The kindest and most humane way to get it unstuck is DEAD PUSHING IT WITH THE ENGINE TURNED OFF OR OUT OF GEAR.That way no distress or damage is inflicted and is like pushing a pram out of snow.
second gear. diesels are better in the snow as they have low revs only got stuck once that was due to poxy ice outside house. apart from that it was fine. got me up hills in the snow (2wd 306 2.0 TD estate) hill up by me, woman in nissan wheel spinning the fuck out of her car. I got up the hill using second gear, and third, when started spinning good clutch control and turn wheel left to right (side of tyres) it was fun driving to weymouth :D
