I think the reason why Zang's earlier works are more captivating than his later ones can be explained in one word - The wealth and fame have corrupted his talent and artistic originality.
What strikes me in the scenes taken from To Live are their their fundamental comfortableness - even sleeping in the streets appears picturesque, and no more trouble than an economy seat on a transpacific flight - and the constant use of calender scenery and the crushing sentimental soundtrack - to chronicle a life lived through the Cultural Revolution?? I'm afraid Zhang has been shilling for the Party since he began....
I think when one is younger you tend to be more idealistic. As one gets older you might want to have some fun now that you made your "statement" , a pattern of many directors. Zhang has certainly made some very good films both in style and content. From the late 1980's to early 2000's the Chinese government wasn't censoring as heavily as it is now "to protect the image of the Chinese people". Raise The Red Latern probably couldn't have been made today.
Zhang Yimou: was of the best director ever !!! Personally I prefer his 90s movies than the new ones (I mean the martial ones, though they still great)
