 11 months ago
@roblanco You're right that asking "which one is better?" is pointless. But if you know nothing about either of these devices, a comparison of their features could be useful, and that seems to be what they do in this video.
Democritus477 10 months ago
@roblanco Yes, you can navigate the internet on the kindle. FYI

@Gollsodia Yeah I know I havea Kindle, but the browser is still kinda prototypeish. The iPad is a much better medium for browsing the web.

Great review for me
yuyis12345678 9 months ago
@roblanco because you can show your grandparents the difference. and I dont know if you have a kindle or not, but there IS a browser on it. YOu can surf, and one of the amazing features is the ability to read blogs.

@roblanco The Amazon Kindle 3 has a webkit web browser on it. Not anything fancy, but at least you can check your email, check your Facebook, google stuff, look things up on Wikipedia, etc.
DaveyD327 7 months ago
@roblanco Maybe this comparison should have been called "Backlit heavy LCD screen with glare" vs e-ink for reading. This is the point.
I know a lot of people that bought the iPad to use mainly as an e-book reader. They would have learned that the Kindle could have been a better choice for this if they saw this video.
