Healthcare is not my problem. Me and my family have good health care, and it's not my problem if others don't have it. If it's expensive, save your money and don't waste it on crap. Leave Healthecare alone. Palin/ Beck 2012
You are what is wrong with our country. There is no reason that a person should be responsible for tens of thousands of dollars for a simple surgical procedure. That would bankrupt MOST middle income people. It is not right to say - yes, this person deserves to die because they cannot afford preventative care. I don't have insurance, but even when I did have insurance, I would NEVER had denied my neighbor healthcare for all.
No one in this country is denied necessary medical coverage. If a person cannot pay, things are worked out. Lack of knowledge of how to do that is the problem. Here are some facts to digest: There are limited resources as in Doctors, Nurses, Hospitals, Medicine, and time. Those people need to be paid a fair wage and the medicine and research also has a cost. Time is a limitation. If you open the door to make it free for all, there MUST be rationing. Who decides then?
@bytorsgirl The problem is there is scarcity in our system. so the money has to come from somewhere. there is no way of getting around this... but i do agree that a for profit system makes it more expensive. but either way there will be rationing.
@burbonboy Sure. You have good healthcare. Unless you get screwed by a corporation and lose a job. Or someone in your family actually gets sick, and the insurance companies drops you. Far too many people have lived under the assumption that their healthcare was good - until they found it wasn't.
Sorry to break the news to you but you are already paying for the uninsured through your healthcare. The only question is whether your money is being spent efficiently or not. Its not. This isn't to say I support Obama's bill. Without a public option it doesn't do much to stop the price gouging by insurance companies. Of course don't take my word on this, look it up.
Your right - You have every right to be healthy. However we as a society arent responsible to provide you with health care. Unfortunatley the government is going to make sure the heathcare you get .... sucks.
Freedom of speech is a right. Being healthy is not. You won't find it in the Constitution.
But if good honest middle class people are being bankrupted because they cannot afford the latest cancer treatment, because their insurer decides to drop them when the going gets tough, then I say to you...
That just ain't right.
If you fall on hard times through no fault of your own, I'm not gonna say to you, "Hey, tough shit." Helping you when you are down is just the human thing to do, is it not?
Yeah but the latest healthcare reform wont stop that from happening. In fact the government will decide your not worth investing the money into keeping alive.
interesting point. This is working up to be quite the discussion. But i need some clarification. People who live in a democracy can, under the law, pretty much live the life they wish. I'm not sure how this contradicts the fundamental sense of the founders.
Without clarification, I get the sense that you mean that there are people who wish to live in a democracy without having to compromise with anyone or conform to anything whatsoever, like social institutions, and other people in general.
@huckstered "(Health care) is not a matter of politics it is a matter of morality."
__
Do not attempt to tell that to the average Fox-watching conservative Republican moron. They have no morals, though they endlessly tell us how superior their morals are to everyone else's morals. The Republicans -- and their masters the health care corporations -- stood in the way of the most moral legislation in 70 years: True public health care. And all of it was done in the name of politics. ALL of it.
@bapyou Yes. Republican senators are in the pockets of wall streeters, big insurance the, military industrial complex and the likes. The list is too long of
liars and lobbists for this tiny space, as we know. The pitiable thing
about the current political situation is the average republican voter has been manipulated by politicos and Fox and the other conservative owned media
into believing that what the GOP is doing is morally superior and- it is a complete falsehood. Representative Govt.?
@huckstered democraps are ALSO bought and paid for by big business- and liberals have NO political capital because the dems know they will get their votes, and they don't do SHIT for them.
Vote third party or stay home.
Only idiots STILL vote dem or repub.
p.s.- wall street doesn't care if dems or repubs win. It's a shell game.
The more wealth we have as a nation the more individuals can feel that the metaphor should be about me instead of thee. The religious right in this country is about selfishness not about the golden rule. what would Jesus do?
Speaking of Kenndy - He believed in small goverment. He would not stand for a goverment health insurance. He would lower taxes to spur business and in tern jobs. OBAMA is a marxist ass. Myers is just plain stupid. Oh by tghe way the Republicans abolished slavery
70% of healthcare is lifestyle. The American people need to take responsiblity for their own actions. They need to get their act straight and let healthcare go to those who are ill not by their own hand. It's our teaparty gang-lose the 35 lbs, quit smoking, and limit the substance.
Mannheim - I really think your from another planet. Maher and Moyer are brainless idiots. The fact is the "capitalist have a pretty good Health care system. Dupes believe we need to scap it in favor of a mediocre system. I cant people want to keep feeding money to the big Goverment. programs All they have ever done is waste it. Thats not a Dem/Rep issue its just a Big Goverment issue. Moyers is old and stupid.
On Bill's "parallels...between great empires..." (7:16). That also rings true: the capitalists are keeping the ordinary americans busy with a lot of "circus" (...) to keep them from actually digging into the real natures of the critical issues hounding the nation. The whole thing is dissipating the energy of the whole nation, too distracted and rendering them fickle-minded. tsk, tsk, tsk...
I come from another part of the globe. It's quite easy to see that the republicans who're sowing the seeds of confusion & distaste for the healthcare proposal are better at lying. So successful in that craft that they dragged a crowd to washington. Also, there's truth in Bill's comment: "people don't understand enough about this issue to be able to render an opinion." But, that's typical American attitude: so opinionated yet so uninformed (or, ignorant?). The smart ones should make noise. :)
Lazy, unimaginative and dependEnt...? he he he. You seem to have missed the 'current events' for more than a decade. If the americans of the current generation haven't been so lazy, unimaginative and dependent, how would you account for the deluge of talents and professionals coming in from other countries? (And, Bill Gates, appearing in a Senate hearing last year, asked to increase the available work visas!)
We attract those proffesionals because their countries inhibit their ability to perform. You seem to forget that the US is social result of a mixture of the world. It is by nature a "melting pot" and as a result cannot function like a realitive homogenous society like the EU and elsewhere.
The EU is not a homogeneous society. It is by definition a union of varied countries with different cultural histories and indeed many different languages.
Do you have whole sectors of society that have grown large enough to politically control large regions of your country. (aside from the Muslim community of course) I doubt the EU has immigrated communities with such power.
Here in the UK there are no groups which are big enough to control a "large region of the country" That includes the Muslim community, which at the last census is only 4% of the population and is pretty much ignored by politicians apart from grabbing headlines. If you mean the EU then A, the EU is not a country and B, it is can't be homogeneous since it so culturally separated. Again, there is no homogeneity in the 27 nation states that make up the EU
Im talking in realitive terms. In comparison to the US the UK could be considered Homogenous. Like the UK, America many ethnic cultures however very few can be ignored. Southern California has such a large Population of Mexicans it could in theory ceceed back into Mexico. I know the EU isnot a country. France however has a very large Muslim Pop and they actually have comparable strength.
The French Muslim pop is only 10% and since they are mainly poor immigrants then I very much doubt their political clout. It has been inflated only by a global media who like sticking pictures of "angry muslims" on their front page for ratings and politicians who use it to score cheap political points with their base. I very much doubt they have the political power of Mexicans in CA where they are almost 40% of the population.
Like the opinion of most liberals you attack the people instead of the issue. Having a critical thought about an actual issue is just too difficult for someone such as you.
most of the people he wants to bring in are entry level ppl so he can lower the wages of Americans just like letting mexicans in it lowers the wages and increases profits of the elite jerks like gates
(for mmac382) ...Big companies such HP (Hewlett Packard) are getting concerned because more than 5 out of 10 scientists/engineers that they have are not 'native' americans. And the remaining americans are above the age of 55! (journal, "Economist"). If you're referring to the apparent lesser economic standing of other nations, it's due largely to economic sabotage by capitalists from nations such as the U.S. (the thesis of books like "The Economic Hitman") - and, they breed dictators...
In the US we all were non-native americans at one time. I realize you considor competetion a bad thing. However it is competition that drives imagination. You may call it sabotage but we call it winning. Love it or leave it.
(mmac382)...(including Saddam!) who they decide to fight later on - obviously, for the monetary gains of the few (oil, military industrialists, private contractors: blackwater, halliburton, etc!). Once again, many in america even failed to discern the lies the monied ones scatter - viz., the Iraq war due to WMD; the various Wall Street lies (read 'Talbot': "86 Lies..."), etc. Tsk, tsk, tsk. But, their is hope. The younger generation is full of promise.
Listen - Its the same reactionary thinking of people like you that has put thiscomplete scum bag, OBAMA, into our white house.. If you were unable to analyze and understandthe true reasons we went into Iraq I cant help it. Although it wasnt the only reason, oil was a large part of the reason. I saw it, I knew it why are not not capable of figureing it out yourself? Like it or not Oil is a national security issue.
Republicans believe in helping one another as a result we give more to charities and time to communities than the Dems.
Dems want the goverment to make a laws to tell themjust how to live a treat one another. Its as though they cant figure out its not good to smoke in an area crowded with people, they need a law to tell them not to.
You all make this way more complicated than it needs to be. Personally because I think alot of wantto hear yourself talk. Its like this.
Repulicans believe that challanges and risk taking are a part of being free. They like to work for what they money have complete control ofhow they spend it.
Democrats believe that the govenment needs to be in chargeof their money and in addition gaurentee they get a little back to feed themselves afte the goverment uses it.
What happened to Bill Maher. He used to have so many conservative positions. I remember him specifically being critical of universal health care on larry king. Then Bush got elected and was labeled a "conservative". Bill Mayer hated bush so he now rejects all conservative positions.
That's just nonsense. Social democracy is vastly different from socialism and communism.
Why are americans so bound to universal free market principles even when in some instances those principles are clearly counter productive to the health of your society. Surely a more enlightened position is to adopt the most beneficial structure and apply it intelligently to meet the specific need it is appropriate to. Those who instilled this irrational fear you have did you a great dis-service.
Just like the rest of the western world? You yanks really need to look beyond your own borders.
But hell, do what you want. The rest of the world will laugh like hell if you lot vote this down but we don't care. Die in the gutter. Sell your house for a broken leg.
Wouldn't want to be communist like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Britain, France, Germany ... ... ... _____
@AnotheroftheRabble whoa whoa whoa. Okay, I've talked to several people from the Uk and other parts of Europe and we're not the only one ignorant of international politics.
It's easier to believe Obama's "crap" than to believe that health insurance companies really have you best interest at heart and wouldn't look for reasons to dump you as soon as you stop being profitable....and even if Bill Maher just talks to get a rise out of people, at least now we have a liberal answer for retards like Hannity, O'Reilly, and Glen Beck
lol dumb republican sheep...just hold on to your absurd ideas of freedom and socialism and don't come crying to Obama's government for health reform when your insurance company drops you the minute u land in the emergency room
Bill Moyer is a noble, morally sound man.....GOD will bless those who care for others...The world we live in is so evil and uncaring...GOD will have the final judgment for sure...
I love that Bill Maher is sitting so quietly and respectfully. He knows he's in the presence of wisdom and common sense, and he's visibly taking it to heart. Bill Moyers is SPOT ON in this interview. Such eloquence is so rare.
Typical - You prefer style over content. He is quite good at saying we want the Goverment to intrude themselves into our lives. Its so soooooothing. Jeeze roll another joint and stay sedated. We (the right) will save you eventually.
Okay- Partly because they are a bunch of sheep who will applaud every time a liberal says something, even if it's been stated a million times before or is downright foolish, partly because they disturb the actual discussion. They incorporate for me the kind of idiotic cultism that pervades all of what should have been, had every chance to be, political life in the modern world. What annoys me even more about THESE morons is that they THINK they are independent, because they swallow Maher.
This is placed kinda weird, but it popped up as a comment for me... so I'm gonna assume that it is.
- I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but I'm guessing that you don't feel that the term "cultism" applies to Maher's lot. I would argue that cultism fits any group of individuals who give up their independence of thought in order to believe in either doctrine (applies mostly to various forms of religious practice) or ego, possibly various forms of matter (applies mostly to celebrity culture).
Oh you self righteous sack of shit! I don't agree with half of what Maher says. I hate drugs I'm against weapons, 911 are 3 good examples. Bill calls his viewers the "rationalists" because largely we are rationalists.
I'm with Bill, because he is taking on the most important issue in this time, religion.
Bill Mahr just says crap to get a rise out of people. It sells. He probably dowsn't even believe half the crap he comes up with. But as long as dupes like you take him serious, the networks can sell dish soap. Your a rube for the corporate network. What joke
Yeah, okay... but how you feel about how Maher feels doesn't really reflect on the way Mahers audience behaves - when, for example, they go complete nuts whenever healthcare is mentioned: one example is when Moyers say "we're all in the same boat"... it is not original, it is not surprising - they don't need to applaud. You applaud when something in some way are REALLY good. Even Maher himself addressed this in saying "please stop applauding whenever a liberal says something."
What the hell do you know about me?What do you know about whether or not I am trying to "advance discussion of the real issues", as you so eloquently put it? How do you even know if the two of us agree what the "real issues" are?
But I dare say that no one has EVER done what you're criticizing me for not doing via text comments on youtube, so I would appreciate the right to bitch and moan when things get to stupid or to irritating to stand, even I'm "not constructive"... blah.
Marxism fundamentally redisbutes wealth from the Wealthy to the working class. This is what the final outcome of Cap and trade will be. Business will be taxed based on their output Carbon Dioxide among other things and gives it to the lower income in the form of tax credits. Never mind that its proven that CO2 does not create the green house effects. I can continue with more proof but I doubt you know what Marxism is all about. SO whats the point
In addition. This idiot Mahr is saying the Goverment should force its own people into Nationalized Health care. Just so you know Americans will not be force into anything by the Goverment. The Government works for the people not the opposite. Europe and the rest of the world can have a mother land. In the USA we have the peoples land.
Thats the falicy the Marxist want you to believe. The fact is there isn't one area of diesese that our survival rate isn't the best in the world. Our cost of living is much cheaper than Europe. Our individual free to succeed is still encouraged and much more. Europes standard of living isn't evn close.
The hypocites are those who say they weren't behind Bush. Everyone was behind Bush when it came to Iraq. Everyone wanted someone to pay for 9/11 and Saddam was as good as anybody. There was vertially no voices speaking out against it at the time. Including OBAMA.
then there was no benifit of hindsight and good judgement.. .I remembered inspectors went in and said there isn't any WMD but it was ignored.... So let's move on and look for make ups...
It's spelt 'nationalised', theres no 'z' in there. Also, his surname is 'Maher'. Please improve your spelling, then maybe I'll listen to your arguement (and rip it to shreds).
Thank you - My mistake - Its typical for a liberal to miss the forest because of the trees. Just roll another joint and stay sedated. Maher is a complete mouth piece for the Marxist. The only people that dont understand are the pathetic Elois from the lleft.
no, Americans are not Communists. Wanting to provide people with free health care does not make one a Communist or a Marxist, it simply makes one a decent and moral human being.
It makes a mediocre and very exspensive health care system. 95% of Americans have very good health insurance, So lets just work on the remaining 5% and not drive the rest of us into a crap system.
95% of Americans have very good health insurance? Is that possible when the unemployment rate in this country is floating around 10%? Even if 85-90% of the country is employed, how many of those have jobs that offer full benefits? How many of those have been subjected to wage and benefit freezes? I understand your passion and concern, but your numbers are not accurate. I do however, appreciate the fact that you feel we should focus on those who are going without. Peace
By your numbers the vast majority of Americans have health insurance. So why is OBAMA trying destroy a good system for a Gov controled system? The answer is power. You can stay outside farming for the Landlord but I want my own farm.
In the UK and ours is'nt the very best ( damn French have that lol) We spend $2,760 per person, the USA $7,290.
we have 11.9 nurses per thousand people, the USA 10.5, we have 2.5 doctors per thousand people, the USA 2.4, we also have better life expectancy and lower infant mortality rate, so look at some of the facts, not get scared by FOX News shouting socialism without any cause
I pay just under $2000.00. Thats quite an assumption that I watch Fox. Try Wall Street Journal, CNBC Squawk Box. you know venues that deal with just facts. UK is better than most euros due mostly because of their move away from socialist view over the past several years.
Is the $2000 asosiated with your Job though, and although $2,760, in practise because it's spread out over every1 and comes directly from taxes, the cost to the average Joe say earning $25,000 to $70,000, is negligible. And not particularly true about the move away from socialist view, Labour ( although they can't really call them selves that anymore, after all their privitization of education, which has lead to vast inequality of oputunity) quadrupled public spending on health since 1997
I just use Fox News as a euthimism for unregulated media, that is'nt acountable to a public independent watchdog for outright lies ( like death panels and calling us Nazis ect.)
Yeah... I don't really see that as something negative. Even though I'm not well-educated it doesn't hurt at least to attempt to elevate the level of the discourse...
OBAMAs attempt to gerimander the Congressional districts by taking over the Census has been foiled. The Census has dis associated itsel with AKORN because of its illegal activitie. Which by the way was exspose by the peoples voice FOX New! gO gLEN bECK!
The Americans that voted for OBAMA just voted for a Marxist. Those of us who didnt voted for someone who just didn't add up. Now that he is in office all the pieces have falleninto place and its clear what a complete Racist and Marxist this guy is and soon you'll see the light.
Why are we more concern with labels then content? You mean you rather be poor and miserable just because of a LABEL? As for me... call me what you want as long as I am taken care of... I don't really care. Perhaps you want to share how does a label count above the action and results.
Really? Seriously? Thats the point. This country was found by people who wanted not to be "taken careof.. Unlike our euro counter parts they wanted to left free to fned for themsleves, carry on commerce and most of all worship WITHOUT government interfereance. The result has been the strongest and most free country on the planet. Nobody makes you poor but you are free to accomplish as much as want. Thats not true in socialistic countries.
I live in Britain, we have social healthcare and we're as free a country (if not more) as the US. If i got run over by a car tomorrow then i'm safe in the knowledge that if i wake up in hospital i'm not going to be billed for having my life saved. That fact that anyone thinks that's a bad thing boggles my mind. Everyone gets free healthcare unless they have the means to pay for private healthcare. Thats how it should be.
Thats fine. However dont think for a minute your health care is free. You pay in one form or another. A private health care system allows competition for services between I*nsurance companies which reduces premiums. A goverment plan prevents competition and therefore one is stuck with what ever the Bureaucrats decided is best. In this country or any other thats not a good idea.
then why have i read from multiple news sites and non-profit sites that healthcare costs have risen 120% in the last 10 years?! in the last year it has risen 10.5%. that isnt reducing premiums, they are rising. if you dont want the health care go somewhere else. UnitedHealth pay's there CEOs BILLIONS of dollars a year. UnitedHealth gave Dr. William McGuire $1.1billion as a golden parachute! in 2005 he was making $124.8mil plus billions in options! atleast we choose or senators right?
The key phrase in the UK NHS is "free at the point of need." It is payed by national insurance which, yes, is a tax but we don't mkind. You mention keeping Bureaucrats out of health care (I am paraphrasing) but surely insurance company bureaucrats are just as bad especially with their consideration of the bottom line which is not an issue in the government option.
As it stands right now the fraud in Medicare cost Americans about 100Bill per year. The government has virtually no ability to oversee the system. Private insurance companies average about a .5% incidence of fraud because they can protect themselves. In addition the private insurance idustries average margin (a better measure of profit) isabout 4.5% Pretty modest by most standards
Thank you Britain for such a good friend to the US. No offense though are a country founded by people wanting get away from your country. Because something works in Britain doesnt mean it will work in the US. Thats what some people are missing. The US is far to diverse and large to think a blanket mandate is good for everyone.
Lets see. Ninety perccent of us have great private health insurance, The remaning either have goverment insurance or get health care by governmental mandate. How is that "not working"?
So what your saying is your couldn't improve on Canadas systemthat doesnt cover room and board. Canadiens have to buy extra insurance to cover those cost. In China they dont even feed you in the hospitals. They consider it the families responsibility. You are amazingly ill informed.
"We" the British Nation went through that, and those that were alive at the time told their children and taught them their learned behaviors. ie We went through this so this is why we do it.
I personaly am merely someone steeped in history that understands and respects what happened to us in the past to give what we have today.
"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat them".
Slavery is in the past, but the aftermath of slavery is still prevalent in urban and rural areas of America. African Americans did not lose as many lives as other cultures, but many did lose a sense of self, and confidence. Thats sort of what happens when your told your less than human for so many years. The domino effect-which can last a generations.
Yes- The liberals whom control the urban educational system, and failing, are contributing to a form of urban slavery and since the liberals dont want to correct the imigration policies (they only want to fund it) it allows the Agricutual system to exploit Mexicans.
We are not Elois like the DEMS. We will defeat the Marxist. You dont fix whats not broken. You adjust to make our system better. Dragging people alond is Marxist and contrary to our freedom.
oh, my .. thanks for giving me a lot to use on my blog.
Are there any in opposition to health care reform that can actually leave the angry hyperboly and mendacious arguments behind, and stick to real, evidence based issues?
You are same love it or leave it nimrods that I encountered back in the 1970s.
and of course they want us to be like Europe! GO to Europe then and talk about how great they are. Progressives would take the first amendment out of the constitiution and tell us how to run our lives.
thanks, been there - and used their excellent medical care. Why do you not want your country to have something as good? what have you got against Americans?
Okay so you guys know more about the health care issue then i do? Freaking liberals. The fact that the democrats control everything scares the shit outta me because they think were all retarded and we need to be told what we want and need. Im tired of these guys and the republicans 2. Obama is not a saint hes just the president. No worse then Bush or any other.
You even re-elected that treasonous administration despite all the evidence that they manipulated us into an unnecessary war, we were going broke paying for that war, and he was making us into a third world country.
So suck it up, it is going to be 8 long years for you.
The problem is that the Democrats lost their balls somewhere along the way, as always. That's why I'm not a Democrat, and why I remain a registered Independent. I really, really hope that they will get their heads out of their ass, including President Obama, and that they will finally stand up to the thugs on the Right. That's what needs to happen.
The last "good war" that was not one of aggression and had a clear victory was WWII but that required most of the load being handled by the USSR which primarily beat the Axis Powers, and lost 25,000,000 citizens in doing it.
Of the over 300 US wars and police actions, and occupying 173 countries in the last 100 years, which were "right" and clearly "won"?
It will take the fall of America for history to uncover the profiteering criminals that control this country. Old balding white business men control this country.

Far too many people have lived under the assumption that their healthcare was good - until they found it wasn't.
swingdwarf 2 years ago
Sorry to break the news to you but you are already paying for the uninsured through your healthcare. The only question is whether your money is being spent efficiently or not. Its not. This isn't to say I support Obama's bill. Without a public option it doesn't do much to stop the price gouging by insurance companies. Of course don't take my word on this, look it up.

Hellooo20 2 years ago
interesting point.

@satyricon451 Yes, it is not a matter of politics it is a matter of morality.

Thats not a Dem/Rep issue its just a Big Goverment issue. Moyers is old and stupid.
mmac382 2 years ago
On Bill's "parallels...between great empires..." (7:16). That also rings true: the capitalists are keeping the ordinary americans busy with a lot of "circus" (...) to keep them from actually digging into the real natures of the critical issues hounding the nation. The whole thing is dissipating the energy of the whole nation, too distracted and rendering them fickle-minded. tsk, tsk, tsk...
Mannheim67 2 years ago
I come from another part of the globe. It's quite easy to see that the republicans who're sowing the seeds of confusion & distaste for the healthcare proposal are better at lying. So successful in that craft that they dragged a crowd to washington. Also, there's truth in Bill's comment: "people don't understand enough about this issue to be able to render an opinion." But, that's typical American attitude: so opinionated yet so uninformed (or, ignorant?). The smart ones should make noise. :)
Mannheim67 2 years ago
Ive been to other parts of the globe and Ive seen how lazy, unimaginative and dependant idiots like you have become.
mmac382 2 years ago
Lazy, unimaginative and dependEnt...? he he he. You seem to have missed the 'current events' for more than a decade. If the americans of the current generation haven't been so lazy, unimaginative and dependent, how would you account for the deluge of talents and professionals coming in from other countries? (And, Bill Gates, appearing in a Senate hearing last year, asked to increase the available work visas!)
Mannheim67 2 years ago
We attract those proffesionals because their countries inhibit their ability to perform. You seem to forget that the US is social result of a mixture of the world. It is by nature a "melting pot" and as a result cannot function like a realitive homogenous society like the EU and elsewhere.
mmac382 2 years ago
The EU is not a homogeneous society. It is by definition a union of varied countries with different cultural histories and indeed many different languages.
carpal24 2 years ago
Do you have whole sectors of society that have grown large enough to politically control large regions of your country. (aside from the Muslim community of course) I doubt the EU has immigrated communities with such power.
mmac382 2 years ago
Here in the UK there are no groups which are big enough to control a "large region of the country" That includes the Muslim community, which at the last census is only 4% of the population and is pretty much ignored by politicians apart from grabbing headlines. If you mean the EU then A, the EU is not a country and B, it is can't be homogeneous since it so culturally separated. Again, there is no homogeneity in the 27 nation states that make up the EU
carpal24 2 years ago
Im talking in realitive terms. In comparison to the US the UK could be considered Homogenous. Like the UK, America many ethnic cultures however very few can be ignored. Southern California has such a large Population of Mexicans it could in theory ceceed back into Mexico. I know the EU isnot a country. France however has a very large Muslim Pop and they actually have comparable strength.
mmac382 2 years ago
The French Muslim pop is only 10% and since they are mainly poor immigrants then I very much doubt their political clout. It has been inflated only by a global media who like sticking pictures of "angry muslims" on their front page for ratings and politicians who use it to score cheap political points with their base. I very much doubt they have the political power of Mexicans in CA where they are almost 40% of the population.

ladybird1953 2 years ago
Okay- Partly because they are a bunch of sheep who will applaud every time a liberal says something, even if it's been stated a million times before or is downright foolish, partly because they disturb the actual discussion. They incorporate for me the kind of idiotic cultism that pervades all of what should have been, had every chance to be, political life in the modern world. What annoys me even more about THESE morons is that they THINK they are independent, because they swallow Maher.
Nostatementinthename 2 years ago
Cult...your really reaching here.
AlphaHorizon 2 years ago
This is placed kinda weird, but it popped up as a comment for me... so I'm gonna assume that it is.
- I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but I'm guessing that you don't feel that the term "cultism" applies to Maher's lot. I would argue that cultism fits any group of individuals who give up their independence of thought in order to believe in either doctrine (applies mostly to various forms of religious practice) or ego, possibly various forms of matter (applies mostly to celebrity culture).
Nostatementinthename 2 years ago
Oh you self righteous sack of shit! I don't agree with half of what Maher says. I hate drugs I'm against weapons, 911 are 3 good examples. Bill calls his viewers the "rationalists" because largely we are rationalists.

mmac382 2 years ago
Give me one good reason I should question Bill Maher's intent. I just think your another pissed off Christian.
AlphaHorizon 2 years ago
Yeah, okay... but how you feel about how Maher feels doesn't really reflect on the way Mahers audience behaves - when, for example, they go complete nuts whenever healthcare is mentioned: one example is when Moyers say "we're all in the same boat"... it is not original, it is not surprising - they don't need to applaud. You applaud when something in some way are REALLY good. Even Maher himself addressed this in saying "please stop applauding whenever a liberal says something."
Nostatementinthename 2 years ago
And also,
What the hell do you know about me?What do you know about whether or not I am trying to "advance discussion of the real issues", as you so eloquently put it?

SO whats the point
mmac382 2 years ago
In addition. This idiot Mahr is saying the Goverment should force its own people into Nationalized Health care. Just so you know Americans will not be force into anything by the Goverment.

The result has been the strongest and most free country on the planet. Nobody makes you poor but you are free to accomplish as much as want. Thats not true in socialistic countries.
mmac382 2 years ago
I live in Britain, we have social healthcare and we're as free a country (if not more) as the US. If i got run over by a car tomorrow then i'm safe in the knowledge that if i wake up in hospital i'm not going to be billed for having my life saved. That fact that anyone thinks that's a bad thing boggles my mind. Everyone gets free healthcare unless they have the means to pay for private healthcare. Thats how it should be.
therippingcones 2 years ago 2
Thats fine. However dont think for a minute your health care is free. You pay in one form or another. A private health care system allows competition for services between I*nsurance companies which reduces premiums. A goverment plan prevents competition and therefore one is stuck with what ever the Bureaucrats decided is best. In this country or any other thats not a good idea.
mmac382 2 years ago
please stop talking
TheKevturner 2 years ago
then why have i read from multiple news sites and non-profit sites that healthcare costs have risen 120% in the last 10 years?! in the last year it has risen 10.5%. that isnt reducing premiums, they are rising. if you dont want the health care go somewhere else. UnitedHealth pay's there CEOs BILLIONS of dollars a year. UnitedHealth gave Dr. William McGuire $1.1billion as a golden parachute! in 2005 he was making $124.8mil plus billions in options! atleast we choose or senators right?
clayfromsanantonio 2 years ago
The key phrase in the UK NHS is "free at the point of need." It is payed by national insurance which, yes, is a tax but we don't mkind. You mention keeping Bureaucrats out of health care (I am paraphrasing) but surely insurance company bureaucrats are just as bad especially with their consideration of the bottom line which is not an issue in the government option.
carpal24 2 years ago
As it stands right now the fraud in Medicare cost Americans about 100Bill per year. The government has virtually no ability to oversee the system. Private insurance companies average about a .5% incidence of fraud because they can protect themselves. In addition the private insurance idustries average margin (a better measure of profit) isabout 4.5% Pretty modest by most standards

Lets see. Ninety perccent of us have great private health insurance, The remaning either have goverment insurance or get health care by governmental mandate. How is that "not working"?
mmac382 2 years ago
There wouldn't be a reform for health care if everyone had it.

So what your saying is your couldn't improve on Canadas systemthat doesnt cover room and board. Canadiens have to buy extra insurance to cover those cost. In China they dont even feed you in the hospitals. They consider it the families responsibility. You are amazingly ill informed.

90% of us have great private health insurance? What is today opposite day?
Tomothyry is right. Nuff said.

You are "ill informed" to say that we have great private insurance.

Fair point, it only worked in Britain because we had gone through the blitz, equivalent to 9/11 every night for 8 months.
Good thing that the US has never had to go through that, but bad that it lacks the unity that a nation has after the event...

how old are you? what is this 'we' dont group yourself in with society 60+ yrs ago. you went though nothing.
Waltank 2 years ago
By "we" I mean the nation as a whole.
I hope I never do go through anything either...

How old are you? That statement is like the Blacks in America saying they lived through slavery. Its stupid.
mmac382 2 years ago

Why do you not want your country to have something as good? what have you got against Americans?
ladybird1953 2 years ago
Okay so you guys know more about the health care issue then i do? Freaking liberals. The fact that the democrats control everything scares the shit outta me because they think were all retarded and we need to be told what we want and need. Im tired of these guys and the republicans 2. Obama is not a saint hes just the president. No worse then Bush or any other.
gamerzieg3211 2 years ago
We weren't sure you were retarded until you posted this hysterical rant. Now we are.
Can you get a clue that it's not about Obama?
ladybird1953 2 years ago
Gee, too bad. Now you know how we felt.

7:16 on is so very true. If insatiable greed is allowed to continue directing policy in America the country will inevitably be doomed.

kumbaya... listen to what this guys says at 5:15... "the united states is not good at that sort of thing".. talking about war?
in what world?
ELOQUENCIA 2 years ago
In what world has the US been good at wars?
The last "good war" that was not one of aggression and had a clear victory was WWII but that required most of the load being handled by the USSR which primarily beat the Axis Powers, and lost 25,000,000 citizens in doing it.
Of the over 300 US wars and police actions, and occupying 173 countries in the last 100 years, which were "right" and clearly "won"?
